The tournament starts today. If you have a ticket and you are still unclear about whether you need a visa, an ESTA, a FIFA PASS key, or all three — this article is for you.
FIFA PASS is the most searched World Cup travel term right now, and it is also one of the most misunderstood. Millions of fans — particularly from the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and most of Europe — do not need FIFA PASS at all. It was not built for them. FIFA PASS was built specifically for fans from countries that require a B1/B2 visitor visa to enter the United States, and it does one thing: it moves your visa interview appointment to the front of the queue.
Here is the complete picture — who needs what, how each system works, and exactly what to do right now if you have a ticket and have not yet sorted your entry documents.

FIFA PASS is not a visa. It is not a border pass. It is not a guarantee of entry. It is a priority appointment scheduling system — and that distinction is critical.
The system was announced at the White House on November 17, 2025, in a meeting that brought together President Donald Trump, FIFA President Gianni Infantino, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, and White House FIFA Task Force officials in the Oval Office. The full name is the FIFA Priority Appointment Scheduling System.
Trump announced it directly, standing alongside Infantino: “I’ve directed my administration to do everything within their power to make the 2026 World Cup an unprecedented success.” Rubio confirmed that over 400 additional consular officers had been deployed to US embassies and consulates around the world specifically to handle the surge in World Cup visa applications — and urged fans to apply immediately. “Your ticket is not a visa. It doesn’t guarantee admission to the US. Apply as soon as possible. Don’t wait until the last minute,” Rubio said.
Infantino, who has made multiple appearances at the Trump White House as the tournament has approached, framed the system simply: “With this FIFA Pass, we can make sure that those who buy a ticket — legitimate football fans — they can come and attend the World Cup in the best conditions, starting from getting their visa.”
What FIFA PASS actually does:
It gives confirmed FIFA ticket purchasers access to a priority pool of visa interview appointment slots at participating US embassies and consulates worldwide. In countries where standard B1/B2 appointment wait times stretch to months, FIFA PASS can compress that wait significantly.
What FIFA PASS does NOT do:
Before anything else, identify which category you are in. Everything else follows from this.
Route A — ESTA (42 Visa Waiver Program countries)
If your passport is from one of the 42 countries participating in the US Visa Waiver Program, you do not need FIFA PASS and you do not need a B1/B2 visa. You apply for an ESTA online, receive approval (usually within minutes, occasionally 72 hours), and use it to travel to the United States.
Countries in this category include: United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, all EU member states (France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Belgium, Portugal, etc.), Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Qatar.
Route B — B1/B2 Visitor Visa + FIFA PASS
If your passport is from a country that is NOT on the Visa Waiver Program list, you require a B1/B2 visitor visa to enter the United States. FIFA PASS was built for you. Register via your FIFA.com account, obtain your FIFA PASS key, and use it when scheduling your interview at your local US embassy or consulate to access the priority appointment pool.
Countries in this category include most of South Asia, the Middle East (excluding Qatar), Africa, and parts of Latin America and Southeast Asia.
Route C — Canadian Passport (US entry only)
Canadian and Bermudan passport holders do not require any additional authorisation to seek entry into the United States as tourists. No ESTA, no B1/B2 visa, no FIFA PASS. A valid Canadian passport is sufficient for US entry. Note: this applies to US entry only — if you are also attending matches in Canada as a non-Canadian national, you may still need an eTA for Canada (see Part 4).
ESTA is the fastest route into the United States for fans from the 42 Visa Waiver Program countries, and CBP figures confirm the scale of demand. From October 2025 through April 2026, CBP received over 5.9 million ESTA applications, with over 5 million approved. The United Kingdom led all nations with over 1.2 million approvals, followed by France (over 570,000), Germany (over 530,000), Japan (over 500,000), and South Korea (over 320,000).
What ESTA is:
The Electronic System for Travel Authorization is a pre-travel screening for visitors from VWP countries. It authorises you to travel to a US port of entry — it does not guarantee admission, which is decided by CBP at the border. An approved ESTA is valid for two years or until your passport expires (whichever comes first), and covers multiple trips of up to 90 days each.
ESTA cost: USD 40.27 (approximately £32 / AUD 63 at current rates)
How to apply — step by step:
Two critical cautions for ESTA applicants:
First, ESTA eligibility can be affected by travel history. If you have visited certain countries — currently Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, or Yemen on or after March 1, 2011 — you are not eligible for ESTA even if your passport is from a VWP country. In that case, you must apply for a B1/B2 visa instead. Check your eligibility before booking flights.
Second, a refused ESTA close to travel dates leaves almost no viable options. Treat your ESTA as a critical planning step, not an administrative afterthought. Apply well in advance.
If you are on Route B — you need a B1/B2 visa and you hold a FIFA ticket purchased directly from FIFA.com or authorised reseller On Location — here is the exact process.
Step 1 — Opt in via FIFA.com
Log into your FIFA.com account and submit the FIFA PASS opt-in form. You will receive a FIFA PASS key — a unique reference code linked to your ticket and personal details. This is the priority identifier you will use when scheduling your embassy appointment.
Step 2 — Complete the DS-160 form
The DS-160 is the standard online US non-immigrant visa application form. It must be completed at ceac.state.gov. Fill in every field accurately. Upload a current passport-style photograph meeting US visa photo requirements. Pay the visa application fee (currently USD 185 for B1/B2).
Step 3 — Schedule your priority interview
Go to your country’s US visa appointment scheduling site — for most countries this is ustraveldocs.com or the equivalent country-specific portal. During the scheduling process, identify yourself as a FIFA ticket holder and enter your FIFA PASS key. This flags your application for the priority appointment pool.
Accuracy is critical: Your passport details, biographic information, and DS-160 data must match your FIFA registration exactly. Any mismatch — even a minor difference in name spelling or date of birth — can lead to rescheduling, cancellation, or additional complications. Review every field before submitting.
Step 4 — Attend your interview
Bring: your valid passport (valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay), DS-160 confirmation page, visa fee payment receipt, passport photo, proof of your FIFA ticket, and any supporting documents (proof of accommodation, return travel, financial means, ties to your home country).
What to know about your chances:
FIFA PASS speeds up your appointment slot — it does not change the outcome. Consular officers apply the same eligibility criteria regardless of whether you came through the priority pool. Your application is assessed on its own merits.
Canada is co-hosting 13 matches across Toronto (BMO Field) and Vancouver (BC Place). The entry requirements for Canada are completely separate from US requirements. Being admitted to the United States does not guarantee admission to Canada.
UK, Australian, NZ, EU and most other visa-exempt nationals flying to Canada:
You require a Canadian Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). This is separate from your US ESTA — it is a Canada-specific document, costs only CAD 7 (approximately £4 / AUD 8), and is applied for at canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/visit-canada/eta. Processing is usually immediate.
Important eTA exception: If you are entering Canada from the United States by land or sea, you do NOT need an eTA — but you must still meet all Canadian immigration requirements and present a valid passport.
Nationals who need a Canadian Temporary Resident Visa (TRV):
If your country is not on Canada’s visa-exempt list, you need a TRV rather than an eTA. Canada has encouraged applicants to clearly indicate in their TRV application that travel is related to FIFA World Cup 2026 — this may assist with processing and tracking.
The key rule for cross-border travel:
There is no unified World Cup visa for the three host countries. If you are attending matches in the US, Canada, and Mexico on the same trip, you potentially need three separate entry documents. Check each country’s requirements independently.
Mexico is hosting 13 matches across three cities: Mexico City (Estadio Azteca — 5 matches including the opening game), Guadalajara (Estadio Akron), and Monterrey (Estadio BBVA).
Visa-free entry for most nationalities:
Mexico does not require a tourist visa for nationals of most countries including the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the US, the EU, Japan, and many others. Additionally, holders of a valid US visa, Canadian visa, UK visa, Japanese visa, or Schengen Area visa can enter Mexico without a separate Mexican visa — even if their own passport would normally require one.
FMM Tourist Card — mandatory for all visitors:
Every visitor entering Mexico, regardless of nationality, must complete a Mexico Tourist Card (Forma Migratoria Múltiple — FMM). This is a brief entry form. At major international airports including Mexico City (MEX/AICM), Felipe Ángeles (AIFA), Guadalajara (GDL) and Monterrey (MTY), the FMM can be completed digitally on arrival or in advance online at inm.gob.mx. Keep your FMM — you will need it when you depart Mexico.
FIFA FAN ID — separate from border documents:
For stadium entry in Mexico, all attendees must have a valid FIFA FAN ID alongside their match ticket. The FAN ID is a digital credential linked to your identity and ticket. No FAN ID = No stadium entry. International visitors to Mexico may also find the FAN ID serves as a simplified entry document in some circumstances — check FIFA’s latest guidance at FIFA.com for the current status.
Mexico safety advisory — know the levels:
The US State Department has issued tiered travel advisories for Mexico’s host states. Mexico City (Estado de México) and Monterrey (Nuevo León) are rated Level 2 — Exercise Increased Caution. Guadalajara’s state of Jalisco carries a Level 3 — Reconsider Travel rating, though the city’s official World Cup event areas are considered significantly safer. None of the six states currently rated Level 4 — Do Not Travel — are hosting matches. Stay within official fan zones and tournament venues, follow local authority guidance, and use registered transport.
Beyond FIFA PASS and ESTA, the US Customs and Border Protection agency has been actively promoting its Trusted Traveler Programs as the best way for pre-approved visitors to clear US border control faster during the tournament.
CBP figures show that from October 2025 through April 2026, over 1.6 million Trusted Traveler Program applications were received for Global Entry, NEXUS, and SENTRI combined. CBP Executive Director Matthew S. Davies confirmed: “CBP is proactively preparing for the FIFA World Cup 2026 to ensure a safe and efficient welcome for all visitors.”
Global Entry — the primary program for international travellers. Members use automated kiosks at over 60 US airports rather than standard immigration queues, significantly reducing wait times. Requires online application, background check, payment of the application fee (currently USD 120 for 5 years), and an in-person CBP interview. Applicants from the UK, Australia, Germany, Netherlands, South Korea, Switzerland, and several other countries can apply through trusted traveller equivalency agreements. Global Entry members also automatically qualify for TSA PreCheck at US security checkpoints. CBP now offers a Global Entry Mobile Application for completing arrival reporting via smartphone at supported airports.
NEXUS — designed for frequent travellers between Canada and the United States. Allows entry through dedicated lanes at land borders and dedicated kiosks at Canadian preclearance airports. Costs USD 50 for 5 years. Particularly relevant for fans moving between Toronto/Vancouver and US host cities during the tournament.
SENTRI — designed for frequent travellers between Mexico and the United States via land borders. Allows use of dedicated vehicle and pedestrian lanes at land border crossings. Particularly relevant for fans crossing between Mexican host cities and US host cities by road.
Mobile Passport Control — for fans who are not enrolled in any trusted traveller program but want faster processing at US airports: CBP’s free Mobile Passport Control app allows eligible international arrivals to submit passport and customs declaration information digitally before reaching a CBP officer, reducing queue time at supported airports. Available at major World Cup gateway airports.
Two US immigration headlines from 2026 have caused widespread confusion. Both are irrelevant to football fans attending the World Cup. The distinction is important.
The 75-country immigrant visa freeze (effective January 21, 2026): This applies ONLY to immigrant visas — the pathway used by people applying to move permanently to the United States. It has no effect on tourist travel. It does not affect ESTA. It does not affect B1/B2 visitor visas. It does not affect FIFA PASS. If you are travelling to watch football and returning home afterwards, this policy is irrelevant to your trip.
The US travel ban: Separately from the immigrant visa freeze, certain countries face additional scrutiny or restrictions for non-immigrant travel. The specific list is subject to change. Check the US State Department’s current Country Information page for your nationality at travel.state.gov/destination before finalising your travel plans, particularly if you hold a passport from a country that has been subject to any US travel restrictions.
If you are eligible for ESTA, apply via the official site and the system will flag any eligibility issue. If your ESTA is denied, that is the moment to explore the B1/B2 visa route.
Your match ticket is NOT an entry document. This was stated explicitly by Secretary Rubio and is confirmed by CBP. CBP border officers make the final admission decision at ports of entry. An approved ESTA or B1/B2 visa authorises you to travel to the border — it does not guarantee you will be admitted. Be prepared to show: your match ticket, proof of accommodation, return travel booking, proof of sufficient funds, and a clear explanation of your travel purpose if asked.
Passport validity. All three host countries require your passport to be valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay — unless your country is exempt from the six-month rule. Airlines may also deny boarding if your passport is close to expiry even when you technically meet the legal minimum. Renew your passport before you travel if there is any doubt.
Do not buy travel insurance after a disruption is announced. Most travel insurance policies exclude pre-existing events — strikes, travel advisories, announced disruptions — from coverage at the point of purchase. Buy insurance when you book.
The tournament runs until July 19. ESTA and eTA applications filed today are valid for two years — long enough to cover the full tournament and future travel. There is no downside to applying now.
