If you’re planning a European vacation in late 2026 or beyond, there’s a new requirement you need to know about. The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) is set to launch in the last quarter of 2026, fundamentally changing how Americans enter most European countries.
Think of ETIAS as Europe’s version of the US ESTA program that foreign visitors use to enter America. It’s not a visa, but rather a pre-travel authorization that screens visitors before they board their flights.
The ETIAS is scheduled to launch sometime in the last quarter of 2026, likely September or October. However, the system won’t become mandatory immediately.
Here’s the phased rollout timeline:
Launch Date: Q4 2026 (exact date to be announced at least 6 months in advance)
6-Month Transitional Period: During the first six months after launch, Americans can enter Europe without ETIAS as long as they meet all other entry requirements. However, you’re encouraged to apply during this time.
6-Month Grace Period: In the second six months, first-time visitors since the transitional period ended can still enter without ETIAS. All other travelers must have one.
Full Enforcement: Approximately one year after launch, ETIAS becomes strictly mandatory for all eligible travelers.
This means if you’re traveling to Europe in late 2026 or early 2027, you should apply for ETIAS even though it might not yet be strictly required.
ETIAS will be required to enter 30 European countries, including all 27 EU member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. The system also covers European microstates with open borders: Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, and Vatican City.
These countries include popular US tourist destinations like France, Italy, Spain, Greece, Germany, Portugal, Netherlands, Austria, and many others.
All US citizens entering the ETIAS countries for short stays (up to 90 days within any 180-day period) will need authorization. This includes:
Children and elderly travelers are not exempt – every traveler regardless of age must have their own ETIAS authorization. However, applicants under 18 or over 70 don’t have to pay the application fee.
You don’t need ETIAS if you:
Dual citizens should use their EU passport if they have one to avoid the ETIAS requirement entirely.
Applying for ETIAS is designed to be quick and straightforward. You’ll complete the entire process online through the official ETIAS website at etias.com.
Information Required:
The application typically takes about 10 minutes to complete. You can do it from your phone, tablet, or computer.
The ETIAS fee is €20 (approximately $21-22 depending on exchange rates). This is significantly less than the initial proposed €7 fee, which was increased in July 2025.
The fee is waived for:
Payment can be made by credit card, debit card, or other electronic payment methods accepted by the system.
The vast majority of ETIAS applications – about 95% – receive approval within minutes of submission. You’ll get an email notification with your authorization.
However, some applications require additional review and can take up to 96 hours (4 days). If additional documentation is needed, processing can extend to 4 weeks.
Apply at least 2-3 weeks before your departure date to avoid last-minute complications.
Once approved, your ETIAS authorization is valid for 3 years or until your passport expires – whichever comes first.
During this validity period, you can make unlimited trips to ETIAS countries as long as each visit doesn’t exceed 90 days within any 180-day period.
If you get a new passport, you’ll need to apply for a new ETIAS since the authorization is electronically linked to your specific passport number.
ETIAS denials are expected to be rare for American travelers, but they can happen if:
If denied, you’ll receive:
You can appeal a refusal by filing a request with the EU member state that objected to your authorization.
Don’t confuse ETIAS with the Entry/Exit System (EES), which is a separate program that launched progressively starting October 12, 2025, with full implementation by April 10, 2026.
The EES requires all non-EU travelers to have their photos and fingerprints taken at border crossings. This replaces passport stamps and helps track entries and exits.
You need both:
Here’s your action plan:
Now: Be aware that ETIAS is coming. Watch for official announcements about the exact launch date.
6 Months Before Launch: The EU will announce the specific launch date.
2-3 Weeks Before Travel (Late 2026 or Beyond): Apply for ETIAS online at the official website.
At the Airport: Ensure your passport is valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from Europe.
At European Border: Be prepared to provide biometric data (fingerprints and photo) through the EES system.
ETIAS doesn’t replace existing passport requirements. Your US passport must:
ETIAS represents a shift toward more secure European borders, similar to systems already used by the US, Canada, and Australia. For American travelers, it’s one more step in the travel planning process – but a relatively simple and affordable one.
The key is knowing about it in advance and applying before your trip. Don’t show up at the airport in late 2026 expecting to enter Europe the same way you always have.
Mark your calendar for Q4 2026, watch for the official launch announcement, and plan to apply at least 2-3 weeks before your European adventure.
