Paris Curfew October 22, 2026: Metro Stations Closed Around République and Les Halles — What Tourists Need to Know

TRENDING: A CURFEW IS IN FORCE IN CENTRAL PARIS FOR THE THIRD NIGHT RUNNING, WITH METRO AND RER STATIONS CLOSED AND STUDENT PROTESTS CONTINUING DURING THE HALF-TERM BREAK. HERE IS WHAT IS AFFECTED, WHAT IS NOT, AND HOW TO PROTECT YOUR TRIP.

Published: October 22, 2026 |

Paris is still open for visitors, but the centre of the city is not operating normally this week. A night curfew of 11pm to 6am is in force in the zones around Place de la République and Les Halles, several metro and RER stations are being closed at police request, and students are marching again during the Toussaint school break. With UK half-term starting this weekend, thousands of British, Irish and North American visitors are heading into the city.

What Is Happening in Paris Today (October 22)

Item Detail
Curfew 11pm–6am, centred on Place de la République and the Les Halles district
Metro closures (from 10pm Oct 21) République, Châtelet, Les Halles and Châtelet–Les Halles, closed at the request of the Prefecture of Police
RER RER B partly disrupted overnight
Daytime closures today (from 10am) Several stations closed because of a student protest, including Bastille, Place d’Italie and Saint-Paul. Travel Monitor also lists Saint-Marcel, Quai de la Rapée, Gare d’Austerlitz (line 5), Bréguet-Sabin and Chemin-Vert
Line 10 Not running between Gare d’Austerlitz and Jussieu (per Travel Monitor)
Protest High school and university students marching again; the demonstration is described as banned
Lyon City-centre curfew 9pm–6am (per Travel Monitor)

Residents and certain workers may move within the curfew zones under conditions set out in the Prefecture of Police decree. We could not confirm what exemptions, if any, apply to visitors or hotel guests. Do not assume you are exempt. Ask your hotel or the prefecture before you go out after 11pm in the zone.

How We Got Here

Demonstrations over the cost of living and school conditions began spreading across France last week. Reports from October 17 described scuffles and fires in several cities. By October 19:

  • France’s interior minister said at least 2,000 people had been arrested and more than 600 police officers and firefighters injured (Skift). The Canadian government advisory, as summarised by MTL Blog, cites at least 2,400 arrests. The figures differ by source and date.
  • The Louvre closed on Monday after protesters blocked its entrance.
  • Marseille banned public gatherings, and Lille and Denain imposed curfews.
  • A fire broke out at Lyon’s tourist office.
  • President Macron said authorities could ban future demonstrations, and Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said the government was ready to declare a state of emergency “if needed.”

Which Parts of Paris Are Affected — and Which Are Not

Afar’s reporting, which draws on a Paris tour guide, says disruption is concentrated on the Right Bank. This is journalism, not an official advisory.

Take extra care around:

  • Place de la République
  • Bastille
  • Les Halles and Châtelet
  • Champs-Élysées area (metro stations were shut near it earlier this week)

Reported as largely unaffected:

  • Île de la Cité and Île Saint-Louis
  • Left Bank: 5th, 6th, 7th, 13th, 14th, 15th arrondissements
  • Notre-Dame, the Eiffel Tower and Sacré-Cœur
  • Montmartre (18th) and the 12th, 19th, 20th and 17th arrondissements

Situations change hourly. Check before you leave your hotel.

Transport: Metro, Buses, Trains, Taxis

Mode What we know
Metro / RER Stations close at short notice at police request. Check the RATP app or traffic page on the day
Buses Right Bank routes heavily affected, with frequent deviations (Afar)
Eurostar, SNCF, Trenitalia Not affected as of the October 17 protests (Afar). Check your operator today
Taxis / rideshares Cannot cross protest routes. Walk a few blocks away from the route to find one, and allow extra time with luggage
Airports The curfew zone is in the city centre. We have not seen reports of airport closures, but access by road or RER B may be slower. Leave extra time for CDG and Orly transfers

Dates to Watch

Date What is planned Notes
October 24 Further French protests Organisers have announced action (Skift). Yellow-vest groups have also threatened action on Oct 24 and 31, though details are limited (Afar)
November 5 Large strike in France, including SNCF Reported as separate from the current protests, but strikes can turn into demonstrations
November 11 Iberian-wide strike (Spain, Portugal) Reported by Afar
November 20 Italian general strike Reported by Afar

Should You Cancel Your Paris Trip?

That is a personal decision, and the answer depends on where you are staying and what you plan to do. Afar’s guide says Paris is largely functioning and advises against cancelling, suggesting Saint-Germain, the Latin Quarter or Montmartre on protest days.

Reasons to adjust rather than cancel

  • Most landmarks are open.
  • Disruption is concentrated in specific districts and at night.

Reasons to rethink

  • You are staying in a hotel inside the Republique or Les Halles curfew zone.
  • You need to arrive or leave late at night through Gare du Nord or Châtelet.
  • You are travelling with young children or reduced mobility.

Your Rights and Insurance

  • Package holidays (UK/EU): If you booked a package through a travel company, you may have rights to changes or refunds if the destination becomes unsafe. Ask the organiser. The UK Package Travel Regulations 2018 apply to UK packages.
  • Flights: If your flight is cancelled, you are entitled to a refund or rerouting. Fixed EU261/UK261 compensation generally does not apply where the cause is outside the airline’s control, but refund, rerouting and care rights remain.
  • Eurostar and rail: Check the operator’s change and refund policy.
  • Hotels and Airbnb: Policies vary. A curfew or protest alone does not usually trigger a free cancellation unless the property or platform says so.
  • Travel insurance: Coverage for protests depends on the policy. As Afar notes, events already known when you bought the policy are generally not covered. Read your policy wording or call your insurer before you decide.

Practical Checklist for Paris Travellers

✓ Check the RATP app before every metro journey ✓ Be back in your hotel before 11pm if you are in or near République, Les Halles or Châtelet ✓ Avoid protest routes and large gatherings, even peaceful ones ✓ Keep your passport or a copy, and your hotel address, on you ✓ Screenshot your hotel booking and insurance policy ✓ Enrol in your embassy’s traveller alerts (UK FCDO, US STEP, Canada’s Registration of Canadians Abroad, Australia’s Smartraveller) ✓ Plan airport transfers early and allow extra time ✓ Avoid wearing a face covering in public, as France has a face-covering ban (flagged in Canada’s advisory) ✓ Check your airline, Eurostar or SNCF booking the morning you travel
