US Flights November 2: 2,426 Delays and 82 Cancellations by Midday, Miami and Southwest Lead the Disruption

Monday, November 2 was a rough day at US airports. FlightAware recorded 2,426 delays and 82 cancellations across domestic and international services at 12:52 p.m. ET. Miami led the airport table, and Southwest and American led the airline table. The picture worsened in South Florida later that afternoon, so the midday totals understate the full day.

Key facts

  • Midday snapshot (12:52 p.m. ET, November 2): 2,426 delays and 82 cancellations nationally.
  • Worst airport: Miami, with 274 delayed flights.
  • Worst airlines: Southwest (594 delays), American (487) and JetBlue (171).
  • Miami later: By afternoon, Miami was under a ground stop, and FlightAware showed 333 delays and 51 cancellations there.
  • Fort Lauderdale: FLL reported departure delays stretching beyond two hours.
  • Causes: weather around South Florida, plus fog in Seattle and surface volume in San Diego.

Why Miami was the worst

The FAA reported South Florida departure delays averaging 105 minutes because of weather spacing measures. That means aircraft were held on the ground to space arrivals and departures safely around storms. Delays then spread through the afternoon, and by 4 p.m. Miami was under a ground stop.

American Airlines accounted for 40 of Miami’s 51 cancellations and 185 of its delays, and its regional partner Envoy added 9 cancellations and 36 delays. Nearby airports weren’t spared: Fort Myers (RSW) was reporting departure delays averaging an hour and rising because of thunderstorms.

Other weather and volume delays

  • Seattle-Tacoma: Low visibility from fog prompted departure holds averaging 30 minutes.
  • San Diego: Surface volume triggered a ground delay program averaging 29 minutes.

Airlines

Airline Delays (midday)
Southwest 594
American 487
JetBlue 171
SkyWest 146
United 146
Envoy 65

Southwest typically leads delay counts on days like this because its point-to-point network flies aircraft through multiple stops in a day, so a delay at one airport can carry forward through later flights. American’s total reflects its large Miami operation.

Your rights

  • Cancelled flight: You’re entitled to a full refund to your original payment method if you choose not to take the alternative offered. Ask for cash, not a credit.
  • Long delay: Under DOT’s refund rule, a significant delay (generally 3+ hours domestic) can give you a refund right if you decide not to travel. Check your airline’s current policy.
  • Cash compensation: US rules don’t require it for weather delays or FAA ground stops.
  • Meals and hotels: Airlines’ own commitments typically cover these for delays within the airline’s control. Weather usually isn’t, though some carriers help at their discretion. Ask, and keep receipts.
  • Missed connections: If you were on a single ticket, ask your airline to rebook you at no extra cost.

What to do if you’re still affected

  1. Check your flight in your airline’s app. Aircraft and crews are often out of position the next day.
  2. Check fly.faa.gov for active ground programs at your airport.
  3. If you were cancelled, request a refund or rebooking in the app before calling.
  4. If you’re connecting through Miami, allow extra time and ask your airline about alternatives.

Bottom line

By midday on Monday, November 2, FlightAware showed 2,426 delays and 82 cancellations across US airports. Miami led with 274 delays, then went into a ground stop with 51 cancellations by afternoon. Southwest ran 594 delays, American 487 and JetBlue 171. Cancelled flights are refundable, but weather delays don’t carry cash compensation.
