URGENT — May 25, 2026 — Memorial Day: KLM Royal Dutch Airlines’ weather waiver for New York City area airports closes tonight at midnight. If your original KLM flight was scheduled between Wednesday May 20 and Friday May 22, 2026, travelling to, from, or via Newark Liberty (EWR), John F. Kennedy (JFK), LaGuardia (LGA), or White Plains Westchester (HPN) — and you have not yet rebooked — you have hours left to do so for free. After midnight tonight, any change to your ticket will be subject to KLM’s standard change fees and fare differences. On transatlantic routes, those fare differences can reach €200–€400 per passenger in economy and significantly more in business class. KLM is not going to remind you. No automated message is going out tonight. The only passengers who will keep their free rebooking right are the ones who act before this article’s countdown runs out. Here is every confirmed term of the waiver, every step to claim it, every alternative if rebooking today is not possible, and the Delta parallel waiver that covers the same airports with the same midnight deadline.
Published: May 25, 2026 — Monday (Memorial Day — US Federal Holiday) Waiver airline: KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (KL) — operated by Air France KLM Group Waiver type: New York City weather disruption waiver DEADLINE: TODAY — Monday, May 25, 2026 — midnight Ticket eligibility: Originally issued on or before Thursday, May 21, 2026 Original flight eligibility: Must depart May 20, 21, or 22, 2026 — to, from, or via:
If you are reading this on the morning of May 25 in the United States:
| Time Zone | Deadline |
|---|---|
| Eastern Time (ET) | Tonight — midnight ET |
| Central Time (CT) | Tonight — midnight CT (same deadline in local terms) |
| Mountain Time (MT) | Tonight — midnight MT |
| Pacific Time (PT) | Tonight — midnight PT |
| UK (BST) | Tonight at 1:00 AM BST (Tuesday May 26) |
| Netherlands/Amsterdam (CEST) | Tonight at 2:00 AM CEST (Tuesday May 26) |
| Australia (AEST) | Tomorrow morning — but act NOW as KLM may close the system earlier |
There is no grace period. KLM’s waiver terms state clearly: “Your new departure date should be on or before Monday 25 May 2026. You can rebook your flight at the latest on Monday 25 May 2026.” After midnight, the waiver window closes in KLM’s reservation system and the standard change fee structure applies automatically.
Rule 1 — Your original flight: Your flight must have been scheduled to depart between Wednesday, May 20, 2026 and Friday, May 22, 2026 — travelling to, from, or via EWR, JFK, LGA, or HPN.
Rule 2 — Your ticket: Your ticket must have been originally issued on or before Thursday, May 21, 2026. Tickets purchased on or after May 22 are not covered.
Rule 3 — Your rebooking deadline: To rebook with no fare difference, your new flight must depart on or before today, Monday May 25, 2026. If you rebook for a date after May 25, a fare difference may apply — the free window is closing tonight.
Rule 4 — Cabin class: The fare difference waiver applies only when the same cabin class (economy, premium economy, business) is available on your rebooked flight. If the same cabin class is sold out, a fare difference may apply.
Rule 5 — No itinerary required: You can rebook to any available KLM route — you are not restricted to your original city pair on the same date. You can move to a completely different travel date within the waiver window.
The cleanest option. Rebook your May 20–22 New York flight to any available KLM departure today, May 25 — with no change fee and no fare difference if the same cabin class is available.
This option closes tonight. It is the most valuable option and the most time-sensitive.
If you cannot rebook to a same-day departure but still want to change your ticket, you can do so after midnight tonight — but KLM’s standard change fees and fare differences apply. For economy tickets, fare differences can range from €50 to €400+ depending on availability and route. For business class, differences can be much larger.
If you can only rebook after today: Contact KLM before midnight tonight and at minimum log your rebooking intent in the system — some airlines record a waiver flag against a booking that preserves certain flexibility even after the waiver window closes. Ask a KLM agent specifically: “Can you note my waiver intent before the deadline?” while you arrange your new dates.
If KLM cancelled your flight, or if your flight was delayed for at least three hours for flights in Europe or at least five hours for intercontinental flights, you can request a full refund of the ticket and extra options.
A full refund means:
To request a full cash refund: klm.com → Manage Booking → Cancel Flight → Request Refund. State explicitly that you want a cash refund, not a voucher.
If you cannot rebook today and do not want to pay fare differences, KLM offers a travel voucher valid for 12 months from the date of issue. The voucher can be used for all KLM, Air France, Delta, and Virgin Atlantic flights offered on the Air France KLM website. It can also be used to buy extra options like upgrades, specific seats, and baggage on KLM and Air France flights.
This is the right option for passengers who know they want to travel New York–Amsterdam (or another KLM transatlantic route) again in the next 12 months but cannot commit to a specific date today.
Open your KLM booking confirmation email. Look at:
If all three match — you qualify. Continue to Step 2.

Log in with your booking reference number and last name. The waiver will appear as an active option on your booking.
Select: “Change Flight” → the waiver screen will show available rebooking options with no fee applied.
Choose any available KLM flight departing today, May 25. If you want to travel on a different date (after today), note that fare differences may apply — but you can still action the booking change now and the date can sometimes be negotiated.
If the same cabin class is not available on today’s KLM departures: call KLM directly (numbers below) — a phone agent may be able to access inventory not visible in the online system, or confirm the voucher/refund path.
Review the new itinerary. Confirm that the fare difference field shows £0 / €0 / $0. If a fare difference appears, stop — call KLM before accepting the charge.
Screenshot the confirmation screen showing:
Store this with your travel documents. If any future billing or system discrepancy appears, this is your evidence that the waiver was correctly applied.

KLM is not alone. Delta Air Lines has issued an identical waiver for the same New York weather event, covering the same four airports on the same dates. Delta’s waiver covers affected cities to, from, or through EWR, JFK, LGA, and HPN — impacted travel dates May 20–22, 2026 — with the ticket required to be reissued on or before May 25, 2026, and booked travel required to begin no later than May 25, 2026.
The KLM and Delta waivers share the same deadline because KLM and Delta are Sky Team alliance partners operating a joint transatlantic venture. Passengers who booked a KLM-coded flight operated by Delta — or a Delta-coded flight sold through KLM — should check whether their rebooking is best handled through Delta or KLM.

Delta waiver specifics: When rebooked travel occurs on or before May 25, 2026, in the same cabin of service as originally booked, the fare difference will be waived. When rebooked travel occurs after May 25, 2026, a difference in fare may apply.

The KLM and Delta New York weather waiver was triggered by the combination of three converging disruption events that hit the New York metropolitan area airports during May 20–22:
🔴 LaGuardia sinkhole — Runway 4/22 closed 72 hours: A sinkhole discovered during a routine morning inspection at LaGuardia on May 20 forced the closure of Runway 4/22 from 11:00 AM Wednesday through approximately 8:00 PM Friday May 22. LaGuardia running on a single runway for 72 hours produced 290 cancellations and 310 delays on May 20 alone — the worst single-day disruption at LGA in the entire 55-day US aviation crisis.
🟠 East Coast thunderstorm system — May 20–22: The same convective storm system that hit Dallas-Fort Worth with 250+ delays on May 20 moved northeast and struck the New York corridor simultaneously with the sinkhole closure. Newark, JFK, and LaGuardia were all absorbing weather-driven arrival spacing restrictions at the same time as LaGuardia’s single-runway constraint.
🟡 Day 52–54 national network positioning debt: Fifty-two to fifty-four consecutive days of above-normal US aviation disruption meant that aircraft and crews scheduled to pass through New York on May 20–22 were not where the schedule assumed they would be. The combination of sinkhole, weather, and positioning debt produced the multi-day New York disruption that triggered KLM and Delta’s waivers.
KLM issued the waiver proactively — before many flights were formally cancelled — because the airline recognised that the combination of factors would disrupt New York operations for multiple consecutive days. KLM flies daily Amsterdam–New York services on its Airbus A330 and Boeing 777 aircraft. With LaGuardia’s sinkhole and the thunderstorm system both active, KLM’s New York departures and arrivals were directly at risk.
If you read this article after midnight May 25 — the waiver has closed. Here is what you can still do:
Option 1 — Check if your flight was formally cancelled: If KLM cancelled your flight outright (not just delayed), your right to a full cash refund under EU261 (for EU-departing flights) and DOT regulations (for US-departing flights) remains in force regardless of when you claim it. The waiver deadline affects free change rights — not cancellation refund rights.
Option 2 — Check if your delay exceeded the EU261/DOT threshold: Under EU261: if your flight arrived at your final destination 3+ hours late and the cause was within KLM’s control, you may be entitled to €250–€600 compensation per passenger. Under DOT rules: if your flight was cancelled, a full cash refund is mandatory regardless of timing.
Option 3 — File a complaint if KLM failed to notify you of the waiver: Airlines are required under EU261 to inform passengers of their rights when flights are disrupted. If KLM did not notify you of the waiver during the disruption period, this failure may itself be grounds for a complaint to the Dutch Civil Aviation Authority (ILT): ilent.nl — or to the US DOT: airconsumer.dot.gov.
Option 4 — No-win-no-fee claims services: AirHelp, AirAdvisor, and Skycop all handle EU261 and DOT claims against KLM on a no-win-no-fee basis. They will assess your eligibility for compensation, refunds, or expense reimbursement at no upfront cost to you.
The New York weather waiver is not the only KLM travel alert currently active. Passengers on other KLM routes should check for disruptions affecting their specific itinerary:
Middle East suspensions (still active): KLM flights to and from Dammam and Riyadh are suspended up to and including Sunday, June 28, 2026. Dubai flights to and from Dubai are suspended up to and including Sunday, June 28, 2026. Passengers booked on KLM services to the Gulf region through late June should contact KLM for the current rebooking and refund options for Middle East suspension — a separate, longer-duration waiver applies.
Middle East waiver details: Separate from the New York weather waiver — covers flights to Dammam, Riyadh, Dubai, and other Middle Eastern destinations from Saturday February 28 through Thursday June 11, 2026. Rebooking available with new departure by Sunday July 5, 2026.
The KLM waiver is a voluntary, proactive measure that gives passengers more flexibility than the law requires. Behind the waiver sits the mandatory EU261 framework:
EU Regulation EC 261/2004 applies to all KLM flights departing from EU airports (Amsterdam Schiphol and other EU cities), and to all KLM flights arriving into EU airports on KLM-operated metal (the EU carrier rule applies on inbound flights too). For US-departing KLM services, DOT regulations apply.
EU261 entitlements for KLM passengers (regardless of waiver):
| Situation | Your Right |
|---|---|
| Flight cancelled | Full cash refund within 7 days — mandatory, no exceptions |
| Flight cancelled | Free rebooking to final destination at earliest opportunity |
| Delay 3hr+ (EU departure) | Potential €250–€600 cash compensation if within KLM control |
| Delay 5hr+ (any flight) | Right to withdraw — full refund of unused ticket |
| Any delay while waiting | Meals, refreshments, 2 free communications |
| Overnight airline-caused | Hotel accommodation + ground transport |
EU261 compensation scale for KLM:
| Distance | Compensation |
|---|---|
| Under 1,500km | €250 per passenger |
| 1,500–3,500km | €400 per passenger |
| Over 3,500km (e.g. New York–Amsterdam) | €600 per passenger |
New York–Amsterdam (KL641/KL642) distance: approximately 5,850km — €600 compensation per passenger if qualifying delay within KLM control.
Claim timeline: EU261 claims can be filed up to 3 years from the flight date in the Netherlands. Do not let urgency around today’s waiver deadline cause you to miss a separate EU261 compensation claim you may be entitled to file later.
