🚨 TWO AIRPORT STRIKES ARE HAPPENING RIGHT NOW TODAY — OCTOBER 14. IF YOU ARE FLYING THROUGH PISA, FLORENCE, OR LEEDS BRADFORD TODAY, READ THIS BEFORE YOU LEAVE FOR THE AIRPORT.
October 14, 2026 is one of the most disrupted single days in European aviation this autumn — and it has received almost no advance coverage. A Tuscany-wide regional general strike called by CGIL, the largest Italian trade union confederation, is underway today, bringing ground staff, check-in workers, baggage handlers, and airport operations personnel at both Pisa International Airport (PSA) and Florence Peretola Airport (FLR) to a standstill. Every passenger flying from either Tuscan airport today faces reduced ground services, potential security queue chaos, and possible flight cancellations throughout the day. Simultaneously — and completely separately — a security staff strike at Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA) in West Yorkshire begins today, running through Saturday October 18, with Unite the Union’s 130 security workers walking out in a dispute over pay. Jet2, Ryanair, Wizz Air, and easyJet all operate from Leeds Bradford, serving Málaga, Alicante, Almería, and other popular Spanish and European leisure destinations. And in two days — Thursday October 16 — Italy’s aviation disruption escalates further with the nationwide easyJet + ENAV strike that is already in your sitemap. Today’s Tuscany + Leeds Bradford strikes are the opening act of a three-day European aviation crisis that runs October 14–16. Here is everything happening right now and exactly what every affected passenger is owed.
Published: October 14, 2026 Strike 1 — Tuscany Regional General Strike (TODAY):
Strike 2 — Leeds Bradford Airport Security Strike (STARTS TODAY):
Coming in 2 Days — October 16:
The CGIL — Confederazione Generale Italiana del Lavoro — is Italy’s largest and most politically active trade union confederation, representing workers across virtually every sector of the Italian economy. A CGIL regional general strike in Tuscany is not a small, niche action. It is a broad industrial stoppage covering transport workers, public services, manufacturing, healthcare, and — crucially for air passengers — airport ground operations.
Pisa International Airport (Galileo Galilei Airport, PSA) and Florence Peretola Airport (Amerigo Vespucci Airport, FLR) are both operated by Toscana Aeroporti — the same airport management company. Their ground handling staff, check-in agents, baggage handlers, ramp workers, and airport operations crews are covered by today’s CGIL general strike action. This is not the same as an air traffic control strike — aircraft can still take off and land (weather permitting). What it disrupts is everything that happens on the ground: check-in, bag drop, security support, baggage loading, aircraft turnaround, and gate operations.
The impact on passengers is immediate and visible: check-in desks may be staffed at reduced levels or not at all, security queues may extend dramatically as fewer security lanes are operational, baggage processing may be severely delayed, and aircraft turnaround times may extend significantly — causing delays that cascade through the afternoon and evening schedule.
Under Italian Law 146/1990 on essential public services, strike action at airports must observe mandatory minimum service periods:
Protected Window 1: 07:00–10:00 local time — minimum services must be maintained Protected Window 2: 18:00–21:00 local time — minimum services must be maintained
This means flights departing during these two windows have the highest probability of operating. Flights departing between 10:00 and 18:00 — the peak afternoon band — face the highest disruption risk from today’s Tuscany general strike.
Pisa International is Tuscany’s primary air gateway, handling approximately 6 million passengers annually. It serves as the main arrival point for tourists visiting Florence (55 km by train — approximately 60–80 minutes), Pisa, Lucca, and the Tuscan coast. Ryanair, easyJet, Volotea, ITA Airways, and multiple charter carriers all operate from PSA.
For UK passengers: Ryanair and easyJet both operate extensive UK–Pisa services (London Stansted, London Gatwick, Bristol, Manchester, Edinburgh). On a typical October Tuesday, dozens of UK-originated flights depart and arrive at PSA. Today all of those are at risk of ground service delays.
Pisa Airport access alternative if your flight is cancelled: Florence Airport is 80 km north but also on strike today. The nearest unaffected major airport is Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport (BLQ) — approximately 90 km north of Florence (Autostrada A1). Alternatively, Rome Fiumicino (FCO) is 280 km south — accessible by Frecciargento train from Pisa Centrale in approximately 3.5 hours.
Florence Peretola Airport is smaller than Pisa but equally important for UK tourists. Ryanair, easyJet, Vueling, Air France, and Lufthansa all serve Florence. The airport sits just 4 km from Florence city centre — the shortest distance of any major Italian city airport from its city — meaning ground transport disruption is less severe here than at other airports. But ground staff disruption is the same as at Pisa.
For UK passengers: UK–Florence routes include London Gatwick (British Airways, easyJet), London Stansted (Ryanair), Manchester (easyJet), Bristol (easyJet). These are all at risk of ground service delays today.
Unite the Union representing approximately 130 security staff at Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA) in West Yorkshire is beginning a five-day strike today, October 14, running through Saturday October 18. The dispute is over pay — Unite members voted for industrial action after rejecting the airport’s wage offer.
Leeds Bradford Airport is the primary airport for West Yorkshire, serving a catchment area of approximately 4.5 million people across Leeds, Bradford, Harrogate, York, and surrounding areas. It is a significant Jet2 base — the package holiday carrier uses Leeds Bradford as one of its primary UK departure points for Spanish and Mediterranean holiday routes. Ryanair, Wizz Air, and easyJet also operate from LBA.
Security staff walking out at Leeds Bradford means the airport’s security screening capacity is severely reduced from today through Saturday. The airport may need to:
Every passenger departing Leeds Bradford between October 14 and October 18 should add a minimum of 90 minutes to their normal pre-departure airport arrival time.
Airlines operating from Leeds Bradford today and through Saturday:
Today’s Leeds Bradford security strike combined with the Spain Groundforce baggage handler strike (still active on Tuesday in some patterns) creates a double disruption for passengers on Jet2 and Ryanair LBA–Spain flights. UK passengers departing Leeds Bradford to Málaga, Alicante, or Almería today face potential ground disruption at BOTH ends of their journey — security queue chaos at Leeds Bradford on departure and possible baggage delays in Spain on arrival.
The CGIL Tuscany general strike is a third-party action — ground staff at Toscana Aeroporti’s two airports work for the airport management company, not for the airlines operating there. Under EU Regulation 261/2004, third-party ground staff strikes are generally classified as extraordinary circumstances:
❌ EU261 cash compensation (€250–€600) does NOT apply for disruptions caused by the Tuscany general strike ✅ Full cash refund — unconditional for any cancelled flight ✅ Free rebooking — on next available service ✅ Meals and refreshments — from 2-hour delay at the airport ✅ Hotel accommodation — if stranded overnight ✅ Transport to/from hotel — at airline expense
How to claim: Go to your airline’s desk at PSA or FLR. Say: “My flight has been [cancelled/significantly delayed] due to the Tuscany general strike. I am requesting [full cash refund / free rebooking] and meal vouchers under EU261 Article 9.”
The Leeds Bradford security strike is more complex from a compensation perspective. Airport security workers at LBA are employed by a third-party security contractor — not by the airlines or by Leeds Bradford Airport directly. Under UK261:
❌ UK261 cash compensation (£220–£520): Disputed — security contractor strike may be extraordinary circumstances ✅ Full cash refund — unconditional for any cancelled flight ✅ Free rebooking — on next available service ✅ Meals + hotel — duty of care unconditional
File anyway: Submit a UK261 compensation claim regardless. The legal position on security contractor strikes is not settled — some courts have found them compensable. Let the UK CAA adjudicate.

The exact claim phrase for Leeds Bradford passengers: “My flight [number] on October [14/15/16/17/18] was [cancelled/significantly delayed] due to the Leeds Bradford Airport security staff strike. I am claiming UK261 compensation of £[220/350/520] per passenger. Please confirm whether you are treating this as extraordinary circumstances and provide written reasons.”
Today’s Tuscany + Leeds Bradford strikes are not isolated. They are the first two days of a three-day European aviation disruption sequence:
| Date | Strike | Airports | Severity |
|---|---|---|---|
| TODAY — Oct 14 | Tuscany CGIL general strike | PSA + FLR | 🔴 HIGH |
| TODAY – Oct 18 | Leeds Bradford security | LBA | 🔴 HIGH — 5 days |
| Oct 16 (Thu) | Italy easyJet + ENAV aviation strike | Multiple Italy | 🔴 VERY HIGH |
| Oct 17 (Fri) | France aviation strike begins | CDG + multiple | 🔴 VERY HIGH |
The October 16 Italy easyJet + ENAV strike — is two days away. Any passenger with Italy flights on October 16–21 should be planning rebooking options today while alternatives are still available.
✅ Check your flight status immediately — go to your airline’s app and search your flight number ✅ Arrive 3 hours early minimum — the 10:00–18:00 window has the highest disruption risk; arrivals before 10:00 and after 18:00 benefit from protected service minimum ✅ Travel with carry-on only if possible — checked baggage is the primary disruption vector in ground staff strikes. If bags are delayed, file a PIR (Property Irregularity Report) immediately on arrival ✅ If delayed 2+ hours at the airport: demand meal vouchers from your airline’s desk immediately ✅ Alternative: Bologna Airport (BLQ) — 90 km north, not affected by today’s Tuscany strike
✅ Same guidance as Pisa — arrive 3 hours early, use carry-on only where possible ✅ Florence is 4 km from the airport — ground transport disruption is less severe than at Pisa, but terminal congestion may be significant ✅ Trenitalia: Florence Santa Maria Novella → Pisa Centrale: 55 minutes — useful if Florence is cancelled and Pisa is operating (though both are affected today)
✅ Arrive 90–120 minutes earlier than normal — security queues will extend significantly with reduced staffing ✅ Check Jet2, Ryanair, or easyJet app for your specific flight status before leaving home ✅ LBA alternative airports: Manchester (MAN) — 50 km south | Doncaster Sheffield (DSA) — 40 km southeast ✅ If your flight is cancelled: demand full cash refund to original payment method | contact Jet2: 0800 408 5591 | Ryanair: 0330 100 7838 | Wizz Air: 0330 977 0444 | easyJet: 0330 365 5000

Tuesday October 14, 2026 is a live dual-strike day across European aviation. The CGIL Tuscany regional general strike is hitting Pisa and Florence airports’ ground operations right now — every flight at both airports today faces reduced ground services, extended security queues, and possible cancellations. The protected windows (07:00–10:00 and 18:00–21:00) offer partial protection under Italian law, but the 10:00–18:00 window carries maximum disruption risk. Simultaneously, Leeds Bradford Airport’s 130 Unite security workers have begun a five-day strike running through October 18 — every Jet2, Ryanair, Wizz Air, and easyJet passenger flying from Leeds Bradford this week faces significantly extended security processing times and possible flight disruptions.
And in two days — Thursday October 16 — Italy’s aviation crisis escalates again with the nationwide easyJet + ENAV strike.
