Alaska Airlines announced on October 27 that it will operate a seasonal, daily nonstop between Ted Stevens Anchorage International (ANC) and Tokyo Narita (NRT). The flights are subject to government approval.

The Tokyo Route

Approval Subject to government approval

Schedule (local times)

Direction Departs Arrives
Anchorage to Tokyo Narita 2:10pm 3:25pm the next day
Tokyo Narita to Anchorage 9:45pm 12:00pm (same day, local)

One Mile at a Time lists flight numbers AS21 (ANC–NRT) and AS22 (NRT–ANC), with block times of about 8 hours 15 minutes westbound and 7 hours 15 minutes eastbound, over 3,434 miles. Alaska’s release does not list flight numbers, so confirm them when booking. It would be Alaska’s second-longest 737 MAX route, after Seattle–Keflavik.

Cabins and Service

Item Detail
Seats One Mile at a Time reports 161 seats: 16 first class and 145 economy (Alaska’s release does not state the layout, so confirm)
First Class Priority boarding, recliner seats, multi-course dining, Filson blankets and pillows, an amenity kit, and Alaska Lounge access in Anchorage
Main Cabin and Premium A complimentary meal with a hot entrée and dessert. Premium adds complimentary beverages
Wi-Fi Free on select flights for Atmos Rewards members through T-Mobile while Starlink installation continues across the MAX 8 fleet

A narrow-body aircraft on an 8-hour flight is a trade-off. One reviewer calls the 737 MAX “hardly comfortable” but well suited to the route.

Fares and Booking

  • Introductory fares: round trip from $999 for travel May 13 to June 7, 2027, subject to availability. Round-trip purchase is required. The offer runs through Oct 31, 2026.
  • Where: alaskaair.com and hawaiianairlines.com.
  • Fares and availability change. Compare with other Tokyo options from your home city.

Three New Seasonal Routes From Anchorage

All run once weekly on Saturdays, June 12 to Aug 7, 2027:

Route Anchorage departs Arrives Return departs Arrives in Anchorage
Austin (AUS) 8:00pm 6:05am next day 5:40pm 10:00pm
Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) 9:15pm 7:00am next day 5:55pm 10:05pm
Nashville (BNA) 7:45pm 5:45am next day 3:30pm 8:00pm

Alaska says together these make its largest nonstop schedule from Alaska in its history.

Why It Matters

  • Alaska and Japan: Alaska has not flown nonstop between Anchorage and Japan before. One Mile at a Time notes Alaska served several eastern Russian destinations from Anchorage between 1991 and 1998.
  • Alaska tourism: Governor Mike Dunleavy said the flights bring Northern Lights and Denali trips “closer than ever.”
  • For US travellers: a Tokyo option from Alaska’s Anchorage hub. Reaching Anchorage from the Lower 48 still needs a connection.
  • For visitors to Alaska: a new route for Japanese visitors, and a summer route for Texas and Tennessee travellers via Saturday flights.

Before You Book: Checklist

✓ Remember the flights are subject to government approval ✓ Confirm the schedule and flight numbers on alaskaair.com ✓ Book by Oct 31 to get the $999 round-trip introductory fare, if the dates suit you ✓ Check Japan entry requirements for your passport before you book ✓ Book on one ticket if you are connecting to or from Anchorage ✓ Check award and Atmos Rewards pricing, which was not published in the sources we read ✓ Consider a travel insurance policy that covers schedule changes
