Five major airlines waived change fees for this weekend’s nor’easter, but the storm is moving faster than the paperwork.
American, United, JetBlue, Delta and Southwest all issued waivers for the rare September nor’easter that hit the Northeast from Friday, September 25 through Sunday, September 27, with wind and rain forecast to linger into today. Boston Logan logged roughly 260 cancellations on Saturday and more than 300 on Sunday, about a quarter of the day’s schedule, while more than 660 LaGuardia flights, about 60%, were delayed Sunday as the FAA slowed operations for high wind.
Most waivers covered travel on September 25–27, so those original dates have now passed. What matters today is different for each airline. American’s cutoff for submitting rebooking requests was September 27. Delta’s separate Boston waiver still covers travel through September 29. JetBlue and Delta allow new travel through September 30. If your flight was cancelled and you haven’t dealt with it yet, the sections below show what you can still do.

| Delta (Boston) | Boston | Sept 26–29 | Travel by Sept 30 | Live through tomorrow |
Delta passengers through Boston are the only travelers whose waiver dates include today and tomorrow. If you’re due to fly Delta to, from or through Logan on September 28 or 29, you can change your trip without a change fee under the Boston waiver.
If a flight was cancelled by the airline, a waiver isn’t needed. You’re entitled to rebooking or a full refund. If you no longer want to travel, ask for the refund explicitly rather than accepting a credit.
If you haven’t yet rebooked after a cancellation, check your airline’s Manage Trips page today. JetBlue and Delta both allow new travel through September 30, and United through September 29. Eligibility rules, including same origin and destination and same cabin, still apply.
Cape Air passengers on North Region routes can move trips booked for September 25–28 to flights through October 2 without fees.
Airlines write waivers around forecast dates, not actual storm behavior, so a slow-moving system like this one can outlast the coverage window. The trade-off is deliberate: a narrow window keeps rebooking demand from swamping seat inventory on the days right after the storm. It also means anyone still affected today usually has to use the airline’s normal cancellation and refund rules rather than the waiver.
If the airline cancels your flight, you’re entitled to a full refund to your original form of payment if you choose not to travel, and airlines can’t force a voucher. This right doesn’t depend on any waiver.
Delays and cancellations caused by a storm are generally treated as outside the airline’s control, so the voluntary compensation some carriers offer for controllable delays is unlikely to apply here.
Airlines must get you to your destination. With five carriers affected at once, ask about partner or competing airlines if your own next flight is days away.
Get the stated cause in writing, file with the airline first, and escalate to airconsumer.dot.gov if it’s unresolved.
✅ Open your airline’s Manage Trips page and check whether your flight, refund or rebooking is still pending ✅ Confirm the cutoff on your airline’s own alert page, since terms differ and can be extended ✅ Screenshot your waiver conditions before changing anything ✅ Delta through Boston: change before your travel date under the Boston waiver ✅ Keep receipts for meals, hotels and transport if you were stranded
