Published: October 9, 2026 — Friday (⚠️ HAPPENING RIGHT NOW · ATM Group 24-hour strike · Called by AL-Cobas + Confial Trasporti · Sources: ATM official, Wanted in Milan, Strike Tracker — confirmed)

If you are in Milan today, the metro may not come.

Milan’s entire ATM Group public transport network — all five metro lines, all city trams, all city buses, and the Como–Brunate funicular — is on a 24-hour strike today, Friday October 9, 2026. The walkout was called by unions AL-Cobas and Confial Trasporti in opposition to the privatisation of ATM Group services, and it covers the full operating day.

Two guaranteed service windows exist — before 08:45 and between 15:00 and 18:00. Outside those windows, every metro line, every tram, and every city bus may stop entirely. If you are trying to reach Milan Linate Airport right now and it is past 08:45, the M4 Blue Line is not a reliable option. If your departure is this afternoon after 18:00, the M4 is not reliable either.

Here is everything you need right now: the exact safe hours, your Linate alternatives, and how to reach the rest of the city without ATM today.

Published: October 9, 2026 — ⚠️ LIVE TODAY Operator struck: ATM Group — Milan’s metro, trams AND buses Strike called by: AL-Cobas + Confial Trasporti (separate proclamations) Duration: 24 hours — full day Friday October 9 ALL FIVE metro lines at risk: M1 (Red) · M2 (Green) · M3 (Yellow) · M4 (Blue/Linate) · M5 (Lilac) ALL surface routes at risk: Every ATM tram line · Every ATM city bus Como–Brunate funicular: Also ATM-operated — at risk

✅ SERVICES WILL RUN — guaranteed windows:

  • Start of service → 08:45 ✅ SAFE
  • 15:00 → 18:00 ✅ SAFE (3-hour afternoon window)

⚠️ SERVICES MAY NOT RUN — high-risk hours:

  • 08:45 → 15:00 — do NOT rely on any ATM service
  • 18:00 → end of service — do NOT rely on any ATM service

M4 Linate Airport: ⚠️ NOT RELIABLE outside guaranteed windows — use taxi or private transfer Malpensa Express (Trenord): ✅ NOT ATM — running normally today — Malpensa passengers unaffected Bergamo Orio al Serio (SACBO shuttle): ✅ NOT ATM — running normally today Monza services: Limited — run until 09:00 and between 11:50–14:50 ATM live updates: atm.it · ATM Milano app Taxi pre-book: intaxi.it · IT Taxi app · +02 0101 (Radio Taxi Milan)

Part 1 — The M4 Linate Situation: What You Must Do RIGHT NOW

The M4 Blue Line is Milan’s newest metro line, opened in 2022, connecting San Babila in the city centre to Linate Airport in 12 minutes. On any other Friday, it is the fastest and cheapest way to reach the airport. Today it is unreliable for most of the day.

If your Linate flight departs before approximately 10:30am: You should have been able to travel on the M4 before 08:45 during the guaranteed window. If you have not yet left for the airport and it is now past 08:45, do not take the M4. Take a taxi, Uber, or Bolt immediately.

If your Linate flight departs between approximately 12:30pm and 5:00pm: The guaranteed 15:00–18:00 window does not help you for a midday departure. You need a taxi or private transfer. Book one now — not when you are already running late.

If your Linate flight departs after 8:00pm: The evening high-risk window begins at 18:00. You cannot rely on the M4 after 18:00. Book a taxi or private transfer for your airport journey.

The only safe M4 windows today:

  • Before 08:45: travel must BEGIN before this time
  • 15:00 to 18:00: a 12-minute M4 journey to Linate can complete comfortably within this window — if your flight allows the timing

How long does it really take to reach Linate by taxi today?

Normally 15–20 minutes from central Milan, costing approximately €25–35. Today, with significantly higher taxi demand as thousands of Milanese abandon the metro, journey times and wait times will be longer. Pre-booked taxis via app will have priority over street hails. Book now, not at the airport door.

Part 2 — Your Linate Alternatives Today

Taxi — RECOMMENDED:

Milan has a regulated taxi system. Do not use unmarked vehicles. Options:

  • inTaxi app: intaxi.it — aggregates licensed Milan taxis, book in advance
  • IT Taxi app: ittaxi.it — official Italian taxi app, available in Milan
  • Radio Taxi Milan: +02 0101 or +02 8585 — phone booking
  • Uber/Bolt: Both operate in Milan. Surge pricing applies today. Book through the app.
  • Estimated fare (city centre → Linate): €25–40 depending on starting point and traffic
  • Estimated journey time today: Allow 25–40 minutes due to higher road demand

Private transfer — pre-booked:

If you have not yet pre-booked, options include GoOpti (goo.gl/goopti), Blacklane (blacklane.com), or your hotel concierge. Private transfers are typically fixed price and may be faster to confirm than taxis during a busy strike day.

Bus line 73 (ATM city bus — AT RISK today):

Normally bus 73 connects Piazza San Babila (M1/M4 interchange) to Linate Airport directly. Today, as an ATM surface route, it is also on strike and cannot be relied upon outside the guaranteed windows. Do not plan your airport journey on bus 73 during 08:45–15:00 or after 18:00.

If you are flying from Malpensa — you are completely unaffected:

The Malpensa Express is operated by Trenord, not ATM. It runs on the rail network, not the city metro. Today’s ATM strike has zero impact on the Malpensa Express from Centrale or Cadorna. If your flight is from Malpensa, travel normally.

If you are flying from Bergamo Orio al Serio — you are completely unaffected:

The SACBO shuttle bus from Centrale runs independently of ATM. Orio al Serio passengers can travel normally today.

Part 3 — Moving Around Milan Today Without ATM

If you are a tourist in Milan today with no airport journey, the city is still accessible — but the experience is very different from a normal Friday.

What is working:

  • Trenord regional trains: Running normally — connect Centrale, Garibaldi, Cadorna, Porta Venezia and other major stations with the wider Lombardy region
  • Intercity trains from Centrale: Running normally — national Trenitalia services unaffected
  • Taxis and ride-hailing: Available — expect higher demand and some wait times
  • BikeMi (bike share): City-wide docked bike share, completely independent of ATM — available as normal. Milan is reasonably flat in the centre — BikeMi is genuinely useful for moving between museums, restaurants, and central sights.
  • E-scooters (Lime, Bird, VOI): Available city-wide — unaffected by the ATM strike
  • Walking: The historic centre — Duomo, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, Brera, Navigli, Castello Sforzesco — is compact and walkable. Many key sights are within 20–30 minutes on foot from each other.

What is NOT working (or unreliable) during 08:45–15:00 and after 18:00:

  • M1 Red Line (Sesto–Rho Fieramilano): NOT reliable
  • M2 Green Line (Assago–Gessate/Cologno/Cernusco): NOT reliable
  • M3 Yellow Line (San Donato–Comasina): NOT reliable
  • M4 Blue Line (Linate–San Cristoforo): NOT reliable
  • M5 Lilac Line (Bignami–San Siro Stadio): NOT reliable
  • All ATM trams (lines 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 9, 10, 12, 14, 15, 16, 19, 24, 27): NOT reliable
  • All ATM buses: NOT reliable

Plan for the afternoon guaranteed window:

If you need to make any metro journey today, plan it for the 15:00–18:00 guaranteed window. This is a three-hour window — enough time for most tourist journeys across the city. Use it for transfers between your hotel and central sights, and to position yourself for an evening dinner without needing the metro again.

Part 4 — Why Workers Are Striking Today

AL-Cobas and Confial Trasporti called the strike in opposition to the liberalisation, privatisation and competitive tendering of services currently operated by the ATM Group. Confial Trasporti has added specific demands including improved accessibility for blind passengers, clearer scheduling of drivers’ shifts and breaks, and staff housing. Two workers’ demonstrations are also planned during the day at the ATM depot in Viale Sarca and at the company’s offices in Via Messina.

Milan’s ATM Group is one of Italy’s largest urban transport operators. The unions’ concerns reflect a broader Italian labour movement pushback against public service privatisation that has driven similar strikes throughout 2026.

Will service be better than feared?

Strikes called by smaller unions in Milan have historically seen lower-than-announced participation, with many drivers choosing to continue working. ATM has not published real-time participation rates. The guaranteed windows are the floor — actual service may run more widely if participation is lower than expected. However, the prudent approach is to treat the strike as complete during the high-risk windows and treat any service that does appear as a bonus, not a plan.

Monitor atm.it and the ATM Milano app throughout the day for any updates to the service picture.

What Else Is Disrupted Today Across Italy and Europe

If you are travelling beyond Milan today, the disruption picture across Europe is exceptionally broad on Friday October 9:

  • Brussels Airport: ~140 flight cancellations — Brussels Airlines 40% of schedule cut — Alyzia ground staff national strike — see our dedicated article
  • Leeds Bradford Airport (UK): Security staff industrial action — arrive 3 hours early
  • Florence–Pisa trains: Empoli–Pisa section SUSPENDED — no direct Florence–Pisa trains all weekend — see our dedicated article
  • Romagna: Start Romagna buses on 24-hour strike — Rimini, Ravenna, Forlì, Cesena affected
  • Sicily: RFI security staff strike knock-on effects

And in seven days — October 16 — Italy faces a simultaneous multi-layer aviation crisis: easyJet 24-hour cabin crew strike, ENAV ATC four-hour stoppage, Venice Marco Polo security walkout, and Tuscany airports ground staff strike. If you are flying to or from Italy on October 16, check your booking immediately.
