Las Vegas Flash Floods: Harry Reid Airport Ground Stop Delays Flights Ahead of Halloween Weekend

Severe thunderstorms struck the Las Vegas valley on Friday, October 30, bringing hail, flash flooding and an FAA ground stop at Harry Reid International Airport (LAS). Storms dropped hail and up to an inch of rain across parts of the valley, triggering flash flood warnings from the Strip and Fremont Street to Henderson and Lake Las Vegas, and knocking out power to more than 1,600 customers. If you’re flying to, from or through Las Vegas this Halloween weekend, here’s what happened and what to check.

Key facts

  • When: Friday, October 30, 2026, from around midday.
  • Weather: A severe thunderstorm warning covered the east valley, citing reports of hail and torrential rain.
  • Flood warnings: The National Weather Service warned of life-threatening flash flooding. The affected areas included the Strip, Fremont Street, Paradise, UNLV, Allegiant Stadium and Harry Reid International Airport.
  • Airport: Harry Reid instituted a ground stop because of lightning through at least 3 p.m. An earlier report said the FAA ground stop ran until 2 p.m.
  • Delays: Staffing issues combined with the thunderstorms, and departures were delayed by an average of about 15 minutes while arrivals ran about 23 minutes behind.
  • Power: Reports ranged from more than 1,600 to more than 4,000 customers without power.
  • Rescues: Three swift-water rescues were carried out in Henderson as storms flooded roads across the valley. The Review-Journal reported one death in Henderson.

Why a ground stop for lightning?

Lightning near an airfield typically halts ramp operations, because staff working on the tarmac can’t be safely outside. That stops baggage loading, fuelling and pushback, so flights back up quickly even when the runways themselves are clear. The effect lingers after the ground stop lifts, because aircraft and crews are out of position. That is why delays continue into the afternoon and evening.

What about the Halloween weekend?

The National Weather Service said southern Nevada could see its first measurable rain on Halloween since 1987. I don’t have a confirmed Saturday airport status, so check the latest forecast and your flight before you head out.

  • Check your airline’s app for delays and gate changes.
  • Check fly.faa.gov for any active programs at LAS.
  • Leave extra time for the drive. Flooded roads and power outages can slow routes to the airport.

Staying safe in the valley

  • Turn around, don’t drive through floodwater. Local officials urged people who encounter flood water to turn back.
  • Avoid low-lying areas, washes and underpasses during storms.
  • Expect slower rideshare and taxi pickups when roads flood.
  • If you’re staying on the Strip and lose power or Wi-Fi, ask your hotel for updates and keep your phone charged.

Your rights if your flight was delayed or cancelled

Weather is outside the airline’s control, so the rules are limited.

  • Cancelled flight: You’re entitled to a full refund to your original payment method if you choose not to take the alternative offered. Ask for cash, not a credit.
  • Long delay: Under DOT’s refund rule, a significant delay (generally 3+ hours domestic) can also give you a refund right if you decide not to travel. Check your airline’s current policy.
  • Cash compensation: US rules don’t require it for weather delays.
  • Meals and hotels: Airlines’ own commitments usually cover these for delays within the airline’s control. Weather typically isn’t, though some carriers help at their discretion. Ask, and keep receipts.
  • International visitors: If you’re travelling from the UK, Canada or Australia on a US domestic leg, the same US rules apply to that leg. Check your travel insurance for weather cover.

What to do now

  1. Check your flight status and rebook if you were delayed.
  2. If your flight was cancelled, request a refund or rebooking in your airline’s app.
  3. Confirm your hotel, show and tour bookings, since some outdoor events may have been affected.
  4. Charge your devices and check road conditions before you travel.

Bottom line

A fast-moving thunderstorm brought flash flooding, hail and a lightning-related FAA ground stop to Las Vegas on Friday. Delays at Harry Reid were moderate, with departures about 15 minutes late and arrivals about 23 minutes late. Cancelled flights are refundable, but weather delays don’t carry cash compensation. Check your flight and the forecast before you travel this weekend.
