If you are in Italy today โ or flying there on Saturday June 13 โ you need to read this right now. Italy is being hit by two separate transport crises back to back. A nationwide rail strike is running as you read this, with Trenitalia, Italo and Trenord services disrupted from Rome to Milan to Naples to Venice. And in exactly 48 hours, Italy’s aviation system faces its own separate storm: an 18-hour easyJet pilot and cabin crew walkout covering every Italian route, combined with an ENAV air traffic control strike at Verona Airport. Under Italian law, easyJet must send cancellation notifications for affected June 13 flights today โ if your notification has not arrived yet, check your email, spam folder, and the easyJet app right now.
A 23-hour national rail strike began at 03:00 this morning โ Thursday, June 11, 2026 โ and runs until 02:00 on Friday, June 12. The action was called by six unions: Filt-Cgil, Fit-Cisl, Uiltrasporti, Ugl Ferrovieri, Fast Confsal and Orsa Trasporti. The dispute centres on a Ministry of Transport tender for the management of Intercity rail services, which unions say was split into three separate lots rather than a single contract, and which lacks adequate social clauses to protect workers. Unions have also raised concerns over the planned entry of French operator SNCF into the Italian rail market.
A second, overlapping eight-hour strike was originally called by the main confederal unions for the period from 09:01 to 17:00. Following an emergency meeting with the Ministry, the confederal unions agreed to suspend this portion of the action โ however, the underlying 23-hour strike by the remaining unions remains fully in force. Disruption is still expected throughout the day, particularly during the core strike window of 09:01 to 17:00 when the suspended action would have run.
The strike affects the entire Ferrovie dello Stato Group, including:
There is also a separate 24-hour SAD staff strike on the BolzanoโTrento, BolzanoโMerano, MeranoโMalles, BrenneroโBolzanoโMerano, and BrunicoโSan Candido lines running today.
Italian law guarantees a minimum service during national rail strikes. For regional and commuter trains, the protected windows are:
| Time | Status |
|---|---|
| 03:00โ06:00 | ๐ด Strike โ minimal service |
| 06:00โ09:00 | ๐ข GUARANTEED โ trains run |
| 09:01โ17:00 | ๐ด Core risk window โ significant cancellations |
| 18:00โ21:00 | ๐ข GUARANTEED โ trains run |
| 21:00โ02:00 | ๐ด Strike โ reduced service |
High-speed Frecciarossa trains (RomeโFlorenceโMilan and RomeโNaples corridors) have a separate guaranteed list published by Trenitalia. Not all high-speed services are cancelled โ Trenitalia publishes the exact guaranteed departures on its website. Check trenitalia.com under “traffic updates” before every journey today.
Italo operates its own guaranteed minimum service list, separate from Trenitalia. Check italotreno.it for today’s specific departure status.
This is the most critical practical consequence for travellers today. If you have a flight departing from an Italian airport on June 11 and you are relying on a train connection to reach it, the following are at elevated risk:
Critical rule today: Do not book a flight-to-train connection with less than four hours of buffer. A flight landing at 10:00 for a 11:15 Trenitalia departure is not a viable itinerary on June 11.
If your Trenitalia or Italo train is cancelled due to the strike, you have the following rights under Italian rail passenger regulations:
For Trenitalia refunds during strikes: visit trenitalia.com โ Customer Service โ Refunds and Tickets. Refunds due to strike cancellations are processed without the normal cancellation fee.
For Italo: visit italotreno.it โ Assistance โ Refunds.
Under Italian law, airlines are required to notify affected passengers of strike-related cancellations at least 48 hours before the strike begins. The June 13 aviation strike begins at 06:00 on Saturday, June 13. That 48-hour deadline is today, Thursday, June 11.
If you are booked on an easyJet flight to or from Italy on Saturday, June 13, you should have received โ or will receive today โ either a cancellation notification or a confirmation that your flight is within a protected operating window and will proceed.
If you have not checked your email or the easyJet app in the last 24 hours, do so now. Cancellation emails can be delayed, and the easyJet app tends to update faster than email notifications.
EasyJet pilots and cabin crew across Italy are walking out for 18 hours on Saturday, June 13, 2026, from 06:00 to 24:00. This is a national action โ it covers every easyJet route operating to or from any Italian airport. It is easyJet’s longest single-day Italy strike action of 2026.
The scale is significant. On May 11, 2026, an 8-hour easyJet Italy strike cancelled approximately 180 rotations. The June 13 strike runs for more than twice as long, covering virtually the entire operating day. The number of affected passengers will be substantially higher.
EasyJet routes from UK airports to Italy that are at risk on June 13:
| UK Airport | Italian Destination | Route |
|---|---|---|
| London Gatwick | Rome Fiumicino (FCO) | LGWโFCO |
| London Gatwick | Milan Malpensa (MXP) | LGWโMXP |
| London Gatwick | Venice Marco Polo (VCE) | LGWโVCE |
| London Gatwick | Naples (NAP) | LGWโNAP |
| London Gatwick | Catania (CTA) | LGWโCTA |
| London Luton | Rome Fiumicino (FCO) | LTNโFCO |
| London Luton | Milan Malpensa (MXP) | LTNโMXP |
| Manchester | Rome Fiumicino (FCO) | MANโFCO |

| Bristol | Rome Fiumicino (FCO) | BRSโFCO |
| Edinburgh | Rome Fiumicino (FCO) | EDIโFCO |
| Birmingham | Milan Malpensa (MXP) | BHXโMXP |
EasyJet also operates extensively on intra-European routes connecting Italian airports โ Amsterdam, Paris CDG, Berlin, Zurich, and Barcelona all have easyJet services to Italian destinations that are equally at risk.
Italian law guarantees two protected operating windows on any strike day under Law 146/1990 and ENAC regulations. Flights are guaranteed within:
| Time window | EasyJet status |
|---|---|
| 06:00โ07:00 | ๐ด Strike โ at risk |
| 07:00โ10:00 | ๐ข PROTECTED โ expected to operate |
| 10:00โ18:00 | ๐ด Strike โ expect cancellation |
| 18:00โ21:00 | ๐ข PROTECTED โ expected to operate |
| 21:00โ24:00 | ๐ด Strike โ at risk |
All times refer to Italian local time (CEST, UTC+2). If you are departing from the UK, your local departure time may fall within the protected window even if it appears to be outside it โ convert using the +1 hour difference between UK BST and Italy CEST.
Example: A London Gatwick departure at 07:45 BST arrives in Rome at approximately 11:15 CEST โ outside the protected window for arrival. But the departure itself, if it leaves Gatwick before the Italian strike area’s first affected rotation, may still operate normally. In practice, easyJet will communicate the definitive status of each flight individually.
Even within the protected slots, passengers should expect delays of 60 to 90 minutes due to congestion from aircraft repositioning and turnaround backlogs caused by other cancelled rotations on the day.
ENAV air traffic controllers at Verona Villafranca Airport (VRN) are staging a full 18-hour walkout on June 13, called by unions OSL UILT-UIL and FAST-CONFSAL-AV. Unlike the easyJet strike โ which only affects easyJet’s own flights โ an ENAV ATC strike at Verona affects every airline operating at VRN for the entire day.
Verona is the primary gateway airport for Lake Garda, Sirmione, Malcesine, Bardolino, and the surrounding Veneto region. It carries heavy UK summer holiday traffic, predominantly operated by Ryanair, Jet2, and TUI.
Airlines affected at Verona on June 13:
If you have a package holiday starting June 13 with a Verona arrival: Contact your tour operator immediately. Package holiday customers have stronger protections under the Package Travel Regulations โ your operator must offer a comparable alternative if the departure airport becomes unavailable due to a strike. The nearest alternative airport for Lake Garda is Milan Bergamo (BGY), served by Ryanair, approximately 75 minutes from the lake by road.
SOGAER, Sogaerdyn and SOGAER Security staff at CagliariโElmas Airport (CAG) are striking for 18 hours on June 13. Ground handling and security screening are simultaneously disrupted throughout the day.
Cagliari is Sardinia’s main airport. Combined with the easyJet national strike, this represents a double disruption for passengers booked on easyJet Sardinia services and for all airlines dependent on SOGAER ground handling at CAG.
Alternative for Sardinia-bound passengers: Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport (OLB) in northern Sardinia is not included in the current June 13 action and is expected to operate normally. If your travel dates are flexible and your Sardinian destination is accessible from the north of the island, an Olbia alternative should be explored with your airline or travel agent.
USB Lavoro Privato has called a 4-hour strike for Sky Service ground handling personnel at Milan Linate (LIN) from 12:00 to 16:00 on June 13. This affects check-in, baggage handling and ramp operations at Linate during the midday period. Airlines most exposed: ITA Airways domestic services, Air France, and Lufthansa regional feeder flights using LIN.
Milan Malpensa (MXP) is not included in the June 13 action and is expected to operate normally.

An easyJet pilot or cabin crew strike is classified as the airline’s own industrial action โ it is NOT an extraordinary circumstance. This is one of the most important distinctions in European aviation law and it works in your favour.
What you are entitled to if easyJet cancels your June 13 flight:
Note: If you are flying from the UK to Italy (i.e., departing a UK airport), UK261 applies. If you are flying from Italy to the UK or another EU destination (i.e., departing an EU airport), EU261 applies. Both frameworks provide identical protections for carrier strikes.
An air traffic control strike by a government agency (ENAV) IS classified as an extraordinary circumstance. This means:
Even without financial compensation, the duty of care obligation is often worth more than the cash payment โ it covers accommodation, meals, and rebooking costs that passengers who do not know their rights frequently pay out of pocket unnecessarily.
Check your policy for strike cover before assuming it applies. Policies vary significantly:
