Italy enters October 2026 with more than a dozen confirmed strikes spread across the entire month. The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport’s official strike register lists national actions, regional walkouts, city-level stoppages and a dedicated aviation strike — all within 30 days. The most significant dates for international travellers are October 2 (national rail and multi-sector), October 9 (Milan ATM metro and buses), October 16 (easyJet 24-hour nationwide cabin crew strike + ENAV ATC 4-hour stoppage + Venice Marco Polo airport security), October 14 (Tuscany regional general strike), and October 30 (national general strike). Already covered in detail in our October 2 Italy National Strike article published today — key facts:
The CSLE union has called a national multi-sector strike for Friday October 2. The rail window runs from 11:00am to 2:00pm. Trenord has published its Lombardy and Malpensa Express service plan — replacement buses confirmed between Milan Cadorna and Malpensa Terminal 1. Long-distance Frecciarossa, Frecciargento and Frecciabianca services are guaranteed. Italo Treno services are guaranteed.
What to do: Avoid regional trains between 11:00am and 2:00pm tomorrow. Book Frecciarossa or Italo for any long-distance journey. For Malpensa Airport — allow 45 extra minutes and use the Trenord replacement bus from Via Paleocapa 1, Milano Cadorna.
Staff of Genoa’s public transport operator AMT intend to go on a 24-hour strike on Saturday, October 3rd. The strike affects all AMT Genova buses, the metro and trams in the Ligurian capital.
Who is affected: Anyone in Genoa city on Saturday October 3 — cruise passengers transiting through Genoa port, visitors to the city, passengers connecting to Genoa Cristoforo Colombo Airport by public bus.
What to do: Pre-book a taxi or private transfer for any Genoa movement on October 3. The airport bus from Genoa city centre (Volabus) is operated by AMT — check its October 3 status at amt.genova.it before travelling. Ryanair and other carriers operate from Genoa Cristoforo Colombo Airport (GOA) — if flying from Genoa on October 3, arrive early and pre-arrange ground transport.
Milan’s transport network of metro, buses and trams is set to be impacted on Friday, October 9th as staff of operator ATM have announced a 24-hour strike. A 24-hour strike is scheduled for local public transport across Lombardy on 9 October 2026.
This is your second highest-impact city-level strike of the month. ATM operates all four Milan metro lines (M1 Red, M2 Green, M3 Yellow, M4 Blue), all surface buses and all trams throughout Milan.
Critical for airport passengers: The M4 metro line connects Milan Linate Airport directly to the city centre. If ATM strikes for 24 hours on October 9, the M4 to Linate does not run. The Malpensa Express is operated by Trenord (separate from ATM) and should be unaffected — but verify at trenord.it the night before.
Who is affected: Anyone in Milan on Friday October 9 — business travellers, tourists, passengers connecting to or from Linate Airport via M4, anyone relying on buses or trams for city movement.
What to do: Pre-book taxis or private transfers for all Milan city movement on October 9. Do not rely on the M4 to Linate. Arrive at Linate Airport by taxi, Uber or private car. Check atm.it on October 8 evening for any confirmed minimum services — Italian law requires guaranteed services during peak windows, but ATM will confirm the specific plan.
October 8: FS Security in Sicily — 24-hour strike affecting railway security staff in Sicily. Minor operational impact for passengers on Sicily train routes.
October 12–13: A regional rail strike is scheduled in Sicily from 21:01 on 12 October to 21:00 on 13 October 2026. This is a 24-hour overnight-into-Tuesday stoppage affecting RFI Infrastrutture Sicilia and DOIT Palermo.
Who is affected: Travellers using Trenitalia trains in Sicily on the night of October 12 and throughout October 13 — Palermo, Catania, Messina, Agrigento rail connections.
What to do: If you are in Sicily on October 12–13, avoid night trains after 21:00 on the 12th and all trains on October 13. Check trenitalia.com for guaranteed services. Book a bus (FlixBus, Interbus, Etna Trasporti) as a backup for Sicily rail journeys on these dates.
A local public transport strike is scheduled in Florence, Tuscany, for 10 October 2026, lasting 24 hours. This affects tram services in Florence only.
Who is affected: Visitors using the T1 or T2 tram lines in Florence — particularly passengers using T2 to reach Florence Airport (Peretola). The T2 connects Florence Santa Maria Novella station directly to the airport.
What to do: If flying into or out of Florence on October 10 — pre-book a taxi or use the Sita Nord airport bus as an alternative to the T2 tram.
October 16 is the single most dangerous day for air travellers in Italy this month. Three separate aviation actions coincide:
EasyJet Airlines Limited flight crew are scheduled to strike nationwide on 16 October, from 00:00 to 23:59. This is a full 24-hour, midnight-to-midnight walkout covering all easyJet cabin crew in Italy.
The register also lists a 13:00 to 17:00 action involving the ENAV Bari Airport unit on 6 November.
EasyJet operates extensive Italy routes from the UK — Gatwick, Bristol, Manchester, Edinburgh, Liverpool and Luton all serve Italian destinations including Milan, Rome, Naples, Venice, Bologna and Cagliari. Every one of these routes is at risk on October 16.
EU261 rights on October 16 easyJet strike: Because this is the airline’s own crew walking out, EU261 cash compensation of up to €600 applies if your flight is cancelled or delayed by more than 3 hours — provided the airline gave you less than 14 days’ notice of the cancellation. If easyJet cancels your flight more than 14 days in advance, compensation is not payable but you are still entitled to a full refund or rebooking.
What to do: Check easyjet.com for your October 16 booking immediately. If your flight has not yet been cancelled, contact easyJet now to discuss alternatives. Do not wait for a cancellation notification on the day.
A national strike by ENAV staff — Italy’s air navigation service provider — is confirmed for October 16, covering a 4-hour window from 13:00 to 17:00. This affects all flights using Italian airspace during the afternoon window — not just easyJet, but every airline departing from or arriving in Italy between 1pm and 5pm.
Who is affected: Every airline operating Italian departures or arrivals on October 16 afternoon — British Airways, Ryanair, ITA Airways, Vueling, Wizz Air, Lufthansa, Emirates, American Airlines, and all others.
EU261 rights on ENAV strike: Because ENAV is a third-party operator (not the airline’s own staff), this is likely to be treated as “extraordinary circumstances” — meaning cash compensation is not payable for cancellations or delays caused solely by the ATC stoppage. However, your right to rebooking and care (meals, hotel if overnight) always applies.
Security screening staff employed by contractor Sicuritalia IVRI at Venice Marco Polo Airport are called to a 24-hour strike on Friday October 16. This affects security screening at VCE only — but a full-day security strike at Venice means significant queue disruption even for flights that are otherwise operating.
What to do: If flying from Venice on October 16 — arrive a minimum of 3.5 hours before your flight. Security queues during a screening staff strike can extend to 2 hours or more.
Five unions representing pilots and flight attendants have called for a nationwide strike on October 17, 2026. This is a separate action from the easyJet October 16 walkout — two consecutive days of aviation industrial action.
Who is affected: Any airline whose crew members belong to ANPAC, ANACNA, USB Lavoro Privato, FILT-CGIL or other filing unions. Likely to include ITA Airways, Ryanair Italy-based crew, Vueling Italy crew.
What to do: Avoid October 16 AND October 17 for Italy flights if at all possible. If you must fly, book Frecciarossa or Italo as a fallback for any Italy-internal journey.
A regional general strike affecting various sectors including transportation will lead to disruptions in public transport and other services throughout Tuscany. Rail travel is scheduled to be impacted from 9am to 5pm and public transport for the last four hours of workers’ shifts. Air travel remains exempt according to the current strike notice.
Who is affected: Visitors in Tuscany on October 14 — Florence, Pisa, Siena, Arezzo, Lucca, Livorno, Grosseto. All regional Trenitalia trains in Tuscany during the 9am–5pm window. Florence city buses and trams in the final 4 hours of the afternoon shift.
What to do: Florence city visitors — avoid all regional train journeys in Tuscany between 9:00am and 5:00pm on October 14. Frecciarossa services between Florence and Rome or Milan are guaranteed. Italo Treno services are guaranteed. Check ataf.net (Florence buses) and at trenord.it for specific Tuscany guarantees.
The month concludes on Friday, 30 October, with a 24-hour national general strike called by the grassroots union USI-CIT. A general strike by public and private sector workers on October 30, 2026 covers all public and private sector workers in Italy for 24 hours.
Who is affected: Potentially everyone in Italy on October 30 — rail passengers, metro users, airport workers, ground handlers, port workers and ferry passengers. October 30 is the Friday before Halloween weekend and immediately precedes the Italy/Amalfi shoulder season travel peak.
What to do: October 30 is 29 days away — additional details on which transport sectors and specific operators are participating will be published by Italian operators in the week before. Bookmark this page for updates. If you are flying to or from Italy on October 30, monitor your airline’s app and check for proactive cancellations from October 23 onwards.
Your highest risk dates are October 16 (easyJet 24hr + ENAV ATC) and October 17 (five-union aviation strike). easyJet is by far the most exposed carrier for UK–Italy routes. If you are flying easyJet to Italy on October 16 or 17, contact the airline now to discuss rebooking or a refund. October half-term begins in many UK schools from October 25 — families flying easyJet to Italy for half-term should check their outbound dates carefully. UK261 rights apply on all UK-departing flights cancelled due to airline staff strikes.
American Airlines operates New York JFK–Rome Fiumicino. Delta operates Atlanta and New York to Rome. Both are most exposed on October 16 due to the ENAV ATC stoppage affecting all airlines during the 13:00–17:00 window — not just easyJet. If your October 16 Italy flight arrives or departs during that window, expect delays. US DOT rights apply on US-departing flights; on Italy-departing return flights, EU261 rights apply.
Australian and NZ passengers in Italy in October most commonly transit through Milan Malpensa (MXP) or Rome Fiumicino (FCO) on Emirates, Qatar Airways or Singapore Airlines connections. October 9 Milan ATM strike directly affects M4 Linate transfers. October 16 ENAV ATC stoppage affects flights routing over Italy — including Emirates and Qatar transatlantic connections. Build generous buffers into any Italy connection on October 16.
Air Canada and Air Transat passengers transiting through Italian hubs are most at risk on October 16 (ENAV ATC) and October 30 (national general strike). If you are connecting in Italy on those dates, verify your airline’s rebooking policy before departure from Canada.
| Strike Date | Strike Type | Cash Compensation | Refund/Rebook | Care Rights |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oct 2 | Rail — not EU261 | N/A | N/A | Travel insurance |
| Oct 9 | City metro — not EU261 | N/A | N/A | Travel insurance |
| Oct 16 easyJet | Airline’s own crew | ✅ Up to €600 if <14 days notice | ✅ Always | ✅ Always |
| Oct 16 ENAV ATC | Third-party ATC | ❌ Extraordinary circumstances | ✅ Always | ✅ Always |
| Oct 16 VCE security | Third-party security | ❌ Extraordinary circumstances | ✅ Always | ✅ Always |
| Oct 17 five unions | Airline staff (if own crew) | ✅ Possible — check airline | ✅ Always | ✅ Always |
| Oct 30 general | Depends on sector | Depends — check airline | ✅ Always | ✅ Always |
Key rule: Your right to a full cash refund and to care (meals, hotel if overnight) is unconditional — it applies regardless of whether the disruption is “extraordinary circumstances” or not. What extraordinary circumstances removes is only the fixed cash compensation (€250/€400/€600). You can always demand a refund or rebooking.
