Finnair has added Australia to its map. The airline’s new service runs daily from Helsinki to Melbourne with a stop in Bangkok in both directions. It is a one-stop service with a “short technical stop” in Bangkok, not a nonstop flight (Russian Tourism News). Total journey time is around 24 hours.

Schedule

Flight Route Departs Arrives
AY145 Helsinki → Bangkok → Melbourne Helsinki just after midnight Bangkok 4:30pm; Melbourne 7:15am the following day (Melbourne Airport)
AY146 Melbourne → Bangkok → Helsinki Melbourne 3:40pm Bangkok 8:50pm; Helsinki 6:05am next day
  • Aircraft: Airbus A350 (A350-900).
  • Frequency: daily, starting Sunday October 25, 2026.
  • Bangkok connection: about 105 minutes in transit, per Business Traveller. Bangkok departures are reported at 6:15pm (to Melbourne) and 10:30pm (to Helsinki).
  • Times may change. One source (Business Traveller) lists the Melbourne arrival as 6:15am, while Melbourne Airport’s times give 7:15am. Confirm your exact times on your booking.

Fares and Points

  • Cash: Helsinki–Melbourne return fares from around €1,100 on selected dates, per Finnair’s booking pages quoted by Russian Tourism News. Prices vary by date and cabin.
  • Bangkok–Melbourne can be sold as a separate sector. Mainly Miles and One Mile at a Time describe it as a “fifth freedom” route on Bangkok–Melbourne.
  • Booking options: Melbourne–Bangkok only, Bangkok–Helsinki only, Melbourne–Helsinki, or multi-city with a stopover.

Qantas Points (per Point Hacks, fees and taxes extra):

Cabin Melbourne–Bangkok Bangkok–Helsinki Melbourne–Helsinki
Economy 34,700 43,500 70,700
Premium Economy 70,800 85,000 130,800
Business 90,000 108,000 167,000
  • Avios: Melbourne pricing was not yet released. Helsinki–Bangkok costs 30,000 (Economy), 43,500 (Premium Economy) or 62,500 (Business) Avios, plus fees. A Helsinki–Bangkok reward seat costs about €36 in fees and taxes.
  • Booking Melbourne–Helsinki as one reward is better value than two separate legs with a stopover over 24 hours.
  • Finnair has historically released at least two Business seats per flight to oneworld partners well in advance. Availability is not guaranteed.

Who It Suits

Australians heading to Europe: an alternative to Gulf hubs. Dubai and Abu Dhabi are operating, but with some cancellations on Saudi routes. Finnair’s route avoids the Gulf entirely. It does not remove all disruption risk, so check your airline’s status.

Travellers from the UK and Europe: Helsinki is a hub with connections across Europe. Check Finnair’s connections from your departure city and whether they can be booked on one ticket.

Points collectors: Finnair is a oneworld member, so Qantas Points, Avios and other oneworld programs can earn or redeem, subject to program rules. Oneworld Emerald members get access to Melbourne’s Qantas-operated first class lounge, per Business Traveller.

Competition: Finnair will compete with Thai Airways and Jetstar between Melbourne and Bangkok, and has a monopoly on nonstop Bangkok–Helsinki, per Business Traveller.

Before You Book: Checklist

✓ Confirm exact flight times and aircraft on finnair.com ✓ Keep onward connections on one ticket so the airline protects you if you miss a connection ✓ Check Thai entry rules if you plan a Bangkok stopover ✓ Australian entry: you need a valid visa or Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) before departure ✓ Compare total journey time and price against one-stop options via other hubs ✓ Check your points program rules before booking an award ✓ Check your travel insurance for any trip-specific exclusions

Your Rights

  • EU261 (Finnair is an EU carrier): it covers flights departing the EU, such as Helsinki–Melbourne, and flights arriving in the EU on Finnair, such as Melbourne–Helsinki or Bangkok–Helsinki. Cancellations and long delays may entitle you to a refund or rerouting, care, and in some cases compensation (€250/€400/€600 by distance), unless extraordinary circumstances apply.
  • Bangkok–Melbourne only, or Melbourne–Bangkok only: a ticket that never touches the EU is unlikely to be covered by EU261. Australian Consumer Law and the airline’s conditions apply, so check your ticket.
  • UK passengers: UK261 covers flights departing the UK and flights into the UK on UK or EU carriers. It does not apply to a Helsinki–Melbourne itinerary that never touches the UK.
  • Separate tickets: the airline is not responsible for connecting flights booked separately.
  • Insurance: check your policy for delays and missed connections.
