Air Tahiti Strike Due Thursday Morning: Airline Keeping Its Schedule, Cancellations Possible Up to an Hour Before Departure, Change and Refund Fees Waived — Fuel Supplier Strike Adds Risk — What Bora Bora and Moorea Travellers Should Do Now

Air Tahiti is still running its Thursday schedule, and talks with the unions were continuing on Wednesday. But a strike takes effect Thursday morning if they fail, and cancellations could be decided at the airport as little as an hour before a flight. If you’re flying inter-island today or tomorrow, here is what Air Tahiti has told passengers and what to do.

Key facts (as of Wednesday evening, October 21, Tahiti time):
Status: Air Tahiti said negotiations were continuing on Wednesday. Without an agreement, the two strike movements take effect Thursday morning, October 22.
Schedule: Air Tahiti is maintaining its Thursday flight programme and asks passengers to show up for check-in at the original times.
Cancellations: Some flights may be cancelled in the hour before departure.
Fees: Change and refund fees are waived for the duration of the strike, according to Air Tahiti. A TNTV report says this applies if the strike is by Air Tahiti’s own staff.
Who the notice covers: Cabin crew, ground agents handling domestic and international flights, team leaders and cleaning staff.
Unions: CSIP, O oe to oe rima and Spencat.
Second notice: Somstat, the company that fuels aircraft at Tahiti-Faa’a airport, had a strike notice with the same date. Reports conflict on its current status (see below).
Passenger care caveat: Air Tahiti says that if a cancellation is caused by the fuel strike, it can’t look after affected passengers, because it isn’t its doing.

What Air Tahiti Has Told Passengers

Air Tahiti issued a statement on Wednesday warning of major disruption to inter-island flights if neither dispute is settled. Its key messages:

  • Go to the airport as normal. Passengers should check in at the original times to learn the status of their flight and any arrangements.
  • Late cancellations are possible. Some flights may be cancelled in the hour before departure.
  • Fees are waived. Modification and refund fees won’t apply while the strike lasts.
  • Help on the ground. Tahiti Tourisme staff are expected to reinforce the airport to welcome, inform and assist affected passengers.

A tourism-industry source summed up the uncertainty. A notice isn’t a cancellation, and the extent of disruption has never been quantified.

The Fuel Supplier Wildcard: Somstat

The second notice is at Somstat, the company responsible for fuelling aircraft at Tahiti-Faa’a. It matters because fuel supply is a single point of failure: if aircraft can’t be refuelled, flights can’t leave, whoever’s staff are on the picket line.

Reports on its status conflict:

  • On Wednesday afternoon, La 1ère reported that talks at Somstat had failed and the strike was effective.
  • A later La 1ère headline says the Somstat strike was lifted after a protocol agreement was signed.

I couldn’t confirm the timing or whether flights are unaffected, so check Air Tahiti’s channels rather than relying on either report.

Why it matters for your rights: Air Tahiti says that if a cancellation results from the fuel strike, it won’t be able to take care of passengers, since it isn’t its fault. The CSIP union disputes that reading and argues the airline is responsible. Keep every receipt either way.

Who Is Affected

The notice goes beyond the cockpit. Cabin crew, ground agents handling domestic and international flights, team leaders and cleaners are all covered, which means a well-supported strike would hit aircraft handling on the ground and service in the cabin at once. Air Tahiti links islands up to 1,600 km apart, so a stoppage cuts off a lot of the territory quickly.

International flights: Air Tahiti Nui is a separate company, the international flag carrier, and isn’t itself on strike. But the notice includes ground agents who handle international flights, and fuel is shared at Faa’a. I found no announced impact on long-haul flights, but check yours.

Precedent: April 2026

Air Tahiti’s last strike, by pilots in April, ran for three days and badly disrupted traffic, affecting several thousand passengers a day. An end-of-conflict protocol was signed in the night of April 12–13, and flights resumed gradually on the Monday morning. It shows that a deal can end this quickly, but also that recovery takes a day or more.

What To Do Tonight

  1. Check every Air Tahiti flight you hold, from Thursday onward, plus connections to international flights.
  2. Use the fee waiver. If you can move to a flight before the strike’s effect, or later in the week, do it now while changes are free.
  3. Don’t skip the airport because the app says “scheduled”. Air Tahiti wants you at check-in, and cancellations can come late. Arrive at your normal time.
  4. Don’t leave a same-day connection to your long-haul flight home. Stay near Faa’a the night before.
  5. Tell your resort and transfer provider. Bora Bora’s airport is on a separate islet, so your boat transfer depends on your flight time.
  6. Have a Plan B:
    • Air Moana also serves Bora Bora and may take overflow on some routes. Seats will go quickly.
    • Ferries link Tahiti and Moorea. Services also run between Bora Bora and Tahiti and Moorea, though they’re slower.
  7. Check Air Tahiti’s channels at the start of Thursday, Tahiti time. In the UK that’s about 11:00 BST, on the US East Coast about 6:00am, and in Sydney about 9:00pm.

Your Rights and Insurance

  • Fees: Air Tahiti says change and refund fees are waived during the strike.
  • Care and costs: The airline says it won’t look after passengers if the fuel strike causes the cancellation. Keep receipts and challenge it afterwards if needed.
  • EU261/UK261 don’t apply. French Polynesia isn’t part of the EU, and inter-island flights don’t touch EU territory. US DOT rules cover flights to and from the US, not inter-island hops. Your protection is Air Tahiti’s conditions of carriage and French and local consumer law.
  • Packages: Ask your tour operator first. In the UK and Australia, package-travel rules generally make the organiser responsible for alternative arrangements.
  • Insurance: The strike notice has been public since October 16. Policies bought since then probably exclude it. If you were already insured, check strike, missed-connection and travel-delay wording.
