Europe’s airlines are quietly shrinking their winter timetables: since early September, 21 airlines have cut planned capacity by more than 5% as high fuel prices and nervous consumers force them to fly less.
According to schedule analysts OAG, Ryanair has removed about 5.7 million seats from its published winter programme — a 7.5% cut — while Scotland’s Loganair has trimmed almost 16%, easyJet around 1.1 million seats and Spain’s Volotea roughly 9%. Other estimates put Volotea’s cut at 10–11% and say it is cancelling around 700 flights affecting nearly 100,000 passengers.
The cuts follow the Middle East conflict and the jump in jet fuel prices. Ryanair’s chief executive says his airline is flat for the winter because it makes no sense to grow while buying unhedged oil at around $170 a barrel, and has warned fares could rise 10–20% next year. For travellers, the key question is simple: is your flight affected, and what are you owed? Here is how to find out.
Published: November 3, 2026 — Tuesday Who is cutting: 21 European airlines have cut winter seat capacity by more than 5% since September 7 (OAG data to October 18) Ryanair: About 5.73 million seats removed, a 7.5% cut — the largest in absolute terms Loganair: Down 15.9%, a major cut for Scottish routes easyJet: Around 1.1 million fewer seats (2.8%), about 45 flights a day Volotea: Down roughly 9% in OAG’s data; other estimates say 10–11% from November to February, with around 700 flights cancelled affecting nearly 100,000 passengers and Bordeaux down about 35% Why: Higher jet fuel prices linked to the Middle East conflict, plus weaker consumer confidence Your rights: If your flight is cancelled you are entitled to a refund or re-routing; compensation depends on how much notice you were given Warning: More cuts are likely, according to analysts

easyJet says its cuts amount to less than 3% of capacity — about 1.1 million seats, over 8,000 a day or 45 flights — and describes them as a realignment to demand, announced early to avoid having to re-accommodate passengers later. It is also adding some capacity, including a new Southampton–Manchester route and a 3.7% rise to Finland through larger aircraft.

Route-level cuts are largest where flying was already infrequent. Examples include Naples–Luxembourg (down 61.5%, from 26 flights to 10), London Southend–Palma (down 58.7%, from 21 flights to nine), Zurich–Naples (down 58.3%) and Southend–Berlin (down 44.8%). Outside its ten biggest airports, Tangier, Strasbourg and Derry lose more than 10%.
Volotea is cutting its winter programme at the same time as it restructures its finances, and says rising fuel costs will add around €150 million to its 2026 bill. Data from analytics firm Cirium shows capacity falling by about 10–11% from November to February, with Bordeaux, Brest and Lyon among the hardest hit and Bordeaux down about 35%. Reports say around 700 flights are being cancelled between October and spring, affecting nearly 100,000 passengers, and some winter routes to Tenerife and Lanzarote have been removed.
Volotea says refunds are being paid within seven days and that claims for alternative travel costs are assessed individually. Under EU rules, airlines must offer either a refund within seven days or alternative transport when a flight is cancelled.
| Situation | What Usually Applies | What to Do |
|---|---|---|
| Airline cancels your flight | A choice between a refund and re-routing at the earliest opportunity | Use the airline’s app or email; keep your booking reference |
| You are told more than 14 days before departure | Compensation under EU261 or UK261 is generally not payable, but refund or re-routing rights apply | Ask for the option that suits you; don’t accept vouchers if you want cash |
| You are told less than 14 days before departure | Compensation may be due unless the airline offers a suitable alternative within set time limits | Check the notice date and the alternative offered |
| Flight is retimed significantly | Many airlines allow a refund or free change if the new time is much different; the threshold varies | Check the airline’s policy |
| Package holiday | Your tour operator must offer an alternative or refund | Contact the operator first |
| Travel insurance | Cover for airline schedule cuts varies and is often limited | Read the policy before relying on it |

Airlines normally lock their winter timetables well before the season, so further large cuts for November–March are less likely, but spring and summer schedules are still being finalised. Ryanair says it is putting 126 additional routes on sale for summer 2027 and expects fares to rise 10–20% next year as its fuel hedges expire. We’ll update this article as more airlines announce changes.
