Paris Taxi and Road Transport Strike TODAY October 17: Airport Access Roads to CDG and Orly Disrupted — Half-Term Families Take NOTE — France Aviation Strike IS Off But Getting TO the Airport Is the Problem — RER B, Orlyval and Alternatives Guide

UPDATE FOR OUR OCTOBER 16 READERS: Yesterday we confirmed that the France aviation strike for October 17–21 has been suspended — your Air France, Transavia and Corsair flights ARE operating. That remains correct. But a separate and equally disruptive problem has emerged overnight for passengers travelling to Paris airports TODAY. A taxi and road transport strike called by FO Transports, combined with Yellow Vest protest activity focusing on eastern Paris and airport access routes, is disrupting road journeys to Charles de Gaulle Airport and Paris Orly this morning. Your flight is operating. Getting to the airport on time is now the challenge. Here is everything you need to know and do right now.

🚨 PART 1: Two Separate Problems — Be Clear on Which Affects You

Before anything else, understand the distinction between the two simultaneous issues affecting Paris travel today:

Issue Status Affects
France aviation strike Oct 17–21 ✅ SUSPENDED Flights — Air France, Transavia, Corsair ARE OPERATING
Paris taxi and road transport strike 🔴 ACTIVE TODAY Road access to CDG and Orly airports
Yellow Vest / cost of living protests 🔴 ACTIVE TODAY Eastern Paris roads and airport access routes

In the air, flights are expected to operate normally: the strike notice from flight crew scheduled for October 17–21 has been suspended by the union umbrella. However, there is a strike notice filed by several road transport groups including FO Transports. The alert focuses mainly on eastern Paris, the roads, and access to the airports.

Your plane is not grounded. Your pilot is at work. Your cabin crew are at their gates. What is potentially compromised is your ability to reach the airport by road in time to catch that flight.

For a family travelling from central Paris to CDG or Orly by taxi, private transfer or car today — this is the story that matters.

🚕 PART 2: The Taxi Strike — What Drivers Are Demanding

The group is demanding “white zones” where platforms could no longer dispatch rides, strict verification of professional VTC cards, and the return of the “blue vests” tasked with guiding passengers in the terminals. Its president, Walid Hanida, denounces a state that weighs on the profession with fuel costs and charges, while allowing the platforms to run with minimal oversight.

The taxi strike is rooted in a long-running dispute between licensed Paris taxi drivers and ride-hailing platforms such as Uber, Bolt and Heetch. The drivers are demanding regulatory protection from the expansion of VTC (Voiture de Tourisme avec Chauffeur) platforms and want the government to enforce stricter licensing.

The practical effect: licensed taxis may be absent from airport taxi ranks and from central Paris pickup points today. Ride-hailing app drivers — who are VTC operators, not licensed taxis — may still be operating, but some may have joined the action in solidarity.

What this means at CDG and Orly: The taxi rank queues that normally form outside arrivals halls at CDG Terminal 2 and Orly Terminal 4 may be significantly reduced or absent during the strike period. Passengers who planned to take a taxi to the airport may find no taxis available at their hotel or street pick-up point.

🛣️ PART 3: Yellow Vest Protests and Road Transport Action

Along with taxi operations, there is a strike notice filed by several road transport groups including FO Transports. The alert focuses mainly on eastern Paris, the roads, and access to the airports. Transports in Île-de-France call for caution this weekend of October 17–18, 2026, as a protest against the cost of living is announced for Saturday, works on several lines get underway, and the first Toussaint departures begin.

There are no strikes announced on public transport. The metro, RER and Transilien services are NOT on strike today.

The Yellow Vest-aligned protest is focusing on road blockades rather than public transport disruption. Historically, Yellow Vest airport protests have targeted the A1 motorway (CDG), the A6a/A6b (Orly) and the périphérique ring road. Slow-rolling truck convoys and stationary protest gatherings on motorway access ramps are the typical tactic — they do not close roads but reduce traffic to a crawl.

The critical point: The metro, RER, and train networks are NOT on strike. This means rail alternatives to CDG and Orly are fully operational today and are your safest option for airport access.

🚆 PART 4: How to Reach CDG and Orly — Every Safe Alternative Today

✅ Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) — Rail Is Your Best Option

RER B (STRONGLY RECOMMENDED TODAY)

The RER B is the direct rail connection between central Paris and CDG. It is NOT affected by the taxi strike or road transport action.

Departure station Journey time to CDG Frequency
Gare du Nord ~25 minutes Every 10–15 min
Châtelet–Les Halles ~35 minutes Every 10–15 min
Saint-Michel–Notre-Dame ~40 minutes Every 10–15 min
Denfert-Rochereau ~45 minutes Every 10–15 min

RER B runs to CDG Terminal 2 (CDG 2 – TGV station) and CDG Terminal 1 (Aéroport CDG 1 station). Inter-terminal buses connect from both stations. Fare: approximately €11.80 from central Paris.

Today’s priority advice: Take the RER B. Do not rely on taxis or ride-hailing apps today. Add 15 minutes to your normal RER B journey time as platforms will be more crowded than usual due to taxi shortages.

Le Bus Direct (Airport Shuttle)

Le Bus Direct operates coach services from Paris city centre to CDG. These are road-based and may experience delays due to the road transport action. Use RER B in preference today.

Uber, Bolt, Heetch (VTC apps)

VTC platform drivers may still be operating — the strike is by licensed taxi drivers, not VTC operators. However, some VTC drivers may have joined the action in solidarity and surge pricing during protest days typically makes VTC significantly more expensive. Do not rely on VTC availability today. Book RER B instead.

✅ Paris Orly Airport (ORY) — Orlyval + RER B

Orly is not directly served by RER B. The connection requires:

Option 1 — Orlyval + RER B (RECOMMENDED)

  1. Take RER B to Antony station (from Châtelet: approximately 25 minutes)
  2. Transfer to Orlyval automated shuttle at Antony
  3. Orlyval to Orly Terminal 1 or 2: approximately 8 minutes
  4. Total journey from central Paris: approximately 35–40 minutes

Orlyval is fully automated — no drivers, no strike risk. It operates every 4–7 minutes and is completely unaffected by today’s road transport action.

Option 2 — Tram T7 + RER C Tram T7 connects Villejuif–Louis Aragon Metro station to Orly — slower than Orlyval but an alternative if there are disruptions on the RER B/Antony connection.

Option 3 — Orlybus The Orlybus connects Denfert-Rochereau to Orly by road. Road-based — potentially affected by protest activity today. Use Orlyval in preference.

✅ CDG and Orly by Private Car or Self-Drive

If you are driving to the airport today — here are the road disruption risk zones to avoid:

Road Normal use Today’s risk
A1 motorway (CDG bound) Standard airport route 🔴 HIGH — Yellow Vest convoy risk
A6a/A6b (Orly bound) Standard airport route 🔴 HIGH — convoy activity reported
Boulevard Périphérique Ring road alternative 🔴 MEDIUM — protest-related congestion
A3 / A86 Eastern suburbs access 🔴 MEDIUM — alert zone

If driving, allow a MINIMUM of 2.5 hours from central Paris to CDG or Orly today — double the normal journey time on a typical Saturday morning. Leave 3 hours if your flight is before noon.

⏰ PART 5: What Time to Leave — Specific Guidance by Flight Time

Half-term Saturday departures cluster in three waves. Here is your specific leaving-time guide for today:

Your flight departs Recommended leave time (RER B) Recommended leave time (car)
Before 9:00am Leave hotel by 6:00am Leave hotel by 5:30am
9:00am – 12:00pm Leave hotel by 7:00am Leave hotel by 6:30am
12:00pm – 3:00pm Leave hotel by 9:30am Leave hotel by 9:00am
3:00pm – 6:00pm Leave hotel by 12:30pm Leave hotel by 12:00pm
After 6:00pm Leave hotel by 3:00pm Leave hotel by 2:30pm

These times include an additional 30-minute buffer for increased platform crowding on RER B and 60-minute buffer for road congestion. They assume you have already checked in online and have your boarding pass on your phone.

🌍 PART 6: Market-by-Market Guide

🇬🇧 UK Travellers — Most Affected

UK families flying from Paris to the UK today — or arriving in Paris and connecting onwards — are the most directly affected readership. Most UK charter and scheduled flights from Paris CDG and Orly depart in the morning and evening banks, both of which fall during peak protest activity.

If you are at a Paris hotel right now and your flight is this morning: leave immediately for the nearest RER B station. Do not wait for a taxi or open a ride-hailing app. Every minute you spend waiting for road transport increases your risk of missing your flight.

If your flight is this afternoon or evening: take the RER B to the airport at least 3 hours before your departure time today. Arrive at the check-in area with 2.5 hours to spare.

Under UK261: If you miss your flight because road transport disruption prevented you from reaching the airport — your rights are extremely limited. Airlines are not responsible for passengers’ ground transport choices. Travel insurance may cover missed flight costs if you have a “missed departure” clause. Check your policy now.

🇺🇸 US and 🇨🇦 Canadian Travellers

If you are departing Paris today on an Air France transatlantic service to the US or Canada — your flight is operating (the aviation strike is suspended). Your risk is entirely on the ground transport side. Take the RER B. Leave your hotel substantially earlier than you normally would for a Saturday morning transatlantic departure.

🇦🇺 Australian and New Zealand Travellers

Australian and NZ passengers connecting through CDG on Qantas or Air France-operated longhaul services are unaffected by the aviation strike. Ground transport risk is the same as for UK passengers — take RER B to CDG and allow extra time.

📋 PART 7: At the Airport — What to Expect When You Arrive

Even if you reach CDG or Orly on time using RER B, be prepared for:

Longer than normal check-in queues: Every UK family that was nervous about the aviation strike and arrived extra early is also checking in today. The morning wave at CDG Terminal 2 will be among the busiest of the Toussaint season.

Busier security lanes: Same reason — peak half-term Saturday plus nervous passengers who over-arrived means security lanes are longer than normal. Allow 45 minutes for security, not the usual 20–30.

Luggage reclaim at arrivals: If you are arriving into CDG or Orly today, ground-side operations are unaffected. Baggage claim and ground transport from arrivals may be slower due to taxi shortages — use the RER B for your journey into Paris city centre.

✅ PART 8: 8-Step Action Checklist — Right Now

  1. Your Air France / Transavia / Corsair flight IS operating — the aviation strike is suspended; do not change or cancel your flight based on yesterday’s concerns
  2. Do NOT try to get to CDG or Orly by taxi today — taxi strike is active; you risk being stranded without a taxi
  3. Take the RER B to CDG — fully operational, unaffected by road transport action; platform at any central Paris RER B station
  4. Take Orlyval + RER B to Orly — connect at Antony; Orlyval is automated and fully operational
  5. If driving: Allow minimum 2.5 hours from central Paris; avoid A1 (CDG) and A6 (Orly); check Waze or Google Maps in real time before leaving
  6. Leave your hotel NOW if your flight is before 11am — you are already in the risk window
  7. Check in online immediately if you have not already — remove check-in queue time entirely; have boarding pass on your phone
  8. If you miss your flight due to road disruption: Contact your airline immediately at the airport counter; check your travel insurance for “missed departure” cover
