Act Right Now — The Deadline Clock Is Ticking

United, Delta, JetBlue and Southwest said they are capping ticket prices specifically for Spirit customers who need to rebook cancelled flights.

The Department of Transportation said on Saturday the majority of airlines will be capping ticket prices for Spirit Airlines travelers who need to rebook their cancelled flights. Some carriers have even reduced fares on high volume routes where Spirit used to operate.

These are not open-ended offers. Every carrier has set a specific deadline — and once those deadlines pass, normal walk-up pricing returns. A CBS News analysis found average fares jumped 23%, or roughly $60 per round trip, when Spirit previously exited a route. That 23% fare spike is what happens when rescue caps expire and the market reprices. Every Spirit passenger who has not yet booked an alternative needs to act today.

Transport Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed the government’s coordination role: “Regardless of how we got here, the Trump Administration is committed to taking care of you and your family when you fly.”

In the first 12 hours after Spirit’s shutdown, United alone rebooked approximately 14,000 Spirit passengers. JetBlue announced 11 new cities at Fort Lauderdale to backfill Spirit’s dominant FLL presence. The system is responding — but seats at rescue prices are a finite resource.

JetBlue — $99 One-Way: Expires Tuesday May 5 (72 Hours)

This is your most urgent action. JetBlue’s $99 rescue fares expire in approximately 48 hours from publication of this article. If you have an imminent Spirit booking or upcoming travel you need to rebook — call JetBlue today.

New York-based JetBlue is also offering $99 one-way rescue fares on travel through May 6 on similar Spirit/JetBlue routes.

JetBlue announced it would offer $99 rescue fares to Spirit customers. To qualify for these fares on JetBlue, passengers would need to show they were scheduled to fly on Spirit between now and May 6, and on the same (or similar) route. The airline urged travellers to call 1-800-JETBLUE to discuss options.

To assist stranded customers with imminent travel to and from cities we serve, we’re offering $99 one-way fares for travelers with proof of a valid Spirit itinerary for the same route for travel through May 6, 2026. If you’re stranded, call 1-800-JETBLUE to discuss your situation.

JetBlue’s second offer — Blue Basic capped at $299:

To help keep prices from increasing as availability changes, JetBlue has capped Blue Basic fares at $299 or less on JetBlue-operated nonstop routes to and from Fort Lauderdale, FL (FLL) and San Juan, PR (SJU) that were also operated by Spirit as of April. These fare caps apply to new bookings made through May 8, 2026.

JetBlue CEO Joanna Geraghty said: “This is really tough news for the thousands of Spirit team members affected, as well as the customers who were planning trips on Spirit. We want to help fill the void created by this loss.”

JetBlue also announced: 11 new cities added to Fort Lauderdale connections — directly backfilling Spirit’s dominant FLL hub position. If you were booked on Spirit through Fort Lauderdale, JetBlue’s expanded FLL network is your most natural alternative.

How to Book JetBlue’s $99 Rescue Fares

Step 1: Gather your Spirit confirmation number and proof of payment (email receipt or card statement)
Step 2: Call 1-800-JETBLUE (1-800-538-2583) — online booking is NOT available for the $99 rescue fare — phone only
Step 3: Tell the agent: “I am a Spirit Airlines passenger whose flights were cancelled on May 2, 2026. I would like to access JetBlue’s $99 rescue fare.”
Step 4: Provide your Spirit confirmation number and the route you need to travel
Step 5: Complete booking before May 5 for travel through May 6

JetBlue Spirit employee benefits: JetBlue said it would extend its jumpseat agreement for Spirit employees, and offer interviews to workers for open roles.

United Airlines — $199 One-Way: Through May 16 (Best for Summer Travellers)

United’s rescue fare is the best option for Spirit passengers with bookings beyond May 6 — it covers travel through May 16 with a two-week booking window.

United launched a website with special fares for stranded passengers. Most fares were capped at $199 one-way and cover most cities Spirit flew from — most notably Atlanta, Chicago, Fort Lauderdale, Houston, Las Vegas, Miami, Newark, New Orleans and Orlando. Rescue fares on longer flights were capped at no more than $299.

To unlock these fares and see additional details, go to united.com/specialfares and give us your Spirit confirmation number, proof of purchase for travel between May 2–May 16, and your United MileagePlus number. If you’re not a MileagePlus member, you can sign up instantly for free.

United’s offer is notable for its breadth — it covers essentially Spirit’s entire domestic route map at capped prices. Atlanta, Chicago O’Hare, Fort Lauderdale, Houston Intercontinental, Las Vegas, Miami, Newark, New Orleans, and Orlando are explicitly confirmed. The $199 cap applies to one-way fares on most routes. Longer connections are capped at $299.

United Spirit Employee Offer: If you’re a Spirit employee, we’re extending pass travel benefits on United to you for the next two weeks to help you get home safely. You’re also welcome to apply for open roles at United at united.com/SpiritEmployees — which will spotlight your application for our recruiters to prioritise.

How to Book United’s $199 Rescue Fares

Step 1: Go to united.com/specialfares — available 24/7, online booking
Step 2: Sign in to MileagePlus (or sign up free — takes 2 minutes)
Step 3: Enter your Spirit confirmation number and proof of purchase showing travel between May 2–16
Step 4: Search your route — $199 (or $299 for longer flights) fares will appear
Step 5: Complete booking — MileagePlus miles will earn at standard rate on rescue fare tickets

United’s first 12 hours: United rebooked approximately 14,000 Spirit passengers in the first 12 hours of the shutdown. Seat availability is moving fast — book now.

Southwest Airlines — Flat Fares: Expires Wednesday May 6 (Airport Counter Only)

Southwest’s rescue fare offer is unique — it is only available at airport ticket counters, not online. You must physically go to a Southwest ticket counter to access these fares.

Southwest Airlines will offer a one-way flat ticket at either $200, $300, or $400, depending on the flight distance, for travel through May 6, and can be booked at the airport ticket counter.

Southwest looks forward to extending its hospitality to Spirit customers and offers its heartfelt sympathies to Spirit’s employees.

Southwest’s flat fare structure by distance:

  • Short-haul routes: $200 one-way
  • Medium-haul routes: $300 one-way
  • Long-haul routes: $400 one-way

Southwest Elite Status Match: The airline is also offering a status match between Spirit Silver or Gold Elite to A-List. If you held Spirit Free Spirit Silver or Gold elite status: bring your Spirit membership card or account screenshot to any Southwest counter and request the A-List status match. A-List provides priority boarding, same-day standby, and bonus points earning on Southwest.

Southwest Spirit Employee Welcome: Southwest extended its hospitality to Spirit employees with travel pass benefits — part of the industry-wide support programme coordinated by Transportation Secretary Duffy.

How to Book Southwest’s Flat Rescue Fares

Step 1: Go to your nearest airport with a Southwest ticket counter — this cannot be done online or by phone for the rescue fare
Step 2: Bring your Spirit confirmation number and proof of payment (email or card statement)
Step 3: Tell the Southwest agent: “I am a Spirit Airlines passenger needing to rebook on Southwest’s rescue fare programme”
Step 4: The agent will book you at the flat fare rate ($200/$300/$400) for travel through May 6 Deadline: Wednesday May 6 at 11:59 PM CDT — 3 days from today

Southwest airports with ticket counters: All Southwest-served airports — Dallas Love Field (DAL), Chicago Midway (MDW), Denver (DEN), Las Vegas (LAS), Baltimore (BWI), Orlando (MCO), Fort Lauderdale (FLL), and 80+ additional airports.

American Airlines — Fare Caps + Bigger Aircraft: No Fixed Deadline

American Airlines’ rescue programme is the broadest in scope — it combines fare caps with an operational expansion to accommodate Spirit’s displaced passengers.

American Airlines said it has launched a page on its website that displays rescue fares to and from a range of domestic and international destinations for Spirit customers needing to rebook travel. The airline said it’s also reviewing adding additional capacity, including flying bigger planes and adding more flights on routes Spirit used to fly, to accommodate as many passengers as possible.

American’s operational response — upsizing aircraft on Spirit-overlap routes — is the most structurally significant intervention of any carrier. Instead of just capping prices, American is adding actual seat capacity to the market. Larger aircraft on Spirit-overlap routes mean more seats at capped prices are available, reducing the risk of rescue fares selling out before all displaced passengers are rebooked.

American is also hosting recruitment events for Spirit employees — one of the most proactive talent acquisition responses in the aviation industry’s reaction to the shutdown.

How to Book American’s Rescue Fares

Step 1: Go to aa.com/spirithelp — dedicated Spirit rescue page
Step 2: Search your Spirit route — capped rescue fares will appear for overlapping nonstop routes
Step 3: Provide Spirit confirmation number when prompted
Step 4: Complete booking — AAdvantage miles earn at standard rate

Delta Air Lines — Fare Caps (~5 Days): Act in the Next 48 Hours

Delta Air Lines will introduce ticket price capping on high-volume routes that overlap with Spirit, and these reduced ticket prices will remain in place for around five days to support displaced passengers.

Delta’s cap is the shortest-duration offer of any major carrier — approximately five days from Spirit’s May 2 shutdown puts Delta’s window at approximately May 7. Delta’s caps are concentrated on high-volume Spirit-overlap routes — Atlanta, Detroit, New York, Los Angeles, and Spirit’s top leisure markets.

Delta’s crew scheduling challenges noted in early Day 2 reports are being resolved — Delta is prioritising capacity additions on Spirit-overlap routes as its operational situation normalises from the April 29 disruption chaos.

How to Book Delta’s Rescue Fares

Step 1: Go to delta.com — search your Spirit route
Step 2: Capped fares will appear on overlapping routes — no specific Spirit code required
Step 3: Book immediately — Delta’s 5-day window is the shortest of any major carrier

Frontier Airlines — 50% Off: Expires May 10 (Best for Summer Bookings)

Frontier’s rescue offer is the most flexible in terms of travel dates — it covers flights all the way through November 19, 2026, making it the best option for Spirit passengers with summer bookings.

Frontier Airlines is reducing its base fares by 50% on travel booked before May 10. You have to fly on Tuesday, Wednesday or Saturday to qualify for the biggest discounts, though Frontier will offer 10% off on other days. And you have to book at least three weeks in advance. However, these fares are available across Frontier’s entire network.

Frontier currently serves more than 100 routes previously flown by Spirit and will expand further this summer with nine additional routes, plus 15 additional daily flights across 18 former Spirit markets.

Frontier is also offering its 2026 GoWild Summer Pass for just $199, providing access to unlimited flights across the airline’s network through the summer.

The GoWild Summer Pass at $199 is potentially the best value offer for any Spirit passenger with multiple summer bookings — unlimited Frontier flights through summer 2026 for a flat fee of $199.

How to Book Frontier’s 50% Off Rescue Fares

Step 1: Go to flyfrontier.com
Step 2: Search your route — apply promo code SAVENOW at checkout
Step 3: Select Tuesday, Wednesday, or Saturday travel for 50% off (other days: 10% off)
Step 4: Book at least 3 weeks in advance of your travel date
Step 5: Booking deadline: May 10, 2026 — travel through November 19

GoWild Summer Pass: flyfrontier.com/gowild — $199, unlimited summer flights — book by May 10

Allegiant Air — 50% Back in Points + Frozen Fares: Expires May 12

Allegiant Air has also committed to freezing fare prices across routes that overlap with Spirit. Allegiant announced customers could receive the equivalent of 50% back in Allways Rewards points for customers that book one of 20-plus eligible routes where the two carriers went roughly head-to-head. The promotion applies to customers who book by May 12 for travel between now and July 20.

Promo code: ALLWAYSTHERE — enter at checkout on allegiantair.com

Allegiant’s offer is unique because it returns value in points rather than direct discounts. The 50% back in Allways Rewards points offsets the cost of future bookings — effectively making your first post-Spirit Allegiant flight 50% cheaper in practical terms.

How to Book Allegiant’s Rescue Offer

Step 1: Go to allegiantair.com
Step 2: Search eligible Spirit-overlap routes (full list on Allegiant’s website)
Step 3: Enter promo code ALLWAYSTHERE at checkout
Step 4: Book by May 12 for travel through July 20
Step 5: Allways Rewards account required to receive points back

Avelo Airlines — Up to 75% Off: Limited Routes

Avelo Airlines is offering up to 75% off base fares on select routes.

Avelo operates from smaller secondary airports — generally near but not at major hub airports. Avelo’s 75% off is the deepest single discount of any carrier in the rescue programme — but it applies to a limited selection of routes. Check aveloair.com for the full eligible route list.

Spirit Employee Travel Benefits — The Government Coordination

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy held a press conference at Newark announcing the coordinated industry response. Key confirmed elements for Spirit employees:

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy says other carriers are stepping in. Duffy explained: “Regardless of how we got here, the Trump Administration is committed to taking care of you and your family when you fly.”

Jumpseat agreements extended: JetBlue, United, and others extended jumpseat access to Spirit pilots and cabin crew — allowing them to ride in cockpit jump seats to get home or to job interviews at no cost.

Travel pass benefits: Multiple carriers extended employee travel pass benefits to Spirit workers for two weeks — allowing free or heavily discounted standby travel while they transition.

Job recruitment: United (united.com/SpiritEmployees), JetBlue, American, and Frontier are all hosting Spirit employee recruitment channels — spotlighting Spirit applications for immediate review.

The Fare Spike Warning — Why You Must Act Today

A CBS News analysis found average fares jumped 23%, or roughly $60 per round trip, when Spirit previously exited a route. And that doesn’t count the fares that are already rising because of the spike in fuel prices.

The rescue fare caps are temporary. When they expire:

  • JetBlue drops from $99 → market pricing → potentially $200–$350 one-way on FLL routes
  • United drops from $199 → full walk-up pricing → potentially $300–$500 one-way
  • Southwest drops from flat $200/$300/$400 → dynamic pricing
  • Frontier drops from 50% off → full base fare

Every day of delay costs money. Every seat booked at rescue fare prices is a seat no longer available at those prices when the next Spirit passenger tries to book. The rescue fare window is narrow, the displaced passenger pool is enormous (60,000 per day through May), and the caps are finite.

✅ Your 5-Step Rescue Booking Checklist

Step 1 — Gather your Spirit documentation NOW. Every rescue programme requires: Spirit confirmation number + proof of payment (email receipt or card statement screenshot). Have both on your phone before making any call or website booking.

Step 2 — Prioritise JetBlue if flying imminently. $99 one-way, phone only, expires May 5. Call 1-800-JETBLUE now if your travel is in the next 3 days.

Step 3 — Book United online if flying before May 16. united.com/specialfares — sign up for free MileagePlus first, then enter Spirit confirmation number. The fastest online rescue booking experience of any carrier.

Step 5 — Book Frontier before May 10 for anything summer. If your Spirit booking was for a summer holiday, Frontier’s SAVENOW code (50% off through November 19) is the single best rescue offer for non-urgent future travel.
