On Tuesday October 27, strong winds, rough seas and coastal flooding kept three ships out of PortMiami until the afternoon. Norwegian Joy, Norwegian Getaway and Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth circled offshore for roughly six to seven hours. A fourth ship, TUI Cruises’ Mein Schiff 1, skipped Miami altogether. Some passengers missed flights home. Cruise Fever counts at least eight ships hit by the same weather across Florida and New Jersey, not including Queen Elizabeth or Mein Schiff 1. This guide covers what happened, which ships were affected, and what passengers may be able to claim.
The three ships were due in around 7am. The port’s dock report shows they actually arrived in the afternoon:
| Ship | Voyage ending | Arrived | What else we know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Norwegian Joy | 4-night Bahamas | 12:50pm | Next sailing’s check-in pushed to the afternoon. Departure delayed to 9:20pm. |
| Queen Elizabeth | 12-night Eastern Caribbean | 1:15pm | Embarking guests told to arrive 7 hours later than their boarding-pass time. Sailed nearly at midnight. |
| Norwegian Getaway | 4-night Bahamas | 1:35pm | Marked the end of its Miami-based programme. Guests told to contact their airlines. |
Mein Schiff 1 was due in Miami from 7am. It did not wait offshore. It continued toward San Juan and spent Tuesday at sea. The ship had been in Port Canaveral on Monday. No cruise ships were scheduled at PortMiami on Wednesday.
Cruise Fever’s list of ships affected by the same weather this week:
| Ship (port) | What happened |
|---|---|
| Norwegian Joy, Norwegian Getaway (PortMiami) | Late arrivals, as above |
| Margaritaville at Sea Paradise (Palm Beach) | Return pushed from Tuesday to Wednesday. Freeport cancelled, Nassau added. A 4-night cruise became 5 nights. $50 future cruise credit or free rebooking offered for the next sailing. |
| Utopia of the Seas (Port Canaveral) | Nassau and CocoCay cancelled on the October 26 sailing. Rerouted to Cozumel. Shore excursions refunded as onboard credit. |
| Harmony of the Seas (Port Canaveral) | Swapped the order of Nassau and CocoCay. Dates unchanged. |
| Star of the Seas (Port Canaveral) | Skipped CocoCay on Monday. Excursions refunded as onboard credit. |
| Independence of the Seas (Cape Liberty, NJ) | Southern calls cancelled. Sent north to Saint John, New Brunswick. |
| Oasis of the Seas (Cape Liberty, NJ) | Covered in our earlier report. |
Queen Elizabeth and Mein Schiff 1 come from other outlets, which takes the total to at least ten.
Cruise Critic reports that some guests missed flights home. The reports we checked give no number.
| Source | What may be available | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Norwegian Cruise Line | Reimbursement of up to $300 per person for eligible airline change or cancellation fees not covered by your travel insurance or the airline. | Receipts required. Reported in the notice to Getaway guests. Ask whether it applies to Joy. |
| Cunard / TUI Cruises | No compensation announcement found in the reports we checked. | Ask guest services and check your booking terms. |
| Your airline | A missed flight caused by a late ship is usually not the airline’s fault. Ask for a same-day change. | Contact the airline before departure. Change fees or fare differences may apply. |
| Travel insurance | Trip-delay, missed-connection and extra-transport benefits. | Read the definitions and claim deadlines. Keep the cruise line’s written delay notice. |
| Credit card benefits | Some cards reimburse trip-delay costs when the trip was paid on the card. | Check your card’s terms. |
| UK package holidays | If you bought the cruise and flights together from one seller, start with that seller. | Package holidays carry extra duties on the organiser. Check your own country’s rules. |
Keep as evidence:
Ask for any reimbursement deadline in writing. Several cruise-line policies require receipts within a set period.
