Four of Türkiye’s busiest airports have simultaneously broken down today — and the timing could not be worse. This is peak summer. Antalya is the number one holiday destination for millions of UK, German and Dutch tourists. And right now, the flights are not moving.
Flight cancellations have swept across Türkiye today as 362 delays and 15 cancellations impacted Istanbul, Ankara, and Antalya, with Pegasus Airlines, Turkish Airlines, SunExpress, and AJet among the disrupted airlines. The worst-hit airports are Istanbul Airport (163 delays, 8 cancellations), Antalya Airport (89 delays, 4 cancellations), Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport (71 delays, 3 cancellations), and Ankara Esenboğa International Airport (39 delays). KITV
Total disruptions today: 377 — making this one of the most significant single-day operational failures across the Turkish aviation network this summer season. The story has received almost no coverage in English-language travel media. If you have a flight to or from Türkiye today — or in the coming days — this guide tells you exactly what is happening, who is affected, and what your rights are.

Türkiye is not a peripheral destination for European travellers. It is one of the top three summer holiday markets for the United Kingdom, Germany, and the Netherlands — consistently ranked alongside Spain and Greece as the most booked international summer destinations from British airports.
SunExpress, Jet2, easyJet, Corendon Airlines, TUI, Wizz Air UK, and Pegasus Airlines all fly direct to Antalya from the UK. The cheapest month to fly to Antalya is usually June — meaning today’s disruptions are hitting at the precise moment when passenger volumes on UK–Antalya routes are at their seasonal peak and when families are arriving for their annual summer holiday. Nomad Lawyer
For the typical UK family travelling to Antalya in June — a package holiday booked months in advance, all-inclusive hotel, children expecting a beach within hours of departure — a 4-hour delay at Manchester or a cancellation at Stansted is not an inconvenience. It is a holiday-destroying event. And today, it is happening at scale across all four of Türkiye’s busiest airports simultaneously.
Istanbul Airport is Türkiye’s primary international gateway and one of the busiest airports in Europe by passenger throughput. Istanbul Airport recorded the highest disruption levels today with 163 delays and 8 cancellations. KITV
At 171 total disruptions, Istanbul Airport accounts for 45% of today’s entire Turkish aviation chaos — making it the undisputed epicentre of the breakdown. Istanbul Airport handles routes to over 300 international destinations. Its disruptions today affect passengers travelling to and from the UK, Germany, France, the Netherlands, the US, the Gulf states, and across the entire Middle East and Asian long-haul network.
Turkish Airlines — headquartered at and dominating Istanbul Airport’s operations — is recording 124 delays and 6 cancellations system-wide today, with the bulk of these flowing through IST. When Turkish Airlines’ hub at Istanbul Airport runs in distress, the cascading effect reaches every corner of its global network.
Routes most affected at IST today: London Heathrow · London Gatwick · Manchester · Birmingham · Amsterdam · Frankfurt · Paris Charles de Gaulle · Dubai · Doha · New York JFK · Chicago O’Hare (Turkish Airlines long-haul)
What to do if your IST flight is disrupted: Check Turkish Airlines at turkishairlines.com → Manage Booking, or Pegasus at flypgs.com → My Flights. For UK flights, your airline should proactively offer rebooking options by SMS or app notification.
Antalya Airport reported 89 delays and 4 cancellations, the second-highest total among affected airports. KITV
Antalya is today’s most significant story for UK readers. Of the four airports disrupted today, Antalya has the highest concentration of UK leisure traffic. Jet2, TUI, easyJet, Wizz Air UK, and SunExpress collectively operate dozens of daily UK–Antalya services during June. These flights carry families, couples, and groups bound for the Turkish Riviera’s major resort zones: Belek, Side, Alanya, Kemer, Lara, and Kundu.
Jet2 recorded 9 delays at affected Turkish airports today. SunExpress recorded 29 delays and 2 cancellations, primarily at Antalya Airport. TUI Fly also recorded disruptions. KITV
With 93 total disruptions at AYT today — 89 delays and 4 cancellations — the airport is running at severely degraded capacity. Passengers arriving at Turkish Riviera resorts tonight will find hotels receiving guests hours late. Passengers attempting to depart Antalya this evening — homeward bound after their holiday — face the added misery of disruption at journey’s end, when they are at their most tired, least resourced, and furthest from home.
UK airports with direct Antalya services affected today: London Stansted (STN) · Manchester (MAN) · Birmingham (BHX) · London Gatwick (LGW) · Leeds Bradford (LBA) · Edinburgh (EDI) · Glasgow (GLA) · Newcastle (NCL) · Bristol (BRS) · East Midlands (EMA) · Liverpool (LPL) · Belfast International (BFS) · Bournemouth (BOH)
If your Jet2, TUI, easyJet, or Wizz Air UK flight to or from Antalya is affected today, check the relevant airline app immediately. Jet2’s customer service line for disrupted passengers: 0333 300 0042.
Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport recorded 71 delays and 3 cancellations today. Pegasus Airlines, Turkish Airlines, AJet, Kuwait Airways Corporation, and Azerbaijan Airlines accounted for most disruptions. KITV
Sabiha Gökçen is Istanbul’s second airport, located on the Asian side of the city and serving primarily Pegasus Airlines operations along with low-cost carriers across Europe and the Middle East. With 74 total disruptions, SAW is the third worst-performing airport in Türkiye today.
Pegasus Airlines — which uses SAW as its primary Istanbul base — is recording 50 delays and 1 cancellation system-wide, representing a significant proportion of its total daily operations. Pegasus serves routes from London Stansted, Berlin, Amsterdam, Paris Beauvais, and across Scandinavia to Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen, meaning today’s SAW disruptions are affecting travellers from across northern Europe.
AJet — Turkish Airlines’ low-cost subsidiary, formerly known as AnadoluJet — is recording 22 delays today, primarily on domestic Turkish routes feeding into the Sabiha Gökçen hub.

Ankara Esenboğa International Airport experienced 39 delays without any cancellations today. KITV
Ankara’s disruption is primarily domestic in character — Esenboğa handles a high volume of Turkish Airlines and Pegasus domestic services connecting the capital to Istanbul, Izmir, Antalya, and other Turkish cities. The 39 delays at ESB today are the result of upstream disruptions at Istanbul Airport cascading into domestic connection schedules.
For international travellers, Ankara is a secondary concern — but those transiting through Ankara to international connections should be aware that domestic feed delays from ESB to IST or SAW could cause missed connections onto international services.
Turkish Airlines is today’s worst-affected carrier by a significant margin — 130 total disruptions representing a severe operational breakdown for a carrier of its size and network scope.
Turkish Airlines recorded the highest number of disruptions today with 124 delays and 6 cancellations across the monitored airports. KITV
Turkish Airlines operates the world’s widest route network by destination count — serving over 340 destinations across 129 countries. When its primary Istanbul hub runs in distress, the ripple effect is global. Today’s 6 cancellations on Turkish Airlines will each displace hundreds of passengers simultaneously.

Pegasus Airlines recorded 50 delays and 1 cancellation across the affected airports today. KITV
Pegasus is Türkiye’s second-largest carrier and the primary low-cost option for budget-conscious UK, German, and Dutch travellers to Istanbul and Antalya. Based at Sabiha Gökçen, Pegasus serves London Stansted, Berlin Brandenburg, Amsterdam Schiphol, Paris Beauvais, Copenhagen, Stockholm, and Oslo with direct services.
Pegasus customer service:
SunExpress recorded 29 delays and 2 cancellations today, primarily at Antalya Airport. KITV
SunExpress is a joint venture between Turkish Airlines and Lufthansa Group, operating primarily leisure routes between Türkiye and Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Scandinavia. Its Antalya concentration makes it today’s most heavily affected carrier for German summer holiday travellers. SunExpress also operates UK routes from Birmingham and Manchester to Antalya.

Jet2 recorded 9 delays across affected Turkish airports today. KITV
Jet2 is the UK’s largest charter-style leisure carrier to Türkiye and the dominant airline on most UK–Antalya routes. Nine delays is a significant figure for a single airline on a single country in a single day. UK families booked on Jet2 to Antalya today should check the Jet2 app immediately for departure status.
Jet2 customer service:
KLM recorded 2 cancellations across affected Turkish airports today. KITV
KLM’s 2 cancellations affect Amsterdam–Istanbul services. Dutch passengers on these cancelled flights are entitled to EU261 compensation of €600 (Amsterdam departure, over 3,500km). KLM’s rebooking: klm.com → Manage My Trip.
Air Algerie recorded 2 delays and 2 cancellations across affected Turkish airports. KITV
Air Algerie’s Istanbul operations serve the significant Algerian diaspora community in Türkiye. The two cancellations will displace passengers attempting to travel between Istanbul and Algiers — a route with limited alternative options. EU261 applies if the disrupted flights departed from an EU airport.
Airlines including Lufthansa, Wizz Air UK, China Southern Airlines, TUI Fly, and Azerbaijan Airlines also experienced disruptions across Turkish airports today. KITV
This is the most important section of this article if you are a UK or European passenger affected by today’s Türkiye disruptions. The rules are clear — but airlines frequently rely on passengers not knowing them.
EU261 applies in two scenarios: first, any airline departing from an EU airport to Türkiye — this covers Turkish Airlines, Pegasus, Air France, KLM, Lufthansa and all carriers on EU departures to Istanbul, Antalya, Bodrum, Dalaman; second, EU-registered carriers departing from Türkiye back to Europe — Air France, KLM, Lufthansa, TUI Fly Netherlands, Transavia, Corendon and others. aol
UK261 applies to flights departing from UK airports to Türkiye. For example, a London Heathrow to Istanbul Airport flight is eligible under UK261, regardless of whether the operating carrier is Turkish Airlines, Pegasus, Jet2, or easyJet. Nomad Lawyer
| Your flight | Your rights |
|---|---|
| UK airport → Türkiye (any airline) | UK261 applies — up to £520 per passenger |
| EU airport → Türkiye (any airline) | EU261 applies — up to €600 per passenger |
| Türkiye → UK/EU on EU/UK carrier | UK261 / EU261 applies — up to £520/€600 |
| Türkiye → UK/EU on Turkish/Pegasus/SunExpress | SHY-Passenger (Turkish law) applies only |
| Domestic Turkish route | SHY-Passenger applies only |
| Distance | Delay at destination | EU261 | UK261 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 1,500km | 3+ hours | €250 | £220 |
| 1,500–3,500km | 3+ hours | €400 | £350 |
| Over 3,500km | 4+ hours | €600 | £520 |
UK–Antalya distance: approximately 3,500km. EU261/UK261 compensation: €400 / £350 per passenger for delays of 3+ hours at arrival — if the cause is within the airline’s control.
UK–Istanbul (IST/SAW) distance: approximately 2,800km. EU261/UK261 compensation: €400 / £350 per passenger for delays of 3+ hours.
Important: Compensation applies to the delay at your final destination, not your departure delay. A 4-hour departure delay that self-corrects in flight may not qualify. A 3-hour arrival delay that the airline caused through its own operations does qualify.
Turkish Airlines — and all carriers — must provide passengers with care and assistance if their flight is delayed at least 2 hours for flights under 1,500km, at least 3 hours for flights between 1,500km and 3,500km, or at least 4 hours for flights over 3,500km. Regardless of the reason for the delay, airlines must provide: food and drink in reasonable relation to waiting time, and free hotel accommodation when a stay of one night or more is necessary. This means:
These duty of care rights apply even for weather-caused delays and even on flights where cash compensation may not be payable. Do not accept “weather” as a reason to deny you meals and accommodation.
Turkish law — the SHY-Passenger regulation — covers flights departing from and arriving in Türkiye, as well as national flights between Turkish cities. In the event of disruption of a national flight, passengers can claim compensation of equivalent to €100 for domestic routes. For international departures from Turkish airports on Turkish carriers, SHY-Passenger provides rights broadly aligned with EU261. yahoo
If you are departing Antalya, Istanbul, or Ankara today on Turkish Airlines, Pegasus, or SunExpress — homeward bound to the UK or Europe — and your flight is cancelled or significantly delayed, SHY-Passenger gives you the right to:
To claim under SHY-Passenger: File directly with the airline. If refused, escalate to Türkiye’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (SHGM): shgm.gov.tr.
Step 1 — Document everything now. Photograph your departure board showing the delay or cancellation. Screenshot your booking confirmation. Keep all boarding passes, whether paper or digital. Note the actual arrival time at your destination — compensation is calculated on arrival delay, not departure delay.
Step 2 — Request written confirmation from the airline. At the airport, ask the airline’s ground staff for written confirmation of the delay reason. This is critical — airlines sometimes later reclassify operational delays as “extraordinary circumstances” (weather, ATC) to avoid compensation liability. Getting the reason in writing at the time of disruption significantly strengthens your claim.
Step 3 — Keep all receipts. Meals, drinks, phone calls, transport, hotel (if not provided by the airline) — everything. Under EU261/UK261, airlines must reimburse reasonable out-of-pocket expenses caused by the disruption, regardless of whether cash compensation is payable.
Step 4 — File your claim online. Most airlines have online claim portals:
Step 5 — If the airline rejects your valid claim, escalate.
Enforcement data shows the UK CAA has become more active in pursuing airline compliance since 2024. UK passengers escalate to the Civil Aviation Authority rather than an EU National Enforcement Body. Nomad Lawyer
Escalation routes by country: UK — CEDR (uk261 applies); France — DGAC; Germany — LBA/SÖP; Netherlands — ILT/Geschillencommissie. ADR decisions are binding on participating airlines. aol
Step 6 — Consider a no-win, no-fee claims service for complex or rejected claims. AirHelp (airhelp.com), AirAdvisor (airadvisor.com), Bottonline (bottonline.co.uk for UK claims), and WiseFlight (wise-flight.info) all operate on a no-win, no-fee basis and take a percentage of successful claims — typically 25–35%.
The key trend in 2026 is faster resolution. More passengers are filing through claims services, and more airlines are settling valid claims earlier to avoid regulatory scrutiny. Nomad Lawyer
Today’s 377-disruption day is not occurring in a vacuum. Turkey’s aviation network has been under structural stress throughout the first half of 2026 for several compounding reasons.
Reason 1 — Record summer demand. Türkiye’s tourism industry has been on a record-breaking trajectory. The country received 56 million international visitors in 2024 — a national record — and 2026 summer bookings have been tracking above that figure since January. The combination of competitive pricing, the weakness of the Turkish lira against sterling and the euro, and the popularity of all-inclusive beach resorts on the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts has driven UK and European booking volumes to multi-year highs.
Reason 2 — Istanbul Airport’s hub ambitions vs operational reality. Istanbul Airport was designed to eventually become the world’s largest aviation hub, with an ultimate capacity of 200 million passengers per year. Its current operational throughput — while impressive — is straining ground handling, taxiway capacity, and terminal processing systems during peak summer periods.
Reason 3 — Fleet and crew pressures at Turkish Airlines and Pegasus. Turkish Airlines recorded an on-time percentage of 82.25% in May 2024, placing it seventh in Europe — meaning almost 20% of flights arrived late in a single month. In 2026, with higher demand and continuing global pilot and engineer shortages, that on-time performance has faced further pressure. Nomad Lawyer
Reason 4 — Fuel cost pressures. Jet fuel prices climbed from about $99 per barrel at the end of February to as high as $209 a barrel at the beginning of April, and although a ceasefire has held, airlines have not yet fully unwound their summer route adjustments. Higher fuel costs are squeezing airline operational margins — and when margins are thin, airlines have less financial capacity to absorb disruption through measures like spare aircraft positioning.
