Italy faces a national general strike called by the USB union. Our main guide covers flights and trains across the country: Italy Oct 30 strike: what is confirmed. This guide focuses on getting to and from Fiumicino (FCO).

What Is Striking and When

Service Strike window Detail
National rail (Trenitalia, Italo, Trenord) 9pm Thu Oct 29 to 8:59pm Fri Oct 30 RFI lists 21:00 to 20:59. Services may be disrupted before and after
Rome ATAC (buses, trams, metro) 24 hours, Fri Oct 30 Normal service only from the start of the day to 8:29am and 5:00pm to 7:59pm. Not guaranteed 8:30am to 5pm, or from 8pm to the end of service
Cotral (regional buses) 24 hours Guaranteed periods are similar. Metromare and Roma Nord links may be disrupted
Taxis and flights All day Oct 30 The US Embassy warns of possible disruptions to air travel and taxis all day Oct 30
Highways From 10pm Oct 29 Essential services protected

Also affecting Fiumicino rail: engineering works at Roma Ostiense (Oct 28–30) change some regional services, including Rome–Fiumicino Airport, with cancellations, diversions and journeys up to five minutes longer (TravelWires).

Your Options From Fiumicino

Option What we know Risk during the strike
Leonardo Express (to Roma Termini, normally about 32 minutes) Hit by the rail strike. Not every train will be cancelled Check Trenitalia’s guaranteed-train list for your exact departure. Some travellers on a forum say it is “always guaranteed”, but that is opinion, and no post cites an official list
FL1 regional train (Roma Tiburtina and other stations) Hit by the strike. Regional guaranteed bands are generally 6am to 9am and 6pm to 9pm on weekdays Only listed trains are guaranteed. Not a reliable choice outside those windows
Replacement buses Trenitalia may use substitute buses, per a forum poster, departing from outside Termini Unconfirmed. Check Trenitalia before you rely on it
Taxi The US Embassy warns of possible taxi disruption all day Oct 30. A fixed fare of about €55 to the centre within the Aurelian Walls is widely reported Verify the fare on the official airport (ADR) site. Expect queues and fewer cars
Pre-booked private transfer A fixed time and price The most reliable option. Book now and confirm in writing
Airport coach Private coach operators run airport services Check that your operator is running

Best choice if you can’t risk it: a pre-booked private transfer, or arrange hotel pick-up. If you must use public transport, travel in the guaranteed windows.

Getting Around Rome on Friday Oct 30 (ATAC)

Time Buses, trams, metro
Start of service to 8:29am Normal
8:30am to 5:00pm Not guaranteed
5:00pm to 7:59pm Normal
8:00pm to end of service Not guaranteed
  • Night buses: the “N” night lines may stop on the night of Thursday to Friday. Guaranteed night runs include lines 38, 44, 61, 86, 170, 246, 301, 314, 404, 444, 451, 664, 881, 916 and 980 (Greenme.it).
  • Metro stations: escalators, lifts and stairlifts won’t work in stations that stay open, and ticket offices will be closed. Tickets can be bought online, and cards work on surface vehicles.
  • Friday night: after midnight, metro lines A, B/B1 and C are not guaranteed.

Past turnout for USB-only strikes was 42.9% of surface staff (18 May) and 44.6% (28 Nov 2025, joint strike), per Greenme.it, but turnout varies and the effect is hard to predict.

The USB Demonstration Near Termini

  • When and where: 10:30am, Friday Oct 30, Piazza dei Cinquecento, in front of Roma Termini station (US Embassy Rome).
  • Student-led protests are also expected in cities across Italy.
  • Termini is the end of the Leonardo Express. If you arrive on a train, allow extra time and expect crowds and possible closures nearby.
  • The US Embassy advises you to avoid demonstrations and large crowds, stay alert, and keep a low profile. “Peaceful protests can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.”
  • US citizens can enroll in STEP (step.state.gov) for updates. In an emergency, dial 112 (English-speaking operators are available).

If You Are Flying Out

  • Allow extra hours. If your flight is on Friday, arrive in Rome the day before if you can.
  • Our flights guide explains the protected flight windows (07:00–10:00 and 18:00–21:00) and your rights. USB’s notice covers air transport on Oct 30, but the date is disputed, so check your airline.
  • Do not cancel your own flight. Wait for the airline’s notice.
  • Missing a flight because your transfer was late is generally not covered by airline compensation rules. Check your travel insurance for strike cover.

Heading to Milan? Malpensa Express is cancelled during the rail strike and replaced by direct buses with no intermediate stops (QuiFinanza).
