JFK AirTrain Closes Overnight Tonight and Tomorrow: Howard Beach and Lefferts Boulevard Lines Down October 27, Jamaica to Federal Circle Down October 28 — Free Shuttle Buses Replace Trains, 10pm to 6am

AirTrain JFK is running with partial overnight closures on two consecutive nights. The Port Authority is doing essential maintenance, and free shuttle buses replace the closed sections at every affected stop. Daytime service is not affected. If you are arriving late tonight or tomorrow night, or leaving JFK before 6am on Wednesday or Thursday, read this first.

🚆 What Is Closed and When

Night Hours No AirTrain service between Replacement
Tuesday October 27 10pm to 6am Wednesday Howard Beach, Lefferts Boulevard and the airport terminals Free shuttle buses
Wednesday October 28 10pm to 6am Thursday Jamaica and Federal Circle Station Free shuttle buses

This is JFK’s own wording. JFK says different stations are affected each night, with free shuttle service “at all impacted locations.”

Some websites  summary also lists Federal Circle links to the terminals as replaced by buses on Tuesday night. The official page does not, so check the sign at your station.

The other branch is not listed as closed on either night. That means Jamaica service should run on Tuesday night, and Howard Beach service on Wednesday night. Confirm this on the station signs, because the notice can change.

🚌 Where the Buses Run

  • All replacement buses are free.
  • Buses leave from ground level, not from the elevated AirTrain platforms. Follow the temporary signs to the bus stops.
  • On earlier October closures, Jamaica rail passengers had to change buses at remote Lot 66. Reports on this week’s plan don’t say whether the same applies. Ask a Port Authority staff member at the station.

🧭 What This Means for You

  • Subway to Howard Beach (the A train): affected Tuesday night. You will take a bus from the station to the terminals.
  • LIRR or subway to Jamaica: affected Wednesday night. Buses replace the Jamaica to Federal Circle link.
  • Hotel shuttles and rental cars: JFK sends you to Federal Circle for both. On Wednesday night the Jamaica to Federal Circle link is closed, so check how you reach it.
  • Taxis, Uber, Lyft and car services: not affected. Expect busier pick-up areas than usual.
  • Daytime flights and arrivals before 10pm: not affected.
  • Early-morning departures: if you leave before 6am, you travel during the closure.
  • Late arrivals: international evening arrivals that clear immigration after 10pm will meet the replacement buses.

Extra time: budget 45 to 60 minutes more than usual. That is my estimate. Reports on earlier closures suggest 30 to 40 minutes for some transfers.

🌍 For International Travellers

If you land at JFK from London, Toronto or Sydney this week, you may arrive close to the 10pm closure. A pre-booked car or a taxi avoids the bus change entirely. UK half-term families returning this week should plan for this.

✅ Checklist

  1. Check the time you will reach the AirTrain. If it falls between 10pm and 6am, you are affected.
  2. Work out which branch you normally use: Howard Beach (Tuesday) or Jamaica (Wednesday).
  3. Allow 45 to 60 extra minutes.
  4. Follow the signs to the ground-level bus stops and ask staff to confirm the right bus.
  5. If you are travelling with heavy luggage or children, book a taxi or car service for the closure hours.
  6. Check jfkairport.com/transportation/airtrain and @JFKairport on X for changes. The Port Authority has not announced an extension, but works can be rescheduled.
