This is a travel-risk guide. Snow totals are forecasts and apply to mountains and higher terrain, not whole states.

The Big Picture

Item Detail
Storm A stronger Pacific storm arrived Tuesday night, Oct 27, with a second round moving through the Washington Cascades and northern Oregon on Wednesday Oct 28 (Men’s Journal, citing OpenSnow)
Where Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana, plus British Columbia and the Northern Rockies
Totals Up to 14 inches at favored mountain locations over about five days. Lower-elevation towns may see rain or little snow
Next From Fri Oct 30 the storm track shifts toward California and the Southwest, with more mountain snow possible in the Sierra Nevada and the Southern and Central Rockies
Eastern US Comparatively warmer and drier

Road Travel: The Biggest Risk

Washington Cascade passes

  • Timing: snow began Tuesday evening and was expected to continue into Wednesday afternoon.
  • Totals: the NWS expected about 4 to 8 inches on the passes.
  • Routes flagged: US 2, US 12 and US 20.
  • Hazards: snow-covered pavement, reduced visibility and slick surfaces, especially in heavier bursts. Winter weather advisories for the Cascades run through Thursday, with 3 to 7 inches possible as freezing levels drop to about 4,000 feet (Meteored).
  • Closures and chains: the NWS update did not set specific closures or chain requirements. Those depend on conditions, so check wsdot.com/map.

Idaho and Montana

  • Expect unsettled conditions and reduced visibility. Freezing levels near 5,500 feet on Tuesday night and Wednesday fall to about 4,000 feet by Friday, which can turn rain into snow in lower valleys and on passes (Meteored).
  • Passes can be hazardous even when nearby towns only get rain.

Alaska: Brooks Range

Item Detail
Warning NWS Winter Storm Warning for the southern slopes of the western Brooks Range and the Noatak Valley (Red Dog Mine, Noatak and Walker Lake areas). It does not cover the whole state
When 10am Tuesday to 4pm Thursday Oct 29 (Alaska time). Heaviest precipitation Tuesday and Wednesday
Snow 6 to 18 inches. The upper figure applies to the highest terrain
Wind Gusts to 35mph can lift loose snow and cut visibility on exposed roads
Rain Areas below about 800 feet may get mostly rain
Dalton Highway Called a vulnerable corridor, with long distances between services and poor visibility. The reports do not say it is closed

The NWS advises carrying food, water and a flashlight. Remote roads may have limited mobile coverage, fuel and roadside help. Check Alaska’s official road-condition service for your exact route.

Flights: What We Know

  • Smaller and regional airports are most exposed to snow, wind and low visibility. Neither Rus Tourism News report names a specific airport.
  • No verified large-scale cancellations had been reported as of the sources we read (Oct 26–28).
  • Alaska: the reports do not mention cancellations or closures. Confirm with your airline, especially for bush and small-airstrip flights.
  • Earlier this week: the FAA flagged low clouds at Denver, Seattle and San Diego on Tuesday, with Seattle’s runway 16C/34C closed through Nov 15 (see our Oct 28 delays guide).

Looking Ahead: Halloween Weekend

Meteored US (Oct 27) forecasts more weather for the West Coast and Southwest:

  • A low off the British Columbia coast is expected onshore around Saturday Oct 31.
  • An atmospheric river, possibly a Pineapple Express, may bring moisture into California and the Southwest from Friday Oct 30 through Monday Nov 2.
  • The Weather Prediction Center has a marginal-to-slight risk of excessive rainfall (flash flooding) for Friday and Saturday.
  • The Sierra Nevada may see 4 to 8 inches by early next week.
  • Parts of Colorado have already had more than 18 inches in 72 hours.

Meteored notes model uncertainty, especially for the later storm. Forecasts can change. Check the NWS for your area.

If You Are Driving: Checklist

✓ Check road conditions before you leave: wsdot.com/map (Washington), your state DOT, and Alaska’s road-condition service ✓ Check the NWS forecast for your pass or route (weather.gov) ✓ Carry traction gear, warm clothing, food, water and a flashlight ✓ Fill your tank. Fuel and services can be far apart in Alaska and the Northern Rockies ✓ Allow extra time. Slow down on bridges and overpasses, which ice first ✓ Tell someone your route and arrival time ✓ Do not rely on mobile coverage in remote areas ✓ Turn back if conditions worsen. A warning does not mean every road is closed, but it does mean dangerous conditions are possible

If You Are Flying: Checklist

✓ Check your flight status in your airline’s app before leaving for the airport ✓ Fly earlier in the day on snowy days if you can ✓ Allow extra time to reach mountain-town airports by road ✓ Ask your airline about waivers and free rebooking if the storm reaches your airport ✓ Keep receipts for meals and hotels

Your Rights (US)

Situation What generally applies
Cancelled flight You are entitled to a refund if you decline the rebooked flight (DOT rule)
Weather delay or cancellation No fixed cash compensation. Meals and hotels depend on the airline’s policy, and are less likely for weather
Rebooking Ask the airline for the next flight, and for a waiver if one is issued
Insurance Travel insurance and card benefits for weather delays vary. Keep notices and receipts
Rental cars Check the policy on snow, chains and unpaved roads, such as the Dalton Highway
