American Airlines Miami Milan launch March 2026 is here. Tomorrow — Saturday, March 28 — the first aircraft departs Milan Malpensa at 14:05 local time, landing in Miami at 18:40 ET. The following day, March 29, the inaugural MIA departure lifts off at 20:00, arriving Malpensa at 11:30 the next morning. After seven years of absence — the route last operated in 2020, suspended at the pandemic’s outset — the only nonstop connection between Miami and Milan is back. Here is everything you need to know: the full schedule, the cabin product, the fare range, the connections it unlocks, and why this route matters far beyond South Florida.

American Airlines last flew Miami to Milan in 2020. The route was a casualty of the pandemic — suspended in March 2020 along with virtually every transatlantic operation American had built. Unlike some routes that came back within two years, Miami–Milan did not. For seven years, the only way to fly nonstop between South Florida and Italy’s fashion and financial capital was to drive to a different city. There was no nonstop. There was no alternative. You connected through New York, Philadelphia, or a European hub.
That gap closes tomorrow.
American is launching daily service from MIA to MXP, providing the only nonstop link connecting the two cities. The airline’s network chief Brian Znotins told The Points Guy that the decision reflects market demand — not a return to a 2019 checklist. The MIA–MXP route complements the recently launched flight from MIA to Rome Fiumicino, which took off in summer 2025.
The timing is deliberate. After New York (JFK) and Philadelphia (PHL), Miami thus becomes the third US hub from which American connects Milan directly. With Rome already operating from MIA since summer 2025, American now gives South Florida travelers direct access to both of Italy’s primary aviation gateways — something that has never existed simultaneously before.
American Airlines will offer a record 18 daily flights next summer from the US to Italy and Greece — the most of any US carrier in the history of transatlantic Italy service.

The schedule logic: The MIA 20:00 overnight departure is one of the best-designed transatlantic schedules available. You board after dinner, sleep across the Atlantic, and arrive Malpensa at 11:30 — with most of the Italian day still ahead. No need to waste a day recovering in your hotel.
The MXP 14:05 afternoon departure means you can have a full Milan morning, transfer to Malpensa by midday, and arrive Miami in time for dinner. A full day on both ends of a trip that previously required an extra travel day through a European or East Coast hub.

Before this route, a Miami-based traveller wanting to reach Milan faced three choices: drive 4 hours to JFK, fly to a European hub and connect, or accept that nonstop didn’t exist from their city. From tomorrow, South Florida’s 6.7 million residents — plus the Caribbean Basin connecting through MIA — have a direct line to Northern Italy.
Miami → Milan Malpensa → Italian reach: ✈️ Milan city centre: 40 minutes by Malpensa Express train (€13 from MXP Terminal 1) ✈️ Lake Como: 45 minutes by road — Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio reachable same afternoon as arrival ✈️ Venice: High-speed rail MXP→VCE — 2 hours 20 minutes — €30–45 — no need to fly again ✈️ Florence: High-speed rail MXP→FLR — 2 hours — €35–50 ✈️ Rome: High-speed Frecciarossa MXP→Roma Termini — 3 hours — €50–80 — or connect to AA’s existing MIA–FCO flight for a one-country two-city trip (fly into Milan, fly home from Rome or vice versa) ✈️ The Dolomites: 3 hours by road from MXP — accessible same day as arrival in a way that Rome FCO cannot match
For Italian and European travellers, MXP→MIA gives direct access to:
✈️ Miami Beach, South Beach, Wynwood, Little Havana — direct ✈️ Florida Keys — 1.5 hours south of MIA by road ✈️ Caribbean connections: MIA is American’s primary Caribbean hub — Nassau, Cancun, Havana, Bogotá, Lima all connect through MIA. An Italian traveller can now fly Milan→Miami→Havana entirely on American metal, same-day connection
This route is the only year-round nonstop service between Miami and Milan, and will be flown by a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, complementing the existing service to Rome Fiumicino.
American’s dual-Italy strategy at MIA is now complete: Rome (FCO) launched summer 2025, Milan (MXP) launches tomorrow. The carrier now serves both of Italy’s primary international gateways from the same hub — simultaneously. No other US carrier does this from Miami.
American Airlines is investing $1 billion into the larger $9 billion modernization effort underway at Miami International Airport. The centrepiece of American’s investment is the Gate D60 expansion, scheduled to break ground in 2027 and reach completion by 2030 — converting 17 new gates capable of handling larger regional and single-aisle airliners.
The new Admirals Club and Flagship Lounge at MIA — currently in development — will be ready before the D60 expansion completes. When both are operational, MIA will have the full premium infrastructure to support the transatlantic growth American is building around it.
With MXP returning to American’s Miami schedule for the first time since 2019, the airline will operate nonstop service from MIA to five transatlantic destinations next summer: Barcelona, London, Madrid, Milan, and Rome. Five transatlantic nonstops from a single hub is a significant concentration — it makes MIA one of the most internationally connected airports in the American system outside JFK and PHL.

American Airlines Miami–Milan launches tomorrow. The only nonstop between two cities that have no other direct connection. A Boeing 787-8 with lie-flat Flagship Business, 38-inch-pitch Premium Economy, and fares from $713 roundtrip. Year-round, daily, permanent — not seasonal, not limited.
For South Florida’s Italian community, for Miami’s growing base of European leisure travellers, for Caribbean passengers connecting through MIA to Europe, and for Italian and European travellers who want direct access to South Florida and the Caribbean — this route changes the calculation entirely.
Demand between Italy and Florida is constantly growing, thanks to Miami’s tourist attractiveness, its beaches — and from tomorrow, the infrastructure finally matches the demand.
Book at aa.com. The first MIA→MXP departure is Sunday, March 29 at 20:00. The first MXP→MIA arrives tomorrow evening. Seven years of waiting ends tonight.
