The world just got a new largest cruise ship. Royal Caribbean’s Legend of the Seas β the third vessel in the Icon Class, the class that already holds every record in maritime history β was delivered from the Meyer Turku Shipyard in Finland on June 10, 2026. At 250,800 gross tons, she is slightly larger than her sisters Icon of the Seas and Star of the Seas, edging both to claim the title of world’s largest cruise ship by total volume. She carries 7,600 guests at full capacity across 2,814 staterooms, is powered by liquefied natural gas, and brings 40+ dining venues, 8 distinct neighbourhoods, and brand-new experiences including the Royal Railway and the Hollywoodland Supper Club. The part that matters most for UK and European cruisers: Legend of the Seas is the first Icon-class ship ever to homeport in Europe. Her maiden voyage departs Rome on July 4, 2026. If you have ever wanted to sail the world’s largest ship without flying to Miami first, this is your moment.
The handover ceremony at the Meyer Turku Shipyard in Turku, Finland, marked the official transfer of Legend of the Seas from the shipyard to Royal Caribbean International. The delivery concludes nearly two years of construction β the vessel departed the building yard in Turku in April 2026 for sea trials before returning for final completion, and is now sailing to CΓ‘diz, Spain, for final outfitting work ahead of her July 4 maiden voyage.
Royal Caribbean CEO Michael Bayley was present at the delivery: “We’re incredibly proud to introduce Legend of the Seas to vacationers and continue the legacy of the revolutionary Icon Class.” The ceremony also marked a broader milestone β Royal Caribbean simultaneously signed a framework agreement with Meyer Turku securing shipbuilding slots through 2036, confirming the construction of Icon-class vessels 5, 6 and 7 in 2028, 2029 and 2030 respectively. The Icon class is not a one-off experiment. It is the long-term architecture of the world’s most-booked cruise line.
Legend of the Seas is Royal Caribbean’s 30th ship β completing the line’s fleet to three decades of vessels spanning everything from the 1996-era Grandeur of the Seas to today’s 250,800-gross-ton floating city. It is also the fourth Royal Caribbean ship powered by liquefied natural gas, advancing the company’s stated goal of a net-zero cruise ship by 2035.
Royal Caribbean’s Chief Marketing Officer Kara Wallace explained the naming decision: “The Icon Class as a name really sets a really high bar β so we needed a third name that really fit with that. Legend is not only fitting of the class, but an homage to everything that came before it.”
The name revives one of Royal Caribbean’s most fondly remembered ships β the original Legend of the Seas, which served from 1995 to 2024 and was one of the line’s Vision-class vessels. The new Legend of the Seas shares only the name with its predecessor β in every other respect, it is in a completely different category of vessel.
250,800 gross tons is a number that requires context to mean anything. Here is that context:
| Ship | Class | Year | Gross Tonnage | Capacity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Legend of the Seas | Icon Class | 2026 | 250,800 GT | 7,600 |
| Star of the Seas | Icon Class | 2025 | ~250,800 GT | 7,600 |
| Icon of the Seas | Icon Class | 2024 | 248,663 GT | 7,600 |
| Wonder of the Seas | Oasis Class | 2022 | 236,857 GT | 6,988 |
| Symphony of the Seas | Oasis Class | 2018 | 228,081 GT | 6,680 |
| Harmony of the Seas | Oasis Class | 2016 | 226,963 GT | 6,687 |
| Allure of the Seas | Oasis Class | 2010 | 225,282 GT | 6,318 |
| Oasis of the Seas | Oasis Class | 2009 | 225,282 GT | 6,296 |
At 1,198 feet (365 metres) in length, Legend of the Seas is approximately as long as the Empire State Building is tall (1,454 feet including antenna, but 1,250 feet to roof). It spans 18 passenger decks β from Deck 2 to Deck 20. Its beam (width) is 213 feet, and its draft is 27 feet.
The 250,800 gross tonnage figure refers to internal volume β not weight. Gross tonnage measures usable interior space. Legend of the Seas has more interior space than any ship ever built, which is what enables its 40+ dining venues, 8 distinct neighbourhoods, multiple pools, waterparks, theatres, and the equivalent of a small theme park’s worth of attractions within a single vessel.
Passengers who have sailed on Icon of the Seas and Star of the Seas describe the experience less as being on a ship and more as being in a resort that happens to move between cities overnight. The relevant comparison is not other cruise ships β it is a Las Vegas resort hotel crossed with a water park crossed with a Broadway theatre district, all aboard a vessel that arrives in a different country every morning.
For UK passengers specifically: the equivalent land-based comparison for a 7-night Mediterranean Legend of the Seas cruise is flying to Rome, then flying to Naples, then flying to Barcelona, then flying to Majorca, then flying to Marseille, then flying to La Spezia β with five different hotels, five sets of airport transfers, five hotel check-ins, and the cost and exhaustion of managing all of that logistics across seven days. A Legend of the Seas cruise does all of that with one embarkation, one cabin, and the ship as your hotel every night.
Icon-class ships are built around eight themed neighbourhoods rather than the traditional deck-by-deck layout. Each neighbourhood is a self-contained destination within the ship. Legend of the Seas shares the core eight with Icon of the Seas and Star of the Seas, with several new additions:
The AquaDome is a glass-enclosed entertainment dome at the bow of the ship featuring the AquaTheater β a spectacular water-acrobatics performance venue with high dives, synchronised swimming and aerial feats. The AquaDome also houses the Category 6 waterpark β the largest waterpark at sea β with six waterslides including the tallest waterslide ever built on a cruise ship.
An open-air park running through the middle of the ship, lined with over 20,000 live plants and trees, surrounded by restaurants, boutiques, and a concert stage. Central Park hosts live music nightly and connects multiple dining and entertainment venues in an al fresco environment that feels nothing like a ship.
Four pools including the iconic Cove Pool β an infinity-edge pool that appears to extend directly into the ocean β and the adults-only Cloud 17 solarium with its own separate pool and Jacuzzi. Chill Island is the primary sun-and-swim destination for passengers seeking a more relaxed experience.
The FlowRider surf simulator, the North Star glass observation capsule (rising 300+ feet above sea level), zip lines, rock climbing walls, a mini golf course, and multiple sports courts. Thrill Island is where families with children β and adventure-seeking adults β spend most of their sea days.
A four-deck-high indoor promenade running the length of the ship, lined with shops, bars, restaurants, live entertainment stages and casual dining. The Royal Promenade hosts parades, street performers and events throughout the cruise. It functions as the social spine of the entire ship.
A dedicated family neighbourhood with its own dedicated pool, splash zone, kid-specific dining venues, a carousel, and family-oriented entertainment. Surfside is specifically designed so that families with young children have their own enclosed, safe, family-calibrated space separate from adult areas.
A multi-level adults-only area at the rear of the ship featuring a beach club-themed infinity pool, multiple Jacuzzis, cocktail bars, and a DJ stage. The Hideaway is the adults’ answer to Surfside β a space designed exclusively for passengers 18 and over.
Spanning three decks, the Suite Neighbourhood is an exclusive enclave for suite passengers featuring two private restaurants β The Grove (Mediterranean alfresco) and Coastal Kitchen β a private sundeck with its own pool and Jacuzzis, a dedicated concierge team, and butler service. Suite passengers have access to the entire ship but also have this private retreat that other guests cannot enter.
While Legend of the Seas shares the Icon-class DNA with her sisters, she introduces several new venues and experiences not available on Icon of the Seas:
The Royal Railway is a signature dining experience that simulates a journey through the American Southwest aboard a converted train carriage. Originally debuted on Utopia of the Seas, it makes its Mediterranean debut on Legend of the Seas. Guests dine in vintage rail car-styled seats as animated scenery passes the “windows” β a cinematic dining experience unlike anything else at sea.
A jazz-infused supper club experience that transitions from a black-and-white 1940s Hollywood aesthetic to full colour as the evening progresses. The Hollywoodland Supper Club is Legend’s signature premium dining venue β a ticketed experience combining live jazz performance with a tasting menu.
Legend of the Seas hosts a live version of America’s Got Talent in its main theatre, featuring real auditioned performers from the franchise. This is the first time the AGT brand has appeared on a cruise ship in this format β a partnership between Royal Caribbean and NBCUniversal.
The Ultimate Family Townhouse β a multi-deck private suite for families, with its own private slide between levels, a dedicated Royal Genie butler, in-suite theatre, and complimentary specialty dining for all occupants β has been redesigned on Legend with additional space and a direct connection to the Surfside neighbourhood.
Legend of the Seas features 40+ dining and bar venues β slightly more than the 40 on Icon of the Seas. New additions include the Hollywoodland Supper Club and Royal Railway alongside the standard Icon-class venues: Chops Grille (steakhouse), Giovanni’s (Italian), Izumi (Japanese/sushi), Hooked Seafood, El Loco Fresh (Mexican), Park CafΓ©, Sorrento’s Pizza, Windjammer CafΓ© (main buffet), and the Main Dining Room (included with cruise fare).
Legend of the Seas becomes the first Icon-class ship ever to homeport in Europe. This is significant for UK, Irish, Australian and European cruisers who want to sail the world’s largest ship without a transatlantic flight to Miami or Fort Lauderdale.
Maiden Voyage:
Summer Mediterranean Schedule: All sailings are 7-night itineraries departing from either Rome (Civitavecchia) or Barcelona. Two homeports allow passengers to choose their embarkation city based on their preferred transatlantic flight connection.
| Homeport | Ports of call | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Rome (Civitavecchia) | Naples Β· Barcelona Β· Palma de Mallorca Β· Marseille Β· La Spezia (Cinque Terre) | 7 nights |
| Barcelona | Naples Β· Palma de Mallorca Β· Marseille Β· La Spezia Β· Rome (Civitavecchia) | 7 nights |
For UK passengers: Fly LondonβBarcelona (2 hours, multiple daily easyJet, British Airways and Vueling services) or LondonβRome (2h30m, British Airways, Ryanair, easyJet) to embark. A 7-night Mediterranean cruise brings you to Naples, Palma de Mallorca, Marseille, Cinque Terre and back β five different countries or regions in seven days.
For Australian passengers: Position to Barcelona or Rome via Dubai (Emirates), Doha (Qatar Airways), or Singapore (Singapore Airlines). The new Riyadh Air London service (launched June 10) opens a Riyadh-connecting routing through London to Barcelona.
A 13-day westbound transatlantic crossing departs Barcelona on October 25, 2026, sailing to Fort Lauderdale. This is one of the most sought-after cruise itineraries in the calendar β a crossing on the world’s largest ship, typically calling at CΓ‘diz (Spain) and Azores or Bermuda. Pricing for transatlantic crossings typically offers significantly better per-night value than Caribbean or Mediterranean itineraries of similar length.
From November 2026, Legend of the Seas operates from Port Everglades, Fort Lauderdale β a new homeport for Icon-class ships, which previously operated Icon of the Seas and Star of the Seas exclusively from Miami. Two Caribbean itinerary types are available:
6-night Western Caribbean & Perfect Day: Fort Lauderdale β Perfect Day at CocoCay (Bahamas) β Falmouth (Jamaica) β Labadee (Haiti) β Fort Lauderdale
8-night Southern Caribbean & Perfect Day: Fort Lauderdale β CuraΓ§ao β Aruba β Cabo Rojo (Dominican Republic) β Perfect Day at CocoCay β Fort Lauderdale
These are the first 6-night and 8-night Icon-class itineraries β Icon of the Seas and Star of the Seas operate exclusively on 7-night sailings. The 6 and 8-night options give Legend of the Seas a scheduling flexibility that suits different holiday lengths.
Perfect Day at CocoCay: All Caribbean sailings include Perfect Day at CocoCay β Royal Caribbean’s private island in the Bahamas, widely considered the best private island destination in the cruise industry. CocoCay features its own waterpark, lagoon beach, helium balloon ride, overwater bungalows, and exclusive restaurants.
Legend of the Seas pricing follows the Royal Caribbean framework for Icon-class ships. Based on current availability:
| Cabin type | From price (per person, per night) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Interior cabin | From Β£120 / $150 / AUD 220 | No window β best for budget-conscious |
| Ocean View cabin | From Β£145 / $180 / AUD 260 | Fixed porthole window |
| Balcony cabin | From Β£175 / $220 / AUD 320 | Private balcony β most popular choice |
| Premium balcony | From Β£200 / $260 / AUD 380 | Larger balcony, upgraded location |

All prices are approximate per person based on double occupancy for 7-night sailings. Prices vary significantly by sailing date, departure port, and how far in advance you book. Early booking discounts of 20β30% are typical for sailings more than 6 months in advance.

UK flight options for Mediterranean embarkation:
Book at royalcaribbean.com or through US cruise specialists. The Fort Lauderdale Caribbean programme from November 2026 is the primary US embarkation option β Fort Lauderdale’s Port Everglades is accessible from Fort LauderdaleβHollywood International Airport (FLL), approximately 5 minutes from the port by car.
Royal Caribbean Australia: royalcaribbean.com/au or 1800 754 500. Australian passengers typically position to Barcelona or Rome via Emirates (Dubai), Qatar Airways (Doha), Singapore Airlines (Singapore) or Etihad (Abu Dhabi) for the European season. The Caribbean season from November offers a positioning option via American Airlines, Delta or United to Fort Lauderdale.
Legend of the Seas is the third of what is now confirmed to be at least seven Icon-class ships:
| Ship | Delivery | Homeport |
|---|---|---|
| Icon of the Seas | January 2024 | Miami |
| Star of the Seas | August 2025 | Port Canaveral |
| Legend of the Seas | June 2026 | Barcelona / Rome β Fort Lauderdale |
| Hero of the Seas | 2027 | TBC |
| Icon Class 5 | 2028 | TBC |
| Icon Class 6 | 2029 | TBC |
| Icon Class 7 | 2030 | TBC |
Royal Caribbean’s framework agreement with Meyer Turku signed at the Legend delivery ceremony runs through 2036, securing the shipyard’s capacity for the entire Icon-class expansion programme.
Hero of the Seas (2027) is the next Icon-class ship to watch. Royal Caribbean has not yet announced Hero’s homeport or itineraries β the announcement is expected in Q3 2026. Based on the pattern of its sisters, Hero is likely to homeport in a US East Coast port for Caribbean itineraries.
The practical differences are minor β both are Icon-class ships of near-identical size and layout. The deciding factors are:
