The Government of Canada has refreshed its travel advice for seven destinations that many Canadians visit in the fall and winter. The advice levels did not all change. Several updates are short-term warnings tied to storms, protests, disease or an election. Dates differ by country, so each one is listed below.
Always check the official page at travel.gc.ca for your destination before you book and again before you fly. Advisories can change without notice.
| Destination | Canada’s advice level | What is new | Date of update |
|---|---|---|---|
| Japan | Take normal security precautions (regional advisory for the Ryukyu Islands) | Avoid non-essential travel to Okinawa and the Ryukyu Islands because of Typhoon Champi | Oct 20 |
| Mexico | Exercise a high degree of caution | Hurricane warnings for the west-central coast issued, then lifted | Oct 13 and 16; lifted Oct 19 |
| France | Exercise a high degree of caution | Violent demonstrations, at least 2,400 arrests, face-covering ban flagged | Oct 19 |
| Cuba | Avoid non-essential travel | Shortages, worsening security, cards not accepted, medical-bill warning | Late September update; remains in force |
| United States | Take normal security precautions | Dengue outbreaks in Florida, mostly Hillsborough County (Tampa) | Oct 15 |
| Costa Rica | Exercise a high degree of caution | Level 2 chikungunya travel health notice | Oct 13 |
| Brazil | Exercise a high degree of caution (regional advisories) | Election runoff on October 25, methanol-contaminated alcohol deaths | Not specified by source |
Canada’s overall advice for Japan remains at the lowest level, “take normal security precautions.” On October 20, however, Canada advised against non-essential travel to the Ryukyu Islands, including Okinawa Prefecture, ahead of Typhoon Champi, which was expected to cross the islands on October 22.
Airline context: China Airlines and Tigerair Taiwan cancelled Okinawa flights, and ANA is offering free changes and refunds on some Okinawa-region routes until October 24, according to Travel Monitor.
Canada’s advice for Mexico is “exercise a high degree of caution,” with regional advisories.
Related: Hurricane Simon and Puerto Vallarta airport closure.
Canada advises “exercise a high degree of caution.” The October 19 update warns of demonstrations involving vandalism, looting, arson and clashes with police.
Related: Paris curfew October 22: metro closures and tourist advice.
Canada’s advice for Cuba is the strictest of the seven: avoid non-essential travel.
Canada’s advice is the lowest level, “take normal security precautions.” On October 15, Canada flagged dengue outbreaks in Florida, mostly in Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa. Mosquitoes can bite day and night, so use repellent.
Canada also repeats border reminders:
Canada advises “exercise a high degree of caution.” On October 13, the Public Health Agency of Canada issued a Level 2 chikungunya travel health notice. It also covers Cuba, Nicaragua, French Guiana and Suriname. The virus causes fever and joint pain that can last months or years.
Crime is the main reason for the caution level:
Canada advises “exercise a high degree of caution,” with regional advisories. The second round of the general election is on October 25. Canada warns of possible political gatherings, demonstrations and heightened security before, during and after the vote.
