Breaking: The United States just FROZE immigrant visa (green card) processing for 75 countries effective TODAY, January 21, 2026βthe BIGGEST expansion of Trump’s travel ban yet. Brazil, Nigeria, Colombia, Haiti, Thailand, Russia, Egypt, Guatemala, and 67 others are now BLOCKED from receiving green cards indefinitely while the State Department “reassesses” public charge policies. Tourist visas still work BUT families waiting years for green cards are now stuck in limbo. Combined with previous bans, a record 113 NATIONS now face full or partial US visa restrictions. Here’s everything you need to know if you’re affected.
Published: January 21, 2026 (EFFECTIVE TODAY at 12:01 AM) Countries Affected: 75 nations (67 NEW + 8 already on travel ban lists) Total Countries Under US Visa Restrictions: 113 (including June & December 2025 bans) Visa Type: IMMIGRANT visas ONLY (green cards for family, employment, diversity lottery) Tourist Visas: NOT affected (B-1/B-2 still being processed!) Student/Work Visas: NOT affected (F-1, H-1B, J-1 still being processed!) Duration: INDEFINITE (“pause” with no end date) Reason Cited: “Public charge” (preventing welfare dependency) People Affected: Millions in green card queues (spouses, children, workers) Exemptions: Dual nationals with passport from non-banned country
At exactly 12:01 AM Eastern Time on January 21, 2026, the State Department STOPPED issuing immigrant visas (green cards) to nationals of 75 countries.
This affects:
β Family reunification: US citizens waiting for foreign spouses/children β Employment-based green cards: Workers recruited by US employers β Diversity visa lottery winners: From affected countries β Refugees: (Already mostly banned under prior orders)
This does NOT affect:
β Tourist visas (B-1/B-2): Still being processed normally β Student visas (F-1): Still being processed β Work visas (H-1B, L-1): Still being processed β Exchange visitors (J-1): Still being processed β Green card applicants INSIDE the US: I-485 adjustment of status continues
State Department official statement:
“President Trump has made clear that immigrants must be financially self-sufficient and not be a financial burden to Americans. The Department of State is undergoing a full review of all policies, regulations, and guidance to ensure that immigrants from these high-risk countries do not utilize welfare in the United States or become a public charge.”
Translation: If you’re from one of these 75 countries and waiting for a green card abroad, you’re STUCK. Interviews can happen, applications accepted, but NO visas will be issued until this “pause” endsβwhich could be MONTHS or YEARS.
Here are ALL 75 countries where green card processing stopped at midnight:
Africa (30 countries):
Algeria, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Cote d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast), Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Libya, Morocco, Nigeria, Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda
Americas (15 countries):
Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Dominica, Grenada, Guatemala, Haiti, Jamaica, Nicaragua, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Uruguay
Asia & Middle East (24 countries):
Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Kyrgyz Republic, Laos, Lebanon, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Russia, Syria, Thailand, Uzbekistan, Yemen
Europe & Caucasus (6 countries):
Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Kosovo, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia
Pacific (1 country):
Fiji
Many of these were ALREADY on Trump’s June or December 2025 travel ban lists (full or partial bans). But 67 are NEW additions.
Trump’s visa restrictions have grown EXPONENTIALLY since he returned to office:
Targeted primarily Muslim-majority nations and countries with terrorism concerns.
Added 19 MORE countries, focusing on refusal to accept deported criminals.
Today’s announcement adds 67 NEW countries to the restricted list, bringing the total to a RECORD 113 nations facing full or partial US visa restrictions.
Historical context:
Translation: Nearly HALF of all countries on Earth now face some form of US visa restriction. This is unprecedented in modern US history.
The State Department justifies this freeze with ONE phrase: “public charge.”
Legal definition: A foreign national who is “primarily dependent on the government for subsistence” through:
Historical use: Public charge has existed in US immigration law since 1882. Consular officers have ALWAYS had authority to deny visas if applicants seemed likely to need welfare.
Critics say the data doesn’t support the ban:
FACT: Most immigrants who aren’t US citizens are INELIGIBLE for federal benefits. FACT: Green card holders are ineligible for welfare for FIVE YEARS after arrival. FACT: Immigrant households use public benefits at LOWER rates than native-born households.
Economic Policy Institute analysis:
“The stated reasons for the January 2026 travel ban are dubious. Most immigrants who are not U.S. citizens are ineligible for federal public benefits, and green card holders are ineligible for five years. The likely result of the public charge-related travel ban will be that many foreign-born persons in the United States will not apply for benefits they are entitled to because they’ll fear negative consequences on future applications for immigration status, including many immigrant parents who may forego public benefits for their U.S. citizen children.”
Translation: The “public charge” justification is a PRETEXT. The real goal is dramatically reducing legal immigration from developing countries.
Why Somalia specifically targeted?
Fox News broke the story January 14, 2026, highlighting the “Feeding Our Future” fraud scandal in Minnesota:
State Department response: Somalia added to ban list citing “heightened scrutiny” after fraud scandal.
Critics respond: Punishing an ENTIRE nationality for actions of a few criminals is textbook discrimination. Would the US ban visas from Italy if Italian-Americans committed fraud?
Translation: The administration cherry-picks anecdotes to justify blanket bans on millions.
If you’re from an affected country and waiting for a green card:
β Submit visa applications (forms still accepted) β Attend scheduled interviews (consulates still scheduling) β Pay fees (government keeps your money) β Provide documents (everything proceeds normally)
β Receive a visa (interviews end with “administrative processing indefinitely”) β Enter the US as immigrant (even if you HAD a visa approved before ban!) β Get refunds (fees are NON-REFUNDABLE) β Get timeline (State Department says “indefinite pause”)
What actually happens at the interview:
Translation: The government is conducting FAKE interviews. They know they won’t issue visas, but they’re going through the motions anyway.
Maria Santos, US citizen in Florida:
Brazilian husband waiting 2+ years for green card. Interview scheduled February 15, 2026. Now STUCK indefinitely.
“I’m an American taxpayer. I followed every rule. I paid $2,000+ in fees. And now they’re telling me I can’t bring my husband home? This is INSANE.”
The numbers:
Translation: American families are being held hostage by immigration policy.
Tech companies, hospitals, universities recruit foreign talent with job offers, then sponsor green cards.
Example: Nigerian software engineer recruited by Google in 2023:
Company response: “We need this talent NOW. If we can’t get green cards, we’ll hire in Canada instead.”
Translation: US companies lose talented workers to competitor nations.
The Diversity Visa (DV) Lottery gives 50,000 green cards annually to countries with low US immigration rates.
2026 DV Lottery stats:
Those 15,000 winners? SCREWED.
They “won” green cards but now can’t claim them. Visas expire September 30, 2026. If the freeze lasts past September, they LOSE their green cards permanently.
Translation: Winning the lottery means nothing if you can’t collect your prize.
IMPORTANT EXCEPTION:
If you’re ALREADY in the US and filing Form I-485 (adjustment of status), this freeze does NOT apply to you.
Example: Brazilian student on F-1 visa marries US citizen:
Translation: If you’re already in America, you’re protected. If you’re abroad, you’re stuck.
State Department FAQs confirm:
“Dual nationals applying with a valid passport of a country that is not listed above are exempt from this pause.”
Example:
BUT there’s a catch:
You must have a VALID passport from a non-banned country. If your second passport is expired or you’ve never claimed dual citizenship, you’re OUT OF LUCK.
Translation: Rich people with dual passports escape the ban. Poor people with single nationality get screwed.
Many of today’s 75 countries were ALREADY on full or partial travel ban lists:
Full Travel Ban (No Visas Issued at All):
Partial Travel Ban (Some Visa Categories Blocked):
So what’s NEW about today’s freeze?
For those countries, immigrant visas were ALREADY nearly impossible. Today’s announcement is mostly symbolicβmaking official what was already happening.
For the 67 NEW countries (Brazil, Colombia, Thailand, etc.): This is a DRASTIC change. Green cards were flowing normally until midnight last night.
Translation: Some countries got hit TWICE (prior ban + today). Others got hit for first time.
State Department says: “Indefinite pause while we reassess policies.”
What that REALLY means:
Trump’s first travel ban (January 2017):
Biden COVID travel bans:
Translation: Government “temporary pauses” become PERMANENT unless courts intervene.
ACLU, immigrant rights groups will sue within DAYS. Expect:
Timeline for court resolution: 6-18 MONTHS minimum (appeals to Supreme Court possible)
Translation: Even if courts BLOCK this ban, relief won’t come until late 2026 at earliest.
Countries don’t sit quietly when the US bans their nationals.
December 2025 counter-bans:
Translation: When the US bans African countries, African countries ban Americans BACK.
Brazil is the BIGGEST surprise on today’s list. As of January 21, 2026, no official Brazilian government response yet.
But expect:
Brazil-US relationship:
Translation: Banning Brazil risks one of America’s most important relationships.
Colombia, Guatemala, Haiti are major sources of:
Business leaders warning:
“If we can’t bring in workers legally, labor shortages will CRIPPLE industries.”
Translation: Businesses dependent on immigrant labor are about to suffer.
CRITICAL: This ban affects IMMIGRANT visas (green cards). Tourist/business travel is SEPARATE.
If you’re from Brazil, Colombia, Nigeria, etc. and want to visit the US for vacation or business:
BUT expect:
Translation: Tourist visas technically unaffected, but PRACTICALLY harder to get.
Foreign students from banned countries can STILL get F-1 visas for US universities.
BUT expect:
Translation: F-1 visas still available but approval is getting HARDER.
Tech workers, intracompany transferees from banned countries can STILL get work visas.
BUT expect:
Translation: Work visas still available but EXPECT MORE HOOPS.
Immigration attorney Sarah Chen (California):
“This is the broadest immigration restriction in modern US history. 75 countries, indefinite duration, no clear path forward. Families are devastated. This will be tied up in courts for YEARS.”
Economic Policy Institute (think tank):
“The stated reasons for the January 2026 travel ban are dubious. Most immigrants who are not U.S. citizens are ineligible for federal public benefits, and green card holders are ineligible for five years.”
Fox News (conservative outlet that broke the story):
“Immigration from these 75 countries will be paused while the State Department reassess immigration processing procedures to prevent the entry of foreign nationals who would take welfare and public benefits.”
NPR (liberal outlet):
“The step builds on earlier immigration and travel bans by the administration on nearly 40 countries and is part of President Trump’s ongoing efforts to tighten U.S. entry standards for foreigners.”
Yale University Office of International Students:
“This policy change affects only individuals applying for immigrant visas β those that lead to lawful permanent residence (i.e., green cards) β at U.S. embassies and consulates abroad.”
Translation: Conservatives praise it as necessary security. Liberals condemn it as discriminatory. Lawyers say it’s legally dubious.
The United States froze immigrant visa (green card) processing for 75 countries effective TODAY, January 21, 2026βthe BIGGEST expansion of Trump’s travel ban yet.
What we know:
β 75 countries affected: Brazil, Nigeria, Colombia, Haiti, Russia, Egypt, Thailand, Guatemala, and 67 others β Immigrant visas ONLY: Green cards frozen; tourist/student/work visas still processing (for now!) β Indefinite duration: No end dateβcould last MONTHS or YEARS β Public charge justification: Preventing welfare dependency (critics say data doesn’t support this) β Combined with prior bans: 113 TOTAL countries now face full or partial US visa restrictions β Interviews continue: Consulates still scheduling appointments but NO visas issued β Dual nationals exempt: If you have passport from non-banned country, you’re safe β Adjustment of status inside US: NOT affected (I-485 processing continues)
What we DON’T know:
β How long this “pause” will last β What “reassessment” actually entails β Whether courts will block it β If tourist visas will be next β How countries will retaliate β When (if ever) green cards resume
Who gets hurt:
π 500,000+ US citizens waiting for foreign spouses/children π Workers recruited by US employers (stuck abroad indefinitely) π 15,000+ diversity lottery winners (green cards expire September 30, 2026!) π Families separated for years (no timeline for reunion)
Who benefits:
β Dual nationals with passports from non-banned countries β People already in the US filing adjustment of status (I-485) β Immigration lawyers (business is BOOMING!)
Historical reality check:
If you’re from one of these 75 countries and waiting for a green card: You’re stuck. Interviews can happen, fees paid, but NO visas will be issued until this “pause” ends.
Legal challenges are coming. Courts may overturn this. But relief won’t come until late 2026 at EARLIEST.
The US just closed its doors to immigrant visas from 75 countriesβaffecting MILLIONS of people worldwide.
