Storm Austen Aftermath: Thousands Without Power, Fallen Trees Block Rail Lines, Ferries Cancelled — What Is Still Affected and What Comes Next

TRENDING: A DAY AFTER STORM AUSTEN CROSSED SOUTHERN BRITAIN, TENS OF THOUSANDS OF HOMES HAD LOST POWER, FALLEN TREES HAD BLOCKED RAIL LINES AND ROADS, AND PART OF BRIGHTON’S WEST PIER HAD COLLAPSED. STORM BOELO ARRIVES TONIGHT, SO CLEAN-UP AND DISRUPTION WILL OVERLAP. HERE IS WHAT TO CHECK BEFORE YOU TRAVEL.

Published: October 24, 2026

Storm Austen, the first named storm of the season, made landfall in the south-west overnight on Thursday and moved east on Friday, October 23. Most figures below are from Friday. Saturday’s live status was not confirmed when we wrote this, so check your operator before you travel.

The Wind: What Was Recorded

Location Gust
Jersey Airport 84mph, just before 6am Friday. Government of Jersey said speeds could stay at that level for two to three hours
St Mary’s Airport, Isles of Scilly 76mph (highest Met Office observation for the first half of Friday, per Travel and Tour World)
Isle of Portland, Needles Old Battery 75mph
Aberporth (south Wales) 74mph
Culdrose (Cornwall) 71mph
London Gusts of roughly 42–55mph under a yellow warning (10am–9pm)

Some outlets quoted figures above 100mph. We could not verify those against the Met Office, so we have not used them.

Power Cuts

Item Detail
Peak (ITV West Country) Just before 10:30am, National Grid reported 18,000+ homes without power across the South West, mainly around Penzance and central Cornwall. More than 6,000 were on its priority services register
Other reports 15,000+ without power (Jingletree) and 10,000+ across southern England and Wales (Newscord). Figures vary by time and source
Restored National Grid says engineers restored power to more than 60,000 properties since the storm began (Jingletree, Newscord)

If you lose power: report it free by calling 105, charge phones and power banks while you can, and check on vulnerable neighbours.

Trains

Operator / Route What was reported on Friday
Great Western Railway Speed limits between Devon and Cornwall until 1pm. Fewer trains, some early services cancelled. Long-distance services revised to connect at Plymouth
CrossCountry Plymouth–Penzance cancelled Thursday and Friday
Gunnislake–Plymouth No trains because a tree fell on the line (ITV)
Southern Fallen trees blocked lines between Haywards Heath and Three Bridges, Lewes and Brighton, Uckfield and Crowborough, and Fareham and Southampton Central (Newscord)
Thameslink, Gatwick Express, South Western Railway, Southeastern Fallen trees and debris caused cancellations, delays and alterations (Travel and Tour World)
Stansted Express line A fallen tree blocked the line between Broxbourne and Stansted Airport on Friday evening, with an update that no trains were operating on that section. The article we reviewed did not confirm any flight cancellations
National Rail Many routes at reduced speeds. Overnight track inspections can delay early weekend services

Check National Rail Enquiries and your operator today. Several lines may need inspection before full service resumes.

Roads

  • A fallen tree blocked a lane of the southbound A380 at Telegraph Hill, between Exeter and Newton Abbot.
  • Trees were uprooted in places including Stithians, Cornwall. Many trees are still in leaf after a dry spell, which increases the risk of blocked routes.
  • Devon County Council advised postponing non-essential journeys during the strongest winds.

Ferries and Flights

  • Ferries: the BBC reported some UK–France ferry services were cancelled (Newscord, Jingletree). The Scillonian III sailing from Penzance on Friday was cancelled, with passengers moved to Saturday subject to a further weather assessment. Brittany Ferries cancelled high-speed Guernsey sailings Thursday and Friday.
  • Flights: Exeter Airport warned of possible delays and cancellations. We did not find a verified list of cancelled flights at UK airports. Loganair’s waiver for Oct 23 allows free changes within 14 days.
  • Channel Islands: all schools on Jersey and Guernsey closed on Friday, and about 170 storm-related incidents had been reported on Jersey by 1pm. Flight passengers were told to contact their airlines.

Other Damage and Events

  • Brighton West Pier: part of the pier, opened in 1866 and closed to the public in 1975, collapsed into the sea (BBC reports via Newscord and Jingletree).
  • Schools: 27 schools in Cornwall closed on Friday, and some opened late.
  • Perranporth: families were evacuated from a holiday park in Cornwall on Thursday afternoon, ahead of the storm.
  • Events: Newquay’s Zombie Crawl parade was cancelled. The eat:Bideford food festival planned for Saturday October 24 will not go ahead. Dartmouth Food Festival resumed Saturday morning after Friday cancellations.

What Comes Next: Storm Boelo Tonight

Storm Boelo is a separate system. The Met Office has an amber wind warning for most of Scotland, plus Northumberland, Cumbria, County Antrim and County Londonderry, from 9pm Saturday to 9pm Sunday, with gusts up to 80mph. Scottish rail lines are closing tonight.

Clocks go back at 2am on Sunday October 25.
