The Italy CSLE national multi-sector strike is active right now. The railway stoppage window runs from 11:00am to 2:00pm Italian time — and if you are in Italy today with a midday train connection, an airport transfer, or an afternoon departure from Milan Malpensa, this is your live guide to what is and is not running.
The national general strike called by trade unions CSLE and FI-SI is underway across Italy on Friday October 2, 2026. For rail travellers, the active disruption window is bounded: trains stop at 11:00am and services resume at 2:00pm. Outside those hours, the main national rail network is operating normally.
Three specific Intercity services have been confirmed cancelled today. Malpensa Express trains between Milan and Milan Malpensa Airport are not operating during the strike window — but Trenord has confirmed replacement buses are running. Frecciarossa, Frecciargento, Frecciabianca, and most Intercity services are running as guaranteed.
Here is the complete live picture as of today.
Published: October 2, 2026 — LIVE UPDATE Strike type: National multi-sector — CSLE + FI-SI unions Railway strike window: 11:00–14:00 Italian time (10:00–13:00 UTC / 11:00–15:00 BST) Maritime sector: Also affected — hours unspecified Local public transport: NOT included in this strike proclamation Guarantee rule: Trains departed by 10:00am with arrival by 11:00am are completing journeys Confirmed cancelled services: IC 736 · IC 723 · IC 558 (see below) Frecciarossa / Frecciargento / Frecciabianca: ✅ Running regularly Regional trains: ✅ Running outside 11:00–14:00 window Intercity / Intercity Notte / Eurocity: ✅ Mostly running — three specific IC cancellations confirmed Malpensa Express: ⚠️ Disrupted 11:00–14:00 → replacement buses active Replacement bus route: Milan Cadorna (via Paleocapa 1) → Malpensa T1 (no intermediate stops) Confirmed by: Rail Europe (Trenitalia data) · Deep Arrival · Strike Tracker · Sondrio Today (Italian) · Telepass Moveo · Your own advance article
All trains that departed before 10:00am and are scheduled to arrive at their final destination before 11:00am are completing their journeys. If you boarded a morning Frecciarossa from Rome, a Frecciargento from Venice, or any regional train departing before the 10:00am cut-off, your service is protected.
This is the live disruption period. Rail staff called out by CSLE are not working. The following is confirmed:
What is STOPPED:
What is RUNNING:
Normal rail services resume at 2:00pm. However, allow 15–20 minutes of recovery buffer — trains that were disrupted during the 11:00–14:00 window may take a short time to return to their scheduled positions before services fully normalise.
Trenitalia has confirmed three specific Intercity service cancellations for today:
| Service | Route | Departure | Cancellation |
|---|---|---|---|
| IC 736 | Palermo Centrale → Messina Centrale | Dep. 06:58 | ❌ Cancelled today |
| IC 723 | Roma Termini → Palermo Centrale | Dep. 07:28 | ❌ Cancelled today |
| IC 558 | Bari Centrale → Villa San Giovanni | Dep. 07:28 | ❌ Cancelled today |
All three services operate in southern Italy — Sicily and the southern mainland corridor. These are the only three nationally confirmed cancellations published by Rail Europe/Trenitalia as of this update.
Important: Additional regional and Trenord services across Lombardy are also disrupted within the 11:00–14:00 window but are not listed individually. For Lombardy-specific services, check trenitalia.com or trenord.it for the full affected list.
The Malpensa Express is the direct rail connection between central Milan and Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP). It is used by thousands of travellers daily — particularly UK, Australian, US, and Canadian passengers connecting from city-centre hotels and the main Milan rail hubs (Milan Cadorna and Milan Centrale) to their international departures.
During the 11:00–14:00 strike window, the Malpensa Express is not running as scheduled.
But replacement buses are operating. Trenord confirmed replacement bus services for today:
Route 1 — Milan Cadorna → Malpensa Airport Terminal 1 Buses depart from: via Paleocapa 1, Milan (adjacent to Cadorna station) Stops: Non-stop to Malpensa T1 Frequency: Replacing the train timetable — approximately every 30 minutes
Route 2 — Stabio → Malpensa Airport Terminal 1 For passengers arriving on the cross-border S50 service from Switzerland into Stabio.
Journey time comparison:
The critical implication: If you are taking the replacement bus to Malpensa Terminal 1 during the strike window, allow at least 90 minutes from Milan Cadorna to your departure gate — the extra 15–25 minutes journey time plus check-in means the tight margins that work for the express train do not apply.
Malpensa Terminal 2 note: If you are flying with Ryanair from Malpensa Terminal 2, note that the Malpensa Express normally continues from T1 to T2. The replacement buses serve T1 only. From T1, take the free shuttle bus to T2 — add approximately 15 minutes to your overall journey time.
Milan is the most affected city today. Trenord operates the majority of Lombardy’s commuter and regional rail network from Milan’s three major stations (Centrale, Cadorna, Porta Garibaldi). During the 11:00–14:00 window, regional trains across Lombardy are disrupted.
Long-distance travellers on Frecciarossa from Milan Centrale to Rome, Florence, Venice, or Turin: running normally throughout the day.
Milan metro, trams, and buses: The strike notice does NOT include local public transport. The Milan metro (ATM) and municipal bus services are operating normally today.
Malpensa travellers: Use replacement buses as described above or plan arrivals before 10:30am (to catch the last Malpensa Express before the strike) or after 2:30pm (when the express resumes).
Milan Linate (LIN): The Linate metro connection and bus services are unaffected by this specific strike — local public transport is not included in the CSLE proclamation.
Long-distance Frecciarossa and Frecciargento services between Rome Termini and other major cities — Florence, Milan, Naples, Turin, Venice — are running normally throughout the day.
Note: IC 723 (Roma Termini → Palermo Centrale, dep. 07:28) is confirmed cancelled today. This was a morning departure that would already have been scheduled before publication of this update.
Rome metro (Line A, B, C) and local buses: Not included in the CSLE proclamation — operating normally.
Fiumicino Airport (FCO) Leonardo Express: The Leonardo Express connecting Rome Termini to Fiumicino Airport is a Trenitalia service and may be subject to regional disruption during the 11:00–14:00 window. Check trenitalia.com for the current Fiumicino Express schedule before travelling. If uncertain, allow time for alternative transport (taxi approximately 45 minutes and €48 fixed fare, or bus services FL1 also potentially disrupted).
Venice rail connections — Frecciarossa and Frecciargento to Milan, Rome, Florence — are running normally as guaranteed services.
Regional trains between Venice Santa Lucia and Mestre, Padua, and other Veneto cities may experience disruption during the 11:00–14:00 window on Trenitalia and Trenord-operated Veneto services.
Frecciarossa and Frecciargento from Florence Santa Maria Novella to Milan, Rome, and Naples: running normally. Florence regional trains may experience disruption during the 11:00–14:00 window.
Frecciarossa and Frecciargento from Naples Centrale: running normally. IC 723 (Roma → Palermo) which stops at Naples is cancelled — check if your service is the 7:28am IC 723.
Circumvesuviana (the regional train network serving Pompeii, Sorrento, and Herculaneum): This is operated by EAV, a separate operator from Trenitalia. Check eavsrl.it for current service status.
Option 1 — Wait for the next available service after 14:00: The most straightforward option. From 14:00 onwards, normal timetables resume with a short recovery buffer. If your train between 11:00 and 14:00 was cancelled or severely delayed, the next scheduled departure after 14:00 on the same route is your fastest option.
Option 2 — Italo Treno (NTV) as an alternative: Italo Treno operates its own high-speed services on Italy’s high-speed network (Rome–Florence–Milan–Turin corridor) independently of Trenitalia. Italo confirmed guaranteed services today. If your Trenitalia Frecciarossa is disrupted, check italotreno.it for availability on the same corridor.
Option 3 — FlixBus/regional buses: For shorter inter-city journeys during the strike window, FlixBus operates Italy and may have available capacity — particularly on Rome–Naples, Florence–Bologna, and Milan–Turin corridors.
Option 4 — Taxis/rideshare for local journeys: For short intra-city or city-to-airport transfers that depend on regional trains during the strike window, taxis and rideshare (Uber, Bolt, itTaxi) are not affected by the rail strike.
Today’s Italy rail strike coincides precisely with Day 1 of the easyJet Portugal cabin crew strike (October 2–6). For UK travellers who had planned to fly easyJet from a UK airport to Portugal today, and who need Italian rail connections for any portion of their journey, the double disruption makes today one of the most complex travel days for UK visitors to Southern Europe in 2026.
Specifically: UK travellers attempting to reroute from cancelled easyJet Portugal flights via Milan or Rome as alternative connections face both the Italian rail disruption and the Portuguese strike simultaneously. If you are in Italy today and had an easyJet Portugal connection:
Today’s CSLE action is the first of multiple Italian transport disruptions in October 2026. Your site has published the complete October Italian strike calendar — here is the summary:
| Date | Strike | Impact |
|---|---|---|
| Oct 2 (TODAY) | CSLE national multi-sector | Rail 11:00–14:00 · maritime |
| Oct 3 | Genoa AMT buses/metro (CUB, 24hr) | Genoa local transport |
| Oct 9 (next Thursday) | Milan metro + flights (ENAV-linked) | Milan metro · selected flights |
| Oct 16 | easyJet Italy (24hr) + ENAV ATC | Flights from Italian airports — EU261 applies |
| Oct 30 | National general strike (CGIL/UIL) | Rail · flights · major disruption nationwide |
October 30 is the one to watch. CGIL and UIL — Italy’s two largest unions — have called a full national general strike on October 30. This will be significantly larger in scope than today’s CSLE action, affecting Trenitalia, Italo, Trenord, ENAV, ITA Airways, and ground handlers simultaneously.
