All Avanti West Coast services have been cancelled from the station. Six London Tube lines are simultaneously disrupted. And airport access to Heathrow, Stansted, and Gatwick is affected. London Euston is the southern anchor of the West Coast Main Line — one of the busiest mixed-use railways in all of Europe, connecting London with Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow, Edinburgh, and dozens of cities in between. The timing of this closure during the Easter break, one of the UK’s peak travel periods, means that over 1.5 million journeys could be affected over the six-day window.
Starting from Good Friday April 3, until Wednesday April 8, 2026, the station will undergo an intensive £400 million engineering blitz led by Network Rail, part of a “high-output” strategy designed to complete months of maintenance in a single concentrated window.
The works include £8.4 million of essential track work at Willesden, signalling upgrades worth over £7 million just south of Leighton Buzzard, overhead line equipment replacement in Wembley, bridge waterproofing at Ledburn, and canopy and platform upgrades at Harrow & Wealdstone station — all part of a wider £400 million project to increase the reliability of the West Coast Main Line.
Network Rail’s Regional Director James Kelly confirmed: “We are modernising ageing infrastructure to make journeys more reliable for the millions of passengers who rely on the West Coast Main Line. Closing the station for six days allows us to do this safely and efficiently.”
For passengers, none of that context changes the immediate problem. Euston is shut. Avanti West Coast trains are cancelled. And over 100,000 people who would normally pass through this station today need a different plan.

A standard 90-minute trip to Birmingham could take over 3 hours when accounting for the bus transfer between Milton Keynes and London hubs.

Trains from Manchester will terminate at Milton Keynes Central. Passengers can use the replacement bus service between Milton Keynes Central and Bedford, then catch East Midlands Railway and Thameslink trains into London St Pancras International at no extra cost.
Your options:
Amended Avanti West Coast services will operate between Milton Keynes Central and Liverpool Lime Street via Nuneaton, calling additionally at Rugby. Passengers coming from or heading to central London must use the Milton Keynes–Bedford bus replacement then St Pancras for the London leg.
Best option: National Express coach from London Victoria to Liverpool Lime Street. Journey approximately 4 hours. Book tonight if you have not already.
Direct links to Glasgow Central and Edinburgh Waverley are suspended from Euston. Passengers are diverted via the East Coast Main Line — LNER from King’s Cross — or using buses to connect to Milton Keynes.
Services between Scotland and London will terminate at Milton Keynes Central. Buses will run between Milton Keynes Central and Bedford/Potters Bar where you can catch a train to an alternative central London station.
On Saturday April 4 and Sunday April 5: additional pain. Compounding the London closure, no trains will run between Preston and Lancaster on Saturday and Sunday, further complicating journeys for those heading to the Lake District or Scotland.
Best option for Scotland: LNER from London King’s Cross. This is the single most reliable alternative for the entire closure period. Book your reservation now — capacity is finite and filling fast.
Services between London Euston and Holyhead will operate between Crewe and Holyhead only. Passengers must use bus replacement from Milton Keynes to join at Crewe or an alternative route.
Best option: Aviva coach services or travel via Birmingham New Street using Chiltern Railways, then onwards.
Transport for London has confirmed that the majority of its network will be open across the Easter weekend. However, a number of lines are subject to engineering works. Here is the complete picture:
The Hammersmith & City line will be fully closed from Friday April 3 to Monday April 6 for track and signalling upgrades. Use the District line (where not closed), the Circle line, or local buses.
The District line will be partially closed between Upminster and Whitechapel, and between Earl’s Court and Kensington Olympia across all four days of Easter weekend. The Elizabeth line is the primary alternative for the eastern section.
The Bakerloo line will have no service between Stonebridge Park and Harrow & Wealdstone on Friday April 3 and Monday April 6. On Saturday April 4 and Sunday April 5, the closure extends to Queen’s Park.Use the Metropolitan or Jubilee lines as alternatives for the northern section.
There will be no services between London Euston and Watford Junction on Saturday April 4 and Sunday April 5. On Friday April 3 and Easter Monday April 6, the line operates only between Euston and Willesden Junction.
A major part-closure on the DLR will run from Friday April 3 until Wednesday April 8, affecting all routes between West India Quay, Poplar, Bank, and Tower Gateway. Use the Jubilee or Central lines as alternatives for Bank/Canary Wharf connections.
The Waterloo & City line will be closed from Friday April 3 to Monday April 6. Use the Jubilee line to Waterloo, or the Northern line.
The Elizabeth line is the primary rail link and remains largely operational. On Easter Sunday April 5, the Elizabeth line will be closed between Paddington and Ealing Broadway until 07:45. Trains beginning after that time will not call at Acton Main Line, Hanwell, or West Ealing.
Impact: Early morning Easter Sunday departures from Heathrow should allow extra time. The Heathrow Express from Paddington is unaffected by this closure. The Piccadilly line direct to Heathrow operates as normal.
What to do: If you have a very early Easter Sunday flight, consider arriving the night before or using the Piccadilly line as your primary airport link this weekend.
Stansted Express travelers who usually connect via Stratford and Tottenham Hale lose that connecting rail option until after 6:00 PM on Sunday April 5, pushing them back toward Liverpool Street.
Impact: Sunday travel to Stansted is the highest-risk day. Allow extra time. Liverpool Street to Stansted Express remains operational as the primary route. The Stratford connection is unavailable until the evening.
CrossCountry note: CrossCountry passengers face buses between Ely and Stansted Airport from Friday April 3 through Monday April 6, and Greater Anglia’s Norwich direction is cut back to Cambridge with bus replacement onwards.
A reduced service will run between London Waterloo and Clapham Junction from Friday April 3 to Monday April 6, with no trains to/from Queenstown Road Battersea. The Gatwick Express and Southern services from Victoria are unaffected.
What to do: Use Victoria station and the Gatwick Express or Southern services. Avoid the Waterloo route this weekend.
Manchester Airport itself keeps mainly normal service. However, TransPennine Express will terminate certain airport trains short at Preston, Stalybridge, York, or Carlisle depending on the day, making long-distance northern connections to the airport less direct and less forgiving.
National Rail has confirmed that your ticket will be accepted at no extra cost on East Midlands Railway and Thameslink trains between Bedford and London St Pancras International.This is the key passenger protection measure for the closure — if you hold an Avanti West Coast or London Northwestern Railway ticket for any journey via Euston, you can use the replacement bus to Bedford and then travel via St Pancras on EMR/Thameslink at no additional charge.

Step 1 — Check your specific journey on National Rail. Go to nationalrail.co.uk and enter your exact travel date and stations. The timetable changes daily — Good Friday is different from Saturday, Sunday is different from Easter Monday.
Step 2 — Rebook on LNER if you are travelling to Scotland. LNER from King’s Cross is the cleanest alternative for Glasgow and Edinburgh passengers. Seats are filling fast. Rebook now using your original ticket entitlement if you can.
Step 3 — Use Chiltern Railways for Birmingham. London Marylebone to Birmingham Moor Street takes approximately 2 hours and is completely unaffected by the Euston closure. Check Chiltern’s own website for seat availability.
Step 4 — Allow 90 minutes extra journey time for all rerouted trips. Every alternative involves more changes, busier trains, and less margin for error. Whether you are connecting through Milton Keynes, going via King’s Cross, or using a coach, build in substantially more time than your normal journey.
Step 5 — Check your Tube route before you leave. The six Tube line closures are happening simultaneously. Use the TfL Journey Planner at tfl.gov.uk/plan-a-journey to check your specific route — do not assume your normal Tube path is working this weekend.
Step 6 — If you are flying — build in at least 3 extra hours airport access time. The combination of mainline rail closures, Tube engineering, and Easter road traffic means airport journeys will take significantly longer than normal. If your flight is before 10AM on Easter Sunday, plan your airport transport the night before.
