Two separate problems are hitting Italy this week. A truckers’ protest over diesel prices has disrupted fuel supplies in the south, including at two airports. And the October 29–30 strikes are real but not the nationwide transport shutdown some reports suggest. If you’re in Italy now or flying in the next week, here is what is confirmed.
Key facts (as of October 23, 2026): Truckers’ protest: Began October 16 over high diesel prices and has spread across southern Italy. Airports: Crotone and Reggio Calabria ran out of aircraft fuel, according to a notice from air-navigation authority ENAV. Lamezia Terme, Calabria’s main airport, is operating normally. Flights: Airport officials say scheduled flights are not expected to be affected. Naples area: The regional operator EAV cut bus services from October 21 and warned that metro and rail could be disrupted from October 24. Ferries to Ischia and Procida are at risk. How long: In Calabria and Campania, stoppages are expected to continue at least until a meeting on October 27. Bologna airport strike: October 29, 12:00–16:00. October 30: USB general strike, with transport contested. Pisa and Florence airports have a separate 24-hour strike.
Truckers’ protests against high diesel prices began at midnight on October 16 in Calabria and spread to Campania, Puglia and Sicily. Diesel averages around €2.25 a litre. The protests have emptied supermarket shelves in parts of the south, with petrol stations also reported running dry in places. The government has warned of criminal penalties for drivers blocking roads. Puglia’s partial blockades have been lifted. Sicily’s protest was suspended, though Gela remained defiant. In Calabria and Campania the action is expected to continue at least until a meeting on October 27.
Crotone and Reggio Calabria airports ran out of Jet A-1 after road blockades interrupted fuel deliveries. ENAV notices told flight crews to carry enough fuel to avoid depending on refuelling there. Lamezia Terme has reported no problems. Airport officials say scheduled flights are not expected to be affected, but I couldn’t find confirmation that normal refuelling was fully restored.
If you’re flying to or from Crotone or Reggio: Check your flight with the airline before leaving for the airport. A fuel shortage could cause diversions or cancellations if airlines can’t plan around it.
This is the part most likely to catch tourists.
If you’re staying on the Sorrento peninsula, Capri, Ischia or Procida: Don’t assume buses and ferries will run. Pre-book taxis for airport and port journeys, allow extra time, and check operators’ notices each morning.
If you’ve hired a car in the south: Fill the tank whenever you can, as some petrol stations have been short of fuel.
Thursday, October 29
Friday, October 30
What is not confirmed: I found no air traffic control (ENAV) strike on October 30. ENAV’s stoppages are listed for November 6 (13:00–17:00) and November 21–22.
Planning advice: Treat rail on the evening of October 29 and all of October 30 as at risk, and Pisa and Florence flights on October 30 as at risk. Expect flights elsewhere to run unless your airline says otherwise, and check Italy’s transport ministry strike register in the days before.
Flights from Italy are covered by EU261 whichever airline you fly, and UK261 applies to UK carriers on UK-bound flights.
| Cause | What you can claim |
|---|---|
| Airport ground-handling strike (Bologna, Pisa, Florence) | Refund or rebooking and care (meals, hotel). Cash compensation is unlikely, because airlines treat third-party strikes as extraordinary circumstances |
| Airline’s own staff strike | Cash compensation can apply |
| Fuel shortage at the airport | Refund or rebooking and care. Airlines will likely argue it’s outside their control |
| Train strike | Check the operator’s refund rules |
Don’t cancel yourself. If you cancel before the airline does, you may forfeit your rights. Wait for the airline’s notice, then claim.
Insurance: The strikes were announced weeks ago, so policies bought recently may exclude them. Check wording on strikes and missed connections.
