What Is Driving It

  • Saudi Arabia: Jeddah and Riyadh account for 61 of the 193 cancellations. some source attributes the Saudi-linked disruption to “regional security tensions and reported attacks on aviation infrastructure”, plus airspace restrictions.
  • India to Saudi suspensions: Indian airlines have suspended Saudi routes into late November (below). That fits Akasa’s 40 cancellations and the Indian airports’ cancellation counts.
  • The delays: the source gives no cause for the broader Asia-wide delays at Mumbai, Delhi, Jakarta and Manila. The sources we read do not mention “regional air traffic congestion”, so we do not claim it. Delays like these can come from weather, congestion and ordinary operations.

Saudi suspension timelines

Airline Routes Suspended until
Akasa Air Jeddah Nov 18
Riyadh Nov 30
Air India and Air India Express Jeddah, Riyadh, Dammam Nov 14 (Gulf News says Jeddah only until Oct 31, so check)
IndiGo Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, Madinah Nov 14

Who Should Pay Attention

  • Travellers connecting through India, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Manila or Jakarta on one ticket.
  • Indian-diaspora travellers in the US, UK, Canada and Australia flying to or from Mumbai, Delhi or Bengaluru.
  • Pilgrims and visitors travelling to Saudi Arabia (Riyadh, Jeddah, Madinah, Dammam).
  • Anyone booked on Akasa Air, IndiGo, SpiceJet, Gulf Air or Saudia.

If your flight does not touch these airports, the data probably does not affect you.

If Your Flight Is Affected: Checklist

✓ Check your flight status on the airline’s website or app before you leave for the airport ✓ Look for the cancellation notice and your rebooking or refund options ✓ Ask for a refund if the airline cancels. Do not accept a voucher unless you want one ✓ Book connections on one ticket where you can, so the airline must rebook you ✓ Allow extra time at Mumbai, Delhi, Jakarta and Manila, which had the most delays ✓ Keep boarding passes, notices and receipts for hotels and meals ✓ Check your government’s travel advice for Saudi Arabia and the region ✓ Check your travel insurance for airline cancellations and conflict-related exclusions

Your Rights (Brief)

Situation What generally applies
Flight cancelled by the airline You can generally choose a refund or a rebooking. Rules vary by country
Flight departing the UK or EU UK261 and EU261 may apply. Security or airspace problems are usually “extraordinary circumstances”, so cash compensation is unlikely, but refund, rerouting and care still apply
Flight to or from the US A refund if the airline cancels and you decline the alternative (DOT rule). No fixed cash compensation
Flight to or from Canada The Air Passenger Protection Regulations may apply, depending on the cause
Flights within India or Saudi Arabia The local regulator’s rules and the airline’s conditions apply. Check with the airline
Separate tickets The airline is not responsible for missed connections you booked separately
