Air Tahiti is not on strike yet, but three unions have told it to expect one from Thursday. If you’re flying between the islands this week, especially to Bora Bora or Moorea on a honeymoon or multi-island trip, you need to know what is known, what isn’t, and what you can do before Thursday.
Key facts (as of October 21, 2026): What’s filed: Three unions, CSIP, O oe to oe rima and Spencat (Air Tahiti’s cabin crew union), filed a notice of unlimited strike on Friday, October 16. Start date: The walkout is set to begin from midnight on Thursday, October 22, if no agreement is reached with management. Status: A notice isn’t a cancellation. Filing it does not mean flights will automatically be cancelled on October 22, and the scale of any disruption is not yet known. Grievances: Pay, equipment, staffing and working organisation. The unions want bonuses reviewed and better-suited equipment such as radios, waterproof torches and vehicles, and they warn of a major risk to runway safety. Scope: The action could involve the company’s headquarters at Faa’a and the airport agencies at the islands it serves. A well-supported strike would hit ground handling and cabin service at the same time. Second notice: Somstat, also at Tahiti-Faa’a airport, has a notice with the same October 22 deadline. Last strike: April 2026, by pilots.
The unions filed an unlimited strike notice, so there is no end date once it starts. It only takes effect if they don’t reach a deal with management first. French outlets report the three unions point to the toll on employees’ physical and mental health. The notice mentions pay and staffing as well as equipment.
One thing no report clarifies: French coverage says “Thursday October 22 at midnight”. It doesn’t say whether that is the start of Thursday or the end. Treat the earlier reading as the safer one, and check Air Tahiti directly.
Time zones: Tahiti is UTC−10. Midnight at the start of Thursday there is 11:00 Thursday in the UK (BST), 6:00am Thursday on the US East Coast and 9:00pm Thursday in Sydney.
Neither Air Tahiti nor the unions have said what a partial strike would look like. Planning around the worst case costs you little; being caught unprepared costs a lot.
Air Tahiti is the main inter-island carrier. It serves 48 destinations, nearly all in French Polynesia, and some islands are up to 1,600 km apart, so a flight stoppage cuts off a lot of the network.
| Traveller | Exposure |
|---|---|
| Honeymooners on Bora Bora or Moorea | High — you need an inter-island hop from Papeete. On Bora Bora, the airport is on a separate islet and a boat transfer is needed to reach the main island, which adds another dependency |
| Multi-island itineraries | High — each leg is a separate risk |
| Outer islands (Rangiroa, Tikehau, Maupiti, etc.) | High — Air Tahiti is often the only scheduled option |
| Long-haul arrivals/departures at Faa’a | Lower — Air Tahiti Nui is a separate company, the international flag carrier, but your connection to the islands is Air Tahiti’s |
| Tahiti-only stays | Low |
French Polynesia’s social climate is tense. A separate notice targets the dock-handling firms at Papeete port, with a deadline of Tuesday October 20, and La 1ère reports health-sector action as well. I couldn’t confirm whether any of this affects passenger ferries, so check your operator before relying on a boat as a backup.
Air Tahiti’s April action was a pilots’ strike. A different dispute in 2025, an airport firefighters’ strike, led to more than 80 Air Tahiti flights being cancelled before an agreement ended it. It shows how quickly inter-island services can unravel when a single ground function stops, and how quickly they can resume once a deal is signed.
EU261/UK261 don’t apply here. French Polynesia isn’t part of the EU, and inter-island flights neither depart from nor arrive in EU territory. US DOT refund rules cover flights to and from the US, not inter-island hops. Your protection comes from Air Tahiti’s conditions of carriage and local and French consumer law. I couldn’t retrieve Air Tahiti’s exact terms, so read them on airtahiti.com before you assume what a cancellation entitles you to.
If you booked a package: Ask your tour operator first. Package-travel rules in countries such as the UK and Australia generally make the organiser responsible for sorting alternative arrangements.
Travel insurance: The notice was filed publicly on October 16. Policies bought after that date commonly exclude disruption that was already foreseeable. If you were already insured, check your policy’s wording on strike cover, missed connections and travel delay.
