Summer 2026 has brought more simultaneous visa and entry-rule changes than travelers have faced in years, and several of them carry real consequences if you miss the fine print — denied boarding, an unexpected fee, or a form you didn’t know you needed to file before departure. From the UK’s now fully-enforced Electronic Travel Authorisation to Vietnam’s brand-new mandatory health declaration and Japan’s first visa fee increase since 1978, this is a genuinely global moment of border-rule change. Here’s a complete rundown of the ten most consequential updates, organized by destination, so you can check your own itinerary against what’s actually changed.
Since February 25, 2026, the UK’s Electronic Travel Authorisation has moved from a soft rollout to strict enforcement: airlines, ferry operators and rail companies including Eurostar must verify ETA status before allowing boarding. Citizens of 85 visa-exempt countries — including the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand — now need an approved ETA before traveling to the UK, whether for a weekend trip or a Heathrow transit that passes through UK border control.
The ETA fee rose from £16 to £20 on April 8, 2026. The authorization remains valid for two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first, and covers multiple visits for stays of up to six months.
Also effective February 25, 2026: dual citizens of the UK or Ireland can no longer enter the UK using a foreign passport with an ETA, even if that ETA was already approved. This rule has caught a significant number of travelers off guard — particularly Australians who don’t realize they qualify as UK or Irish citizens through birth or parentage. Affected travelers must use a valid UK or Irish passport, or a Certificate of Entitlement, neither of which can be arranged last-minute given processing times of 6–10 weeks or longer.
Effective July 1, 2026, anyone needing a visa to enter Japan faces a significantly higher fee — the first increase to Japan’s visa pricing in nearly five decades. This affects travelers from countries without visa-waiver arrangements with Japan; US, UK, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand passport holders visiting for short tourist stays typically remain visa-exempt and are unaffected by this specific fee change.
Also effective July 1, 2026, anyone entering, leaving, or even transiting through Vietnam must submit a health declaration in advance, as a precautionary measure to monitor infectious disease risks. The declaration applies to all travelers regardless of nationality or visa status, and must be completed within seven days of the travel date.
Vietnam also launched two new visa categories on July 1: the UĐ1 and UĐ2, both long-term residency options aimed at skilled foreign professionals and their families rather than short-term tourists — worth knowing if you’re considering an extended stay or relocation to Vietnam.
China has extended its visa-free entry program for citizens of more than 40 countries through December 31, 2026. The list includes major European nations, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, and Gulf countries including the UAE and Saudi Arabia — a significant window for visa-free tourism and business travel to China for eligible passport holders.
As of June 2026, the US rolled out a trial program letting business and tourist visa applicants skip the standard queue. For an additional $750 on top of the usual $185 application fee, applicants can secure an interview appointment within just 10 days of paying. The scheme runs from July 1 through December 31, 2026 at select embassies and consulates, aimed at reducing the lengthy processing waits that have affected US visa applicants globally.
The UAE has widened who qualifies for visa-on-arrival across both its 14-day and 60-day visa categories, adding six new eligible nationalities including South Africa. Dubai’s two-year property-linked residency visa has also become more accessible — sole property owners no longer face a minimum property value requirement, and rules around jointly owned properties have been relaxed.
Rounding out the list: the EU’s Entry/Exit System, which replaces the old passport stamp with biometric facial scans and fingerprints for non-EU arrivals, became fully operational on April 10, 2026. Combined with ETIAS — the EU’s separate pre-travel authorization system — expected to launch in Q4 2026, non-EU travelers to Europe are facing a genuinely new border-crossing process this year, distinct from anything in place before.
| Destination | Change | Effective Date |
|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | ETA fully enforced for 85 visa-exempt nationalities | February 25, 2026 |
| United Kingdom | Dual citizens must use UK/Irish passport, not ETA | February 25, 2026 |
| United Kingdom | ETA fee increased £16 → £20 | April 8, 2026 |
| Japan | First visa fee increase since 1978 | July 1, 2026 |
| Vietnam | Mandatory health declaration for all entrants/transits | July 1, 2026 |
| Vietnam | New UĐ1/UĐ2 long-term residency visa categories | July 1, 2026 |
| China | Visa-free entry extended for 40+ countries | Through December 31, 2026 |
| United States | $750 fast-track visa interview scheme | July 1 – December 31, 2026 |
| UAE | Expanded visa-on-arrival eligibility (+6 nationalities) | 2026 |
| European Union | EES biometric border system fully operational | April 10, 2026 |
United States: If you’re planning a UK trip, confirm your ETA status well before departure, and double-check whether you might qualify as a dual UK/Irish citizen through birth or descent — this has caught out travelers who assumed their US passport alone was sufficient.
United Kingdom: If you’re heading to Vietnam, don’t skip the new health declaration even for a short transit — it’s mandatory regardless of how brief your time in the country is.
Canada: Travelers to China should check whether their citizenship qualifies for the extended visa-free program before booking, since it could eliminate a visa application entirely for eligible trips through the end of 2026.
Australia & New Zealand: The UK dual-citizenship passport rule deserves particular attention — Australian travelers with any UK or Irish family history should verify their status well ahead of any UK trip, given processing times for the correct documentation can run 6–10 weeks or longer.
