The world’s largest cruise ship is about to carry paying passengers for the first time — and for once, this isn’t a disruption story.
Legend of the Seas, Royal Caribbean’s third Icon-class vessel, departs on its maiden voyage on July 11, 2026, from Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy, kicking off a summer of seven-night Western Mediterranean sailings before crossing the Atlantic in November to make Fort Lauderdale its permanent home. At 248,663 gross tons, Legend edges out its sister ships Icon of the Seas and Star of the Seas to become the largest passenger vessel afloat — carrying 5,610 guests at double occupancy, rising to as many as 7,600 at full capacity, supported by a crew of 2,350.
The ship’s maiden season was originally scheduled for August 2, 2026, but Royal Caribbean brought the launch forward to July 11 — meaning European sailings begin nearly three weeks earlier than first planned. This makes Legend of the Seas one of the biggest positive travel stories of the summer for Tier 1 audiences, especially UK and Australian travellers looking at Mediterranean itineraries and US travellers planning ahead for its Caribbean debut later this year.

Every few years, one cruise ship briefly becomes the story of the entire industry. Icon of the Seas held that title in 2024. Legend of the Seas takes it in 2026 — not by a huge margin over its Icon-class sisters, but enough to hold the “world’s largest” title for now, and with a launch strategy that’s genuinely different from its siblings: Legend is the first Icon-class ship to homeport in Europe for its debut season, rather than launching straight into the Caribbean.
That matters for readers on both sides of the Atlantic. UK and European travellers get first access to a next-generation megaship without needing to cross the ocean — Legend’s entire maiden summer is Mediterranean-based, sailing round-trip from Civitavecchia and Barcelona. US travellers, meanwhile, get a preview of what’s coming to Fort Lauderdale from November: a ship large enough to carry more passengers than some small towns, arriving with 28 dining venues — more than any ship at sea — and itinerary lengths (6-night and 8-night Caribbean sailings) that break from the seven-night-only pattern set by Icon and Star of the Seas.

Like its Icon-class sisters, Legend of the Seas is built around themed “neighborhoods” rather than a single traditional layout:
AquaDome — A glass-domed space with 220-degree ocean views housing the largest waterfall at sea. By day it’s a relaxation zone; by night it transforms into the AquaTheater, hosting high-diving and aerial shows.
Category 6 Waterpark — Billed as the largest waterpark at sea, with six record-breaking slides including Frightening Bolt, Storm Chasers, Hurricane Hunter, Storm Surge, and Pressure Drop, refreshed with a new tropical-and-bold color scheme for Legend.
Crown’s Edge — A combination skywalk, ropes course, and thrill ride suspended 154 feet above the ocean.
The Hideaway — An adults-only, beach-club-themed pool deck featuring the first suspended infinity pool at sea, tiered terraces, and a poolside bar.
Suite Neighborhood — Spans three decks with an exclusive two-level sundeck, its own pool and Jacuzzi, and suite-only dining at The Grove and the two-level Coastal Kitchen.
Surfside — The family-focused zone, with a redesigned Playscape, a new ocean-inspired carousel, and the Ultimate Family Townhouse — a three-story suite with a private slide, cinema room, and wraparound terrace with its own hot tub.
Chill Island / Thrill Island — Carried over from the Icon-class blueprint, balancing relaxation zones against adrenaline activities including the FlowRider surf simulator and an expanded Lost Dunes mini-golf course.
Central Park — An open-air green space at the heart of the ship, home to several of Legend’s specialty restaurants.
Legend of the Seas debuts two headline dining concepts alongside longtime Royal Caribbean favorites:
Legend of the Seas is the first Royal Caribbean ship to stage a full musical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, remounted from its Broadway production for the ship’s Royal Theater. It also debuts “America’s Got Talent Live on Legend of the Seas” — the first time the TV franchise has been staged at sea, featuring magicians, aerialists, and musicians drawn from the show’s alumni.
Round-trip from Civitavecchia (Rome) and Barcelona, alternating weekly departures through the summer season. Confirmed ports include:
This marks the first time an Icon-class ship has been based in Europe for its debut season — previously, both Icon of the Seas and Star of the Seas launched directly into Caribbean service.
From November 2026, Legend of the Seas repositions permanently to Port Everglades, Fort Lauderdale, offering two itinerary lengths — a departure from Icon and Star’s seven-night-only pattern:
| Icon of the Seas | Star of the Seas | Legend of the Seas | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Launched | Jan 2024 | Aug 2025 | Jul 2026 |
| Gross Tonnage | 250,800 GT | 250,800 GT | 248,663 GT* |
| Debut region | Caribbean | Caribbean | Europe |
| Caribbean itinerary length | 7 nights only | 7 nights only | 6 or 8 nights |
| LNG-powered | Yes | Yes | Yes |
*Industry reporting on exact GT figures varies slightly by source; Legend is being widely reported as marginally the largest of the three at time of publication.
For Mediterranean sailings (Summer 2026): Book directly through royalcaribbean.com or via a travel agent specializing in Mediterranean cruises. Balcony categories on Icon-class ships have historically sold out fastest for maiden and early-season sailings — book as early as possible if travelling within the first few months of service.
For Caribbean sailings (Winter 2026-27): Bookings are open now for the November 2026 Fort Lauderdale repositioning season. The 6-night and 8-night itinerary lengths are new to the Icon class, so early demand data isn’t yet available — but expect strong interest given the shorter 6-night option’s appeal for first-time megaship cruisers.
Documentation reminder: As with all international cruises, most operators — including Royal Caribbean — now recommend passport validity of at least six months beyond your return date for Mediterranean and Caribbean multi-country itineraries, to avoid immigration issues at any port of call.
