The storm’s wind radius has expanded to about 320 km, covering most of Taiwan, and the impact could last nearly two days.

If You Are Connecting Through Taiwan or Okinawa

This matters for travellers from the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand who connect through Taiwan or are heading to Okinawa.

  1. Check your booking now, not at the airport. If your itinerary includes Taiwan or Okinawa on Oct 23–25, look for a waiver or rebooking option.
  2. If your airline offers a free change, move your trip rather than waiting for a cancellation.
  3. Ask whether your ticket is on one booking, which gives you stronger rebooking protection if a connection is missed.
  4. Do not travel to coastal or mountain areas in northern and eastern Taiwan during the peak.
  5. Allow extra time after the storm passes. Aircraft and crew will be out of position, and backlogs can last a day or more.

Canada advised against non-essential travel to the Ryukyu Islands, including Okinawa, on October 20 ahead of the typhoon.

Your Rights if Your Flight Is Cancelled

Rights depend on the airline, route and where you booked. Weather is generally outside an airline’s control, so fixed cash compensation usually does not apply. A refund or rerouting does.

Situation What generally applies
Any airline cancels your flight You can usually choose a refund or rebooking under the airline’s terms
UK or EU rules (UK261/EU261) These cover flights departing the UK or EU, and flights into the UK or EU on UK or EU airlines. A Taiwan–Japan flight on a Taiwanese or Japanese airline is not covered. Where covered, weather is an extraordinary circumstance, so no fixed compensation, but refund, rerouting and care apply
Canada (APPR) Applies to flights to, from and within Canada. Weather is outside the airline’s control, so refund or rebooking applies
Australia Australian Consumer Law and the airline’s conditions of carriage apply. Check your terms
ANA free-change offer Free change or refund on listed routes and dates (see above)
Travel insurance Many policies cover named storms and cancellations. Call your insurer before you rebook, and keep receipts

Practical Checklist

✓ Check your flight status the night before and again the morning of travel ✓ Screenshot your booking and any airline waiver message ✓ Keep your hotel contact details and extend your stay if needed ✓ Stock water, food and a charged phone and power bank ✓ Stay away from coasts, rivers and mountain roads during the peak ✓ Follow instructions from local authorities and your hotel ✓ Register with your embassy’s travel alert service (Smartraveller, Canada’s Registration of Canadians Abroad, US STEP, UK FCDO) ✓ Contact your travel insurer early

The biennial Keen Sword exercise began Monday with about 56,000 Japanese and US personnel plus forces from five other countries. The US military said training is being adjusted day to day for safety.
