Violence at the October 17 protests has put curfews in place across French cities, and the UK and US governments have both updated their advice. Nobody has told travellers to stay away, and Paris’s two main airports are running. But the rules on the ground are changing nightly, and half-term visitors need to know where the restrictions apply before they go out tonight.
Key facts (as of October 21, 2026): Trigger: Protests on October 17 turned violent, and the Prime Minister’s office then introduced partial curfews for October 19 and 20 in several cities including Lille. Scale: Reports cite nearly 2,400 arrests and 60,000 police and security personnel mobilised. Paris curfew: Place de la République and the streets around Les Halles, 11pm to 6am. Airports: Paris Charles de Gaulle and Orly remain mostly unaffected; local trams, buses and metro are what has been hit. UK: The Foreign Office updated its France advice on October 20 but has not issued a “do not travel” or “essential travel only” warning. US: The Embassy in Paris issued a security alert on October 19. State Department advice for France is Level 2. Next flashpoint: Further demonstrations are expected Saturday, October 24.
Protests were called for October 17 by unions, student groups, teachers, firefighters and other workers. The day turned violent, with looting, fires and clashes. The unrest follows weeks of high-school protests over teacher shortages and poor school buildings. Cost of living is the other grievance widely cited.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez admitted police had lost control of the protests in several cities over the weekend. The government’s answer has been targeted curfews rather than a nationwide one. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said these helped keep Monday night calm, and announced a “massive” security presence for next weekend.
Curfews are local and specific. Most of Paris, and most of each city below, is not covered.
| Place | Restriction | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Paris | Curfew, two zones | Around Place de la République and Les Halles, kept “as long as necessary”. Hours: 11pm–6am |
| Paris | Gathering ban | From 8pm, unauthorised gatherings are banned near government buildings, the Champs-Élysées, train stations and other key sites. |
| Lyon | Curfew | Extended, 9pm–6am. |
| Marseille | Unaccompanied minors | In certain districts from 10pm, until October 23. |
| Bordeaux | Unaccompanied minors | Until October 26. |
| Lille, Douai, Wattignies, Denain | Unaccompanied minors | From 8pm in certain districts. France imposes nightly curfews for ‘as long as necessary’ in Paris, other major cities – France 24 +5 |
One outlet reports 12 cities under curfew in total. France 24 also names Nice among the cities in its coverage. Orders are being renewed night by night, so check the local prefecture’s notice for tonight rather than relying on yesterday’s list.
CDG and Orly are open. Neither airport was reported closed because of the protests, though the US Embassy advises verifying flight schedules and allowing extra travel time.
Getting there is the weak point. Authorities closed 25 Paris Metro and RER stations during the October 17 demonstrations. The US Embassy tells visitors to check RATP for station closures and transit disruption. I could not confirm which airport rail links, if any, are affected today, so don’t assume your usual route is running. Have a taxi or pre-booked transfer as your backup.
Attractions: Reuters reported student gatherings and blockades continuing at the Louvre Museum and Sciences Po. Check opening status before travelling to any central Paris museum.
Separate from the unrest: The Air France, Transavia and Corsair strike notice runs to 23:59 tonight (October 21). If your flight is disrupted, that may be the cause rather than the curfews, so check your airline.
| Country | Position | Where to check |
|---|---|---|
| UK | Advice updated October 20; urges travellers to check curfew restrictions, insurance details, airport transfers and security advisories. No warning against travel. | gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/france |
| US | Security alert issued October 19: avoid demonstrations, exercise caution near large crowds, confirm flights, monitor local news. Level 2 advisory unchanged | travel.state.gov |
| Canada | Check current advisory | travel.gc.ca |
| Australia | Check current advisory | smartraveller.gov.au ladbiblentd |
The UK page has been described inconsistently across outlets, so read the live gov.uk page rather than a summary, including this one.
If your flight is cancelled: You are entitled to a refund or rebooking, whatever the cause. Cash compensation under EU261/UK261 is unlikely where civil unrest is the cause, because airlines treat it as extraordinary circumstances.
If your flight operates normally: There is nothing to claim. Curfews and demonstrations on the ground aren’t an airline failure.
If you want to cancel your trip: The Foreign Office hasn’t advised against travel. Many UK policies only pay trip-cancellation claims when official advice changes, not because you feel unsafe. Read your policy’s wording on civil unrest, “disruption” and cancellation triggers. If you bought cancel-for-any-reason cover, that is the route to use.
If you’re buying insurance now: Policies generally exclude events already public at purchase, so a policy bought after October 17 is unlikely to cover cancellation because of these riots.
Hotels and rentals: Check the cancellation terms. Some properties are relaxing them for central Paris, but this is the host’s choice, not a right.
