Published: February 26, 2026 ETIAS Launch: Q4 2026 (October–December 2026) — confirmed by European Commission Fee: €20 per person (≈ US$21 / CA$29 / AU$33 / £17) Valid: 3 years or until passport expiry — unlimited trips Countries Covered: 30 European countries — 29 Schengen + Cyprus Who Needs It: ALL visa-exempt travelers — US, UK, Canada, Australia, NZ, Japan + 55 more Applications Open: Q4 2026 — NOT yet accepting applications
Everything is changing for Europe travel. Starting in the last quarter of 2026, every American, British, Canadian, and Australian traveler planning a trip to France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Greece, or 25 other European countries will need a new digital travel permit before they leave home. It’s called ETIAS — the European Travel Information and Authorisation System — and it affects 1.4 billion potential travelers worldwide. If you’ve booked Europe travel for late 2026 or 2027, this guide covers everything you need to know right now.
ETIAS is not a visa. It is a pre-travel electronic authorisation — a security screening you complete online before your trip. Think of it as Europe’s version of the US ESTA or Canada’s eTA.
Under the current system, if you hold a US, UK, Canadian, or Australian passport, you simply show up at a European border and walk in — no advance application, no pre-screening. That changes with ETIAS.
ETIAS was first proposed by the European Commission in 2016 and formally established in 2018, designed for the identification of security, irregular migration, or high epidemic risks posed by visa-exempt visitors.
The EU’s reasoning is straightforward: the United States, Canada, Australia, and the UK all run similar pre-travel screening systems for foreign visitors (ESTA, eTA, ETA, ETA respectively). Europe has long been the exception — any traveler from a visa-free country could arrive with zero advance vetting. ETIAS closes that gap.
What ETIAS does NOT change:
On March 5, 2025, EU Home Affairs Ministers endorsed a revised timeline. ETIAS is expected to become operational in the last quarter of 2026. The specific date will be announced later by the European Commission.
Here is the confirmed roadmap:
October 12, 2025: EU Entry/Exit System (EES) begins progressive rollout April 10, 2026: EES fully operational at all external Schengen border crossings Q4 2026 (Oct–Dec): ETIAS launches — applications open, transitional period begins ~Q2 2027 (6 months after launch): ETIAS becomes mandatory for all eligible travelers ~Q4 2027 (12 months after launch): Full strict enforcement — no ETIAS, no boarding
Critical nuance — the 3-phase rollout:
The start of ETIAS will be followed by transitional and grace periods lasting at least 12 months. During the transitional period (first 6 months after launch), all travelers can enter without ETIAS if they meet other entry rules. During the grace period (next 6 months), first-time arrivals since the end of the transitional period can still enter without ETIAS, while repeat visitors must have ETIAS.
Bottom line timeline for travelers:
Has ETIAS been delayed before?
Yes — multiple times. ETIAS has been pushed back from originally planned launches in 2020, 2022, 2023, and 2024. However, the Q4 2026 window is now the most credible timeline ever, because the prerequisite — the EES biometric border system — has finally launched and is rolling out on schedule.
Important correction to widely circulated information: The fee is NOT €7.
The application fee for an ETIAS travel authorisation will increase to €20 from the previous €7, following an adjustment put forward by the European Commission. This increase aims to cover the operational costs of ETIAS, taking into account the rise in inflation since the previous fee was set and the increased functionalities of the system. This was confirmed on July 17, 2025.
Full cost breakdown per person:
| Currency | ETIAS Cost |
|---|---|
| Euro | €20 |
| US Dollar | ~$21 |
| Canadian Dollar | ~CA$29 |
| Australian Dollar | ~AU$33 |
| British Pound | ~£17 |
For families — a real-world example: A US family of 4 (2 adults + 2 children under 18) pays: 2 × €20 = €40 total. Children under 18 are fee-exempt but still need to apply.
Who pays ZERO — fee exemptions:
✅ Children under 18 years old (application still required, fee waived) ✅ Adults over 70 years old (application still required, fee waived) ✅ Family members of EU citizens with free-movement rights (application still required) ✅ Holders of diplomatic, service, or special passports
Validity — extraordinary value:
An ETIAS travel authorisation is valid for up to three years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. If you get a new passport, you need to get a new ETIAS travel authorisation.
For frequent Europe travelers, €20 covering unlimited trips over 3 years to 30 countries is remarkable value — compare to the US ESTA ($21 for 2 years, 1 country) or a full Schengen visa (€80+, embassy appointment required, weeks of processing).
One ETIAS application covers ALL 30 countries. ETIAS covers all 29 Schengen Area members plus Cyprus.
EU/Schengen Member States (require ETIAS):
🇦🇹 Austria | 🇧🇪 Belgium | 🇧🇬 Bulgaria | 🇭🇷 Croatia | 🇨🇾 Cyprus 🇨🇿 Czech Republic | 🇩🇰 Denmark | 🇪🇪 Estonia | 🇫🇮 Finland | 🇫🇷 France 🇩🇪 Germany | 🇬🇷 Greece | 🇭🇺 Hungary | 🇮🇸 Iceland | 🇮🇹 Italy 🇱🇻 Latvia | 🇱🇮 Liechtenstein | 🇱🇹 Lithuania | 🇱🇺 Luxembourg | 🇲🇹 Malta 🇳🇱 Netherlands | 🇳🇴 Norway | 🇵🇱 Poland | 🇵🇹 Portugal | 🇷🇴 Romania 🇸🇰 Slovakia | 🇸🇮 Slovenia | 🇪🇸 Spain | 🇸🇪 Sweden | 🇨🇭 Switzerland
Countries that do NOT require ETIAS (notable exclusions):
❌ Ireland (stays outside Schengen, keeps its own visa policy) ❌ United Kingdom (has its own UK ETA system) ❌ Turkey (separate visa requirements apply) ❌ Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, Vatican City (European microstates, exempt) ❌ Albania, Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia (separate entry systems)
59 visa-exempt countries will be affected, covering 1.4 billion potential travelers.
Key Tier 1 countries that NEED ETIAS:
✈️ United States ✈️ United Kingdom ✈️ Canada ✈️ Australia ✈️ New Zealand ✈️ Japan ✈️ South Korea ✈️ Singapore ✈️ UAE ✈️ Israel ✈️ Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Colombia ✈️ Malaysia, Hong Kong, Taiwan ✈️ Ukraine, Serbia, Georgia, Albania
Who does NOT need ETIAS:
✅ EU / Schengen passport holders ✅ Holders of valid Schengen visas or residence permits ✅ Diplomatic passport holders ✅ EU citizens’ family members with residence cards ✅ Dual nationals who hold an EU/Schengen passport — use that passport and no ETIAS needed
The application is entirely online. No embassy visit. No biometric appointment. No photos to mail.
What you will need:
📋 Valid passport (must not expire within 3 months of planned Europe departure) 💳 Credit or debit card (for €20 fee payment) 📧 Email address (approval sent here) 📱 Optional: official ETIAS mobile app (iOS / Android — launches alongside the portal)
The 5-step application process:
Step 1 — Go to the official ETIAS website Only one official portal: travel-europe.europa.eu/etias — operated by EU agency Frontex. Any other website charging for ETIAS right now is fraudulent.
Step 2 — Complete the online form (≈10 minutes) Personal information (name, date of birth, nationality, gender) Passport details (number, expiry date, issuing country) Destination within Europe Background questions covering: travel history, health conditions, criminal record, prior immigration decisions
Step 3 — Pay €20 Credit card, debit card, or online payment. Fee-exempt applicants (under 18, over 70) pay nothing but still complete the form.
Step 4 — Receive your authorisation The ETIAS system will provide all applicants notification of their approved, refused, or manual processing status within 96 hours, but most will receive notification within a few hours.
Step 5 — Travel ETIAS is linked electronically to your passport. No printout needed. Airlines check your ETIAS status at check-in — just like the UK ETA. Show up at the airport with your passport and board.
When to apply: Apply at least 72 hours before departure — most approvals arrive within minutes, but the EU advises 96 hours as a safe window. In rare cases requiring manual review, processing can take up to 30 days. Apply well before booking non-refundable hotels and flights.
This is the most misunderstood part of ETIAS. It does NOT become mandatory overnight at launch.
| Phase | Timeline | What It Means |
|---|---|---|
| Transitional Period | First 6 months after Q4 2026 launch | Applications accepted — you CAN travel without ETIAS if you meet all other entry conditions. Apply anyway — no reason not to. |
| Grace Period | Months 7–12 after launch | ETIAS required — BUT first-time visitors since transitional period started can still enter without it. Repeat visitors must have ETIAS. |
| Full Enforcement | ~12 months after launch (~Q4 2027) | No ETIAS = no boarding. Airlines deny at check-in. Zero exceptions. |
Practical advice: Apply the moment the portal opens in Q4 2026. It costs €20, takes 10 minutes, is valid for 3 years, and removes all uncertainty. There is no reason to wait.
If the UK ETA rollout this February taught travelers anything, it’s that these systems catch people off guard. Here’s how ETIAS stacks up:
| Feature | ETIAS (EU) | UK ETA | US ESTA | Canada eTA |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Launch | Q4 2026 | Active NOW (Feb 25, 2026) | Active since 2009 | Active since 2015 |
| Cost | €20 | £10 | $21 | CA$7 |
| Validity | 3 years | 2 years | 2 years | 5 years |
| Countries covered | 30 | 1 (UK only) | 1 (US only) | 1 (Canada only) |
| Processing time | Minutes (up to 96 hrs) | Minutes (up to 72 hrs) | Minutes (up to 72 hrs) | Minutes |
| Application | Online / App | App (recommended) / Online | Online only | Online only |
| Fee exemption | Under 18, over 70 | None | None | None |
| Biometrics required | No (EES handles this at border) | Selfie + passport scan | No | No |
Key difference: One ETIAS covers 30 countries. The UK ETA covers only the UK. If you’re doing a combined Europe + UK trip, you need both — they are completely separate systems.

You may have already encountered the Entry/Exit System (EES) at European airports. ETIAS and EES are two separate but linked systems that together form Europe’s new digital border.
EES (Entry/Exit System) — already rolling out since October 2025:
ETIAS — launching Q4 2026:
Together: EES knows when you arrive and leave. ETIAS cleared you before you boarded. Two layers of the same digital border system.
Refusal is rare — the EU estimates over 95% of applications are approved automatically within minutes. However, refusals do happen, and it’s important to understand your options.
Common reasons for refusal:
What happens if you’re refused:
Important: A refusal does not automatically mean you can never enter Europe. Many refusals stem from simple data errors. Correct the error, reapply, and most travelers are approved on their second attempt.
ETIAS refusal ≠ visa refusal. ETIAS and a Schengen visa are entirely separate. Being refused ETIAS does not mean you’ve been refused a Schengen visa — you can still apply for one through the normal embassy process.
If you hold dual nationality and one passport is from an EU or Schengen country, you do not need ETIAS — travel on your EU passport. Same logic as the UK ETA: use the passport that exempts you from the requirement.
All travelers from visa-exempt countries, including minors, must apply for ETIAS. No age restriction applies to the requirement. However, children under 18 are exempt from the €20 fee. A parent or guardian completes the application on their behalf.
Yes — UK nationals need ETIAS for EU travel, just as EU citizens need the UK ETA for UK travel. Post-Brexit, the reciprocal permission-free movement no longer exists in either direction. UK travelers need ETIAS for 30 EU/Schengen countries AND the UK ETA only for returning to the UK (UK ETA is required by non-UK passport holders visiting the UK). If you are a UK passport holder, ETIAS is your permit to visit Europe.
Exception: UK nationals who are beneficiaries of the EU-UK Withdrawal Agreement and hold a Withdrawal Agreement residence document issued by an EU country are exempt from ETIAS for that country and travel between ETIAS countries.
ETIAS covers business trips — meetings, conferences, trade shows — for up to 90 days. Working (being employed or paid by a European employer) still requires the appropriate work visa or permit.
If your cruise docks at a European port in a Schengen country and you go ashore — even for a few hours — you technically enter Schengen territory and will need ETIAS from Q4 2026 onward. Cruise lines will enforce this at check-in before boarding.
ETIAS authorises your visit, but it does not expand your allowable stay. The existing Schengen 90/180 rule remains exactly the same:
The rule: Maximum 90 days in any rolling 180-day period across all 30 ETIAS countries combined.
How it’s calculated: Count back 180 days from today. Total all days spent in any ETIAS country during that window. If the total is under 90 — you’re fine. If it equals 90 — you’ve used your allowance.
Why EES makes this more enforceable than before: Previously, the 90/180 rule was tracked by passport stamps, which could be inconsistent. With EES, your every entry and exit is logged digitally. Overstaying is no longer just a theoretical risk — it will generate automatic flags, fines, and potentially future travel bans and ETIAS refusals.
Frequent Europe travelers should plan carefully. If you spend summers in Europe, the 90/180 calculation matters more than ever from 2026 onward.
Any site currently claiming to process your ETIAS application is fraudulent. Do not enter your passport details or make any payment on third-party sites claiming to offer ETIAS applications before the official launch.
Dozens of websites already rank highly for ETIAS-related searches and charge $50–$150 to “process your application.” They either pocket your money or submit a fake form. ETIAS does not exist yet as an operational system.
The only legitimate sources:
✅ Official EU ETIAS portal (when live): travel-europe.europa.eu/etias ✅ Official ETIAS mobile app (when live): iOS App Store / Google Play — published by the European Union Agency for the Operational Management of Large-Scale IT Systems (eu-LISA) ✅ Fee: €20 only — no service fee, no third-party charge ✅ No action needed before Q4 2026 — the Dutch government’s official ETIAS page confirms: ETIAS will start operations in the last quarter of 2026. No action is required from travellers at this point.
Even though ETIAS applications don’t open until Q4 2026, there are steps you can take today:
✅ Check your passport expiry date Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from Europe. If it expires before mid-2028, renew now — US passports take 6–8 weeks for routine processing, longer during peak seasons.
✅ Note your 90/180-day usage Start tracking your Europe travel dates now so you understand your allowance when ETIAS launches. Apps like “Schengen Calculator” help track this.
✅ Get the UK ETA now if you have UK travel planned The UK ETA is already live and enforced — airlines are actively denying boarding. If your 2026 Europe trip includes the UK, apply immediately at gov.uk.
✅ Bookmark the official ETIAS portal travel-europe.europa.eu/etias — check here periodically for the official launch date announcement.
✅ Budget €20 per adult traveler For a family of 4 (2 adults + 2 kids): €40 total.
✅ Never apply on a third-party site No matter how official it looks. Wait for the EU announcement.

Here is the complete permissions matrix for your 2026 and 2027 Europe travel:
| Destination | US | UK | Canada | Australia |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| France, Spain, Italy, Germany | ETIAS (Q4 2026) | ETIAS (Q4 2026) | ETIAS (Q4 2026) | ETIAS (Q4 2026) |
| Greece, Portugal, Netherlands | ETIAS (Q4 2026) | ETIAS (Q4 2026) | ETIAS (Q4 2026) | ETIAS (Q4 2026) |
| Switzerland, Norway, Iceland | ETIAS (Q4 2026) | ETIAS (Q4 2026) | ETIAS (Q4 2026) | ETIAS (Q4 2026) |
| United Kingdom | UK ETA (NOW) | British passport | UK ETA (NOW) | UK ETA (NOW) |
| Ireland | Visa-free, no permit | Visa-free, no permit | Visa-free, no permit | Visa-free, no permit |
| Turkey | e-Visa required | e-Visa required | e-Visa required | e-Visa required |
| Balkans (Serbia, Albania etc.) | Mostly visa-free | Varies | Varies | Varies |
Q: Can I apply for ETIAS today? No. The system does not launch until Q4 2026. Any website currently claiming to accept ETIAS applications is fraudulent.
Q: Do I need a new ETIAS each trip? No. One ETIAS is valid for 3 years (or until your passport expires) and covers unlimited trips to all 30 countries.
Q: What if I have a criminal record? You can still apply. ETIAS may trigger additional checks or manual review, but a criminal record does not automatically mean refusal. Serious offences may result in refusal — in which case you would need to apply for a Schengen visa through an embassy.
Q: Does ETIAS cover all EU countries? All except Ireland. Ireland has opted out of both the Schengen Area and ETIAS. Currently, US, UK, Canada, and Australia travelers can enter Ireland without any advance permit.
Q: Is ETIAS the same as a Schengen visa? No. A Schengen visa is for nationals of countries that do NOT have visa-free access to Europe. ETIAS is for nationals who already have visa-free access — it is a light-touch security screening, not a visa. The process, cost, and requirements are completely different.
Q: What if ETIAS is delayed again? Possible — it has been delayed five times already. However, the Q4 2026 window is the most credible yet, as the EES prerequisite is now live and rolling out on schedule. Monitor travel-europe.europa.eu/etias for official updates.
Q: If my passport expires, does my ETIAS transfer? No. ETIAS is linked to a specific passport. If you renew your passport, you need a new ETIAS — a new €20 application tied to your new passport number.
ETIAS is coming in Q4 2026 — likely October or November. It will affect every US, UK, Canadian, Australian, and other visa-free traveler visiting France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Greece, Portugal, and 24 other European countries. The cost is €20 per adult, it takes 10 minutes to apply, and it lasts 3 years.
You cannot apply yet. But you should understand the system now, check your passport validity, be alert for the official launch announcement, and apply immediately when the portal opens. The UK ETA launched this February with almost no public awareness — millions of Americans had never heard of it until airlines started denying boarding. ETIAS will be significantly bigger. Start preparing now.
