October 16 is two days away. Approximately 200 UK easyJet flights to Rome and Milan are already cancelled. ENAV air traffic controllers are staging a four-hour nationwide stoppage from 13:00 to 17:00. Venice Marco Polo’s security staff are on a 24-hour walkout. Leeds Bradford Airport — one of easyJet’s UK bases for Italy routes — is also striking from October 16 to 18. And the day after all of this, France’s five-union aviation strike begins, putting 36,000 Air France and Transavia crew out for five days. Friday October 16 is the most disruptive single aviation day in Europe since June. This is your final action guide before it hits.

Friday October 16 is not one strike. It is four overlapping industrial actions hitting Italy’s aviation system from different directions simultaneously.
Action 1 — easyJet Cabin Crew: 24-Hour National Strike (00:00–23:59)
The main action for UK passengers is a 24-hour national strike by easyJet’s Italian cabin crew, running from midnight to midnight on October 16. The strike was called by the USB Lavoro Privato union — the private-sector arm of the Unione Sindacale di Base.
The dispute centres on the contract renewal signed on September 15. An internal consultation of easyJet’s pilots and flight attendants, run by other unions, backed the deal. USB said the results were published late and that its request to observe the vote was refused. The strike was originally scheduled for October 15 and was moved to October 16.
Why this is the most important action for UK passengers: easyJet operates extensive Italy routes from the UK — Gatwick, Bristol, Manchester, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Luton and Leeds Bradford all serve Italian destinations including Milan Malpensa, Rome Fiumicino, Naples, Venice, Bologna and Cagliari. The 24-hour nature of the strike means ALL easyJet Italy flights are at risk — morning, afternoon, and evening.
Action 2 — ENAV ATC: 13:00–17:00 Stoppage
Italy’s air navigation service provider ENAV is staging a four-hour strike from 13:00 to 17:00 Italian time. This is the same union pattern as the September 30 ENAV strike that caused ITA Airways to cancel 29% of its flights. The ENAV action affects ALL Italian airspace — meaning any flight routing over Italy to Greece, Cyprus, Malta, or Turkey may experience delays even without landing in Italy.
Strike Tracker notes a nationwide ENAV strike from 13:00 to 17:00, although not every calendar includes it, so travellers should check official updates closer to the date.
Action 3 — Venice Marco Polo Security Staff: 24 Hours
FTNnews highlights 16 October as the main date for air travellers to watch, noting that security staff at Venice Marco Polo Airport are also due to strike for 24 hours that day. A 24-hour security staff walkout at Venice means check-in, screening, and boarding processes at VCE could be severely compromised throughout October 16, affecting all airlines at Venice — not just easyJet.
Action 4 — Leeds Bradford Airport: October 16–18
Leeds Bradford Airport is also striking from October 16 to 18. This creates a true UK-both-ends disruption for easyJet’s Leeds Bradford–Italy routes: the Italian cabin crew are out, and the UK departure airport is simultaneously striking. Jet2, Ryanair, Wizz Air, and easyJet all operate from Leeds Bradford, serving Málaga, Alicante, Almería, and Italian destinations.
Approximately 200 UK easyJet flights to Rome and Milan are already cancelled for October 16. ITA Airways has confirmed that 13 direct London–Italy flights are cancelled. Together, these represent a significant proportion of the day’s UK–Italy scheduled services.
The cancellations are concentrated on:
ITA Airways’ 13 cancelled London–Italy flights add to the easyJet picture. ITA operates Heathrow–Rome and Heathrow–Milan services that are separately affected.
If you haven’t checked your October 16 easyJet Italy booking yet, do it now: easyjet.com → Manage Trips → Your booking. If your flight is already cancelled, you will see this in the booking portal. If it is still showing as “on time,” it may not yet have been formally cancelled but is still at risk of cancellation today or tomorrow.
ENAC — Italy’s Civil Aviation Authority — has published its guaranteed flight directive for October 16, revised on October 12. This legally mandates that some easyJet flights must operate regardless of the strike.
Protected departure windows (all easyJet Italy flights departing in these windows must operate):
What this means for UK passengers:
If your easyJet flight from Rome or Milan departs between 07:00 and 10:00 Italian time, or between 18:00 and 21:00 Italian time, it is legally required to operate under Italian minimum service law. Your flight may still depart even on strike day.
If your easyJet flight from Rome or Milan departs between 10:01 and 17:59, it has no legal protection and is at maximum cancellation risk.
The ENAV 13:00–17:00 complication:
Even protected easyJet flights departing in the 18:00–21:00 window may face delays caused by the ENAV ATC stoppage (13:00–17:00). ENAV controls Italian airspace, and if the ATC strike reduces capacity during the afternoon, the recovery into the evening protected window will be compressed. Build extra time into any evening October 16 connection.
For flights departing the UK to Italy:
UK-originating easyJet flights to Italy (Gatwick–Rome, Luton–Milan, etc.) are NOT directly protected by ENAC’s Italian minimum service order — ENAC only governs departures from Italian airports. However, if the Italian cabin crew who were supposed to operate the return leg are on strike, the UK outbound flight may still be cancelled because easyJet cannot staff the rotation.
Leeds Bradford Airport is simultaneously striking October 16–18, meaning Yorkshire and northern England passengers face disruption at both the UK and Italian ends of their journey on October 16.
The Leeds Bradford strike covers ground handling, check-in, and potentially security. Jet2, Ryanair, Wizz Air, and easyJet all operate from Leeds Bradford. For passengers booked on any LBA–Italy route on October 16 specifically, both legs of the day’s journey are at risk from separate but simultaneous industrial actions.

This section is the most urgently actionable content in this article. Every passenger with an October 16 easyJet Italy booking has a better chance of a free change or refund today than they will after October 16 itself.
What to do RIGHT NOW (October 14):
Step 1 — Check your booking status: easyjet.com → Manage Trips → Your booking. Look for “Flight Cancelled” or a change-fee waiver notification. easyJet has been issuing travel waivers for affected October 16 bookings — these allow you to change your flight date at no charge.
Step 2 — If a waiver has been issued: Accept the rebooking to an alternative date. The day before the strike (October 15) and the day after (October 17) are both available for rebooking, subject to seat availability.
WARNING — France strike October 17: If you rebook to October 17 expecting a clean travel day, you will fly into the France aviation strike. Air France, Transavia, and Corsair are all striking October 17–21. If your Italy–UK routing involves a French connection on October 17 or later, this matters. See our France aviation strike article.
Step 3 — If no waiver but your flight is cancelled: You are entitled to a full cash refund OR rebooking on the next available service — your choice. Request specifically: “I want a full cash refund to my original payment method, not an easyJet credit.”
Step 4 — If your flight has not yet been cancelled: You can proactively change your flight now under any issued waiver, at no fee. BUT — if you rebook yourself to an alternative before easyJet formally cancels your original flight, you may not be able to claim EU261/UK261 cash compensation for the cancelled flight. Weigh this carefully: a proactive rebook gives you certainty; waiting for cancellation gives you compensation rights.
easyJet cabin crew strike (own-employee — EU261 applies):
The easyJet Italy cabin crew strike is called by a union representing easyJet’s own directly employed Italian staff. Under the European Court of Justice’s Krüsemann v TUIfly ruling (2018), own-employee strikes do not constitute extraordinary circumstances. easyJet’s own Italian staff disputing a contract with their employer is squarely within easyJet’s sphere of responsibility.
For flights cancelled due to the easyJet cabin crew strike with less than 14 days notice:
ENAV ATC strike (third-party — contested):
The ENAV action is a third-party air navigation strike. As with the September 30 ENAV strike, airlines will invoke extraordinary circumstances for delays or cancellations directly caused by the ENAV stoppage. Cash compensation for direct ENAV-caused disruption is unlikely — but duty of care applies.
Venice Marco Polo security strike (airport staff — contested):
Airport security staff are not employed by easyJet. Their strike may be classified as extraordinary circumstances. However, if your specific cancellation results from easyJet’s inability to operate a rotation rather than from security delays at VCE, the own-employee classification is stronger.
Practical advice: File your EU261/UK261 claim and let easyJet prove extraordinary circumstances. Ask specifically: “Is my flight’s cancellation recorded as caused by easyJet’s own cabin crew strike or by a third-party action?” The answer determines your compensation eligibility.
| Distance | EU261 | UK261 |
|---|---|---|
| Under 1,500km | €250 | £220 |
| 1,500–3,500km | €400 | £350 |
| Over 3,500km | €600 | £520 |
UK–Italy routes (Gatwick–Rome ~1,800km, Manchester–Milan ~1,600km): €400 / £350 per passenger for own-employee strike cancellations with less than 14 days notice.
The most important planning context for October 16 is what follows: France’s five-union aviation strike starts the very next day.
France’s aviation strike October 17–21 covers: Air France, Transavia France, Corsair — 36,000 pilots and cabin crew — the same Toussaint school holiday week. If you are trying to rebook your cancelled October 16 Italy flight onto an October 17 or later service that routes through France, you may be walking from one disruption directly into another.
Safest rebooking strategy: Rebook to October 15 (tomorrow — one day before the Italy strike) or October 22 (after the France strike ends). October 17–21 carries significant risk for anyone with a French connection.
