US Flight Delays Oct 28: 784 Flights Delayed Tuesday, FAA Low-Cloud Alerts at Denver, Seattle and San Diego — What to Check Before You Fly Today

TRENDING: US AIRLINES HAD 784 DELAYS AND 32 CANCELLATIONS ON TUESDAY OCT 27, A LIGHT DAY COMPARED WITH LAST WEEK’S NOR’EASTER, BUT THE FAA FLAGGED LOW CLOUDS AT THREE AIRPORTS AND HOLIDAY FARES ARE AT A DECADE HIGH. HERE IS WHAT WE KNOW AND WHAT TO CHECK BEFORE YOU FLY TODAY.

Published: October 28, 2026 | Source: FlightAware (via Scripps/AP-style reports)

Early Tuesday numbers are a partial-day snapshot and change through the day. Do not compare them directly with full-day totals.

The Data: What Tuesday Looked Like

Measure Figure
US flights delayed (within, into or out of the US) 784
US flights cancelled 32
Worldwide delays / cancellations 8,316 / 564
Time of snapshot Tuesday Oct 27, stamped 11am EDT (the report was published at 8:28am, so treat the time as approximate)
Nationwide ground stop None in effect as of Tuesday morning

For context, last week’s nor’easter produced 3,163 cancellations in a single day (our Oct 22 report). Tuesday’s numbers are far lighter.

FAA Flags: Denver, Seattle, San Diego

Airport FAA concern (Tuesday plan)
Denver (DEN) Low cloud ceilings and reduced visibility. Possible ground stop or delay program after 1200 UTC
Seattle-Tacoma (SEA) Low ceilings. Possible ground stop or delay program after 1600 UTC. Runway 16C/34C is closed through Nov 15
San Diego (SAN) Possible ground stop or delay program after 1500 UTC. The plan does not list the cause

These were contingency plans, not confirmed restrictions. The FAA warning does not mean weather caused every delay. Check fly.faa.gov for live airport status before you leave.

If you are flying through these airports today:

  • Check your flight status in your airline’s app before leaving home.
  • Allow extra time at Seattle. A closed runway reduces capacity even on clear days.
  • Ask about same-day rebooking if you have a tight connection.

Fares Are Climbing Too

Item Figure Source
Domestic airfares, August 2026 +23.4% year over year  citing the Bureau of Labor Statistics (series not named)
Thanksgiving round trip (domestic) $402 average, +31% Hopper Holiday Travel Index (Sept 30)
Christmas round trip $452 average, +23% Hopper
Hotels Thanksgiving steady at $170 a night, Christmas $197 (+18%) Hopper

Hopper’s advice: book before Halloween, avoid the Sunday after Thanksgiving (fares can exceed $600), and fly on Thanksgiving Day, Black Friday or Cyber Monday if you can. Drivers include jet fuel near double 2025 levels in mid-September, reduced capacity and Spirit Airlines’ exit (Travel Extra).

The DOT Delay-Cause Rule: Postponed

Per our Oct 23 report, a Federal Register notice moved the start of DOT’s delay-cause reporting rule from Oct 19 to Feb 1, 2027, at Airlines for America’s request. Until then, causes the rule would reclassify still count as airline-controlled in federal data. One local outlet reported Jan 1. The notice gives Feb 1, per our earlier article. Verify against the Federal Register before publishing.
