Air Canada’s CA$30 Phone Booking Fee: Who Pays, Who Doesn’t, and How to Avoid It

Air Canada began charging a non-refundable CA$30 fee, plus tax, per passenger on 15 October for new flights booked by phone. Booking online or in the app is free, and several groups of callers are exempt. Here is what the fee covers, what it doesn’t, and what a family of four would pay.

Key facts:
Fee: CA$30 plus applicable taxes, per passenger.
Effective: October 15, 2026.
What it applies to: New reservations completed by phone with an Air Canada agent at its Contact Centre.
Non-refundable: Yes, even if you later cancel the booking.
No fee: Booking through aircanada.com or the Air Canada app.
Exempt: Customers who need specialized care and support, including accessibility needs. Callers whose trips are affected by a delay, cancellation or other disruption.
Aeroplan: The fee still applies to Aeroplan reward bookings made through the Contact Centre. Air Canada says it has applied to reward bookings since the mid-2000s.

What You’ll Pay

The fee is charged per passenger, not per booking, and shows up as its own charge on your receipt. Taxes are extra.

Party Fee (plus tax)
One traveller CA$30
Two travellers CA$60
Family of four CA$120

What the Fee Covers

The fee applies only when you complete a new booking with an agent. Calls about an existing reservation, such as a change, a cancellation or a question, don’t attract the booking fee, although normal change or cancellation fees under your fare still apply.

Air Canada says the fee is meant to push customers toward its website and app, cut wait times and let agents focus on cases needing personal help.

Who Is Exempt

  • People with accessibility needs, and anyone needing specialized care and support.
  • Callers whose booked trip has been disrupted by a delay, cancellation or other disruption.
  • Services that can’t be completed online, according to an Air Canada spokesperson.

Not automatically waived: If your online booking attempt fails and you call, don’t assume the agent will waive the fee. Explain your situation and ask before you authorise payment.

How to Avoid It

  1. Book on aircanada.com or the app. No fee.
  2. Use a travel agency if you prefer a human. Agencies set their own fees, so check theirs.
  3. Tell the agent if you’re exempt, before you pay.
  4. Don’t pay the fee for a disrupted trip. Call about your existing booking instead.

Who Else Charges

Air Canada isn’t alone. WestJet and Flair already charge CA$25 for phone bookings. United and many low-cost carriers also charge non-refundable phone booking fees.

Who’s most affected: Commentators note that older travellers, who are more likely to book by phone, are likely to feel it most.
